The Rafah Border Crossing (Arabic:معبر رفحMa`bar Rafaḥ, Hebrew:מעבר רפיח) or Rafah Crossing Point is the sole crossing point between Egypt and Gaza and between Egypt and the State of Palestine. It is located on the Gaza–Egypt border, which was recognized by the 1979 Israel–Egypt Peace Treaty. The original crossing point was named Rafah land port. Only passage of persons takes place through the Rafah Border Crossing. All traffic of goods is diverted to the Kerem Shalom border crossing.
The gates
The Rafah land port became the primary border crossing between Egypt and Gaza, managed by the Israel Airports Authority until Israel had dismantled its settlements in Gaza on 11 September 2005 as part of a disengagement plan. It subsequently became the task of the European Union Border Assistance Mission Rafah (EUBAM) to monitor the crossing. The Rafah land port, known as the "Salah al Din Gate" is located at the original Rafah crossing on the Salah al-Din Road, the main highway of Gaza from Erez to Rafah. Rafah land port was bombed by Israel in October 2009 allegedly to destroy tunnels.
When Israel withdrew from the Sinai in 1982, Rafah was split into a Gazan part and an Egyptian part, dividing families, separated by barbed-wire barriers. The core of the city was destroyed by Israel and Egypt to create a large buffer zone.
Over the ages it has been known as "Robihwa" by the ancient Egyptians, "Rafihu" by the Assyrians, "Ῥαφία, Rhaphia" by the Greeks, "Raphia" by Romans, רפיח "Rafiaḥ" by the Israelites, "Rafh" by the Arab Caliphate. The transliteration of the Hebrew name, "Rafiah", is used in modern English alongside "Rafah"

Some foreigners and wounded Palestinians were allowed to leave Gaza for the first time since Israel began its ground invasion of the war-ravaged territory. Footage on Egypt’s ExtraNews showed the group arrived in the country.
The Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza was reported to have been struck a second time in less than 24 hours. It comes after an overnight hit killed and wounded hundreds of people, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-run territory, drawing condemnation from across the Middle East. Israel said Hamas, which is designated a terrorist group by the US and the EU, was using Jabaliya as a training center and the strike killed militants.

Tensions mount between Israel and Egypt over the Rafah crossing I DW News
Egypt has told the United States that Israel's actions in Gaza are jeopardizing regional security. Foreign minister Sameh Shoukry discussed the need to restart aid deliveries to Gaza in a phone call with Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
The two also discussed the Israeli seizure of the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing. Cairo says the presence of Israeli troops and tanks violates a 2007 treaty. Israel's move has exacerbated simmering tensions between Egypt and Israel. So much so that Egypt has announced it will formally support a case brought by South Africa at the Interational Court of Justice, accusing Israel of committing genocidal acts in Gaza.

The Rafah border crossing in Gaza has been closed on the Palestinian side, due to the presence of Israeli tanks, according to the border authority.
Israeli tanks are now blocking the main artery bringing humanitarian aid into the strip - parts of which are already experiencing 'full-blown famine.'
That comes after a night of heavy Israeli bombardment in Rafah, in southern Gaza.
At least 14 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes, in the past few hours.
The attacks follow a unanimous vote by the Israeli war cabinet, to continue its operation in the city - and comes despite Hamas' announcement that it's ready to accept a ceasefire deal.
Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum is in Rafah, in southern Gaza and Mohammed Jamjoom is on the phone now from the Jordanian capital, Amman for the latest developments.

So much so that Egypt has announced it will formally support a case brought by South Africa at the Interational Court of Justice, accusing Israel of committing genocidal acts in Gaza.

Built as a gateway between Gaza and Egypt, the Rafah Crossing was shut four years ago and has stayed largely closed.
The crossing has officially been reopened now. While restrictions have been eased on goods entering Gaza and the limited passage for people since February, this is a dramatic change of policy from Egypt.
Egypt and Israel blocked Gaza off four years ago after Hamas took power and captured an Israeli solider. This despite the need by Gazans for medical, food and other supplies.
From December 2008 to January 2009 a conflict took place between Gaza and Southern Israel.
An estimated 14-hundred Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed, while many more innocent civilians were injured.
A year ago, a Gaza-bound aid flotilla was raided by Israeli forces. Nine Turkish nationals were killed sparking an international outcry.

The situation in Gaza’s Rafah is increasingly dire as over 1.4 million Palestinians — 1 million of whom are displaced after fleeing Israel’s attacks on other parts of the besieged enclave — are now trapped in Gaza’s southernmost city and left with essentially nowhere to go.
As Israel seizes the Rafah border crossing with Egypt — a vital lifeline for life-saving aid — and ramps up attacks on Gaza’s south, the humanitarian crisis is turning catastrophic and Israeli strikes targeting residential areas in Rafah are resulting in significant civilian casualties, including women and children, as reported by the UN.

The EU Border Assistance Mission for the Rafah crossing will resume in February, monitoring the Gaza-Egypt border to support the ceasefire, Kallas said, adding that the mission has been endorsed by Palestine, Israel, and Egypt... actions ....
The video of ArbelYehud, published last night, likely brought a sense of relief to her loved ones ... Arbel Yehud ... control over the Philadelphi Route, practical authority over the Rafah crossing, and the ongoing leverage of humanitarian aid to Gaza ... ....
Today, it wishes to open irrelevant negotiations regarding the Rafah crossing ...The idea of Israeli cameras was controversial at one time when the withdrawal of Israel from the Rafah crossing was discussed.
The aid is currently entering through the Kerem Abu Salem crossing, and soon the Rafah crossing will be operational once the necessary preparations are completed on the Palestinian side. .
Since the beginning of the flow of aid, the Rafah crossing has witnessed active movement, as shipments of basic food supplies, medicine, blankets, and medical equipment were prepared for hospitals in Gaza.
The European Union agreed Monday to restart a monitoring mission at the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt as part of efforts to bolster the truce that halted Israel's war on the enclave.
