Reel one.
Three Provost aircraft fly low over Cranwell college. An R.A.F. bus stops outside the college gates, inside the bus young cadets in civilian cloths look through the window at the planes and the college. We identify Howard and Ellis as they watch the Provosts peel off in different directions. In the college entrance hall Howard and Ellis take the Oath of Allegiance. On the walls are portraits of famous airmen, Lord Trenchard and Douglas Bader. In stores Howard and Ellis receive their flying equipment and helmet and Howard is being measured for his uniform. In a classroom the cadets are being lectured on the principle of flight. In front of the main building Senior Cadet Officer takes the salute as the R.A.F. flag is lowered.
A Sergeant shouts at Howard as a squad of cadets march up and down. Interior, an instructor lectures around a jet engine, we see the engine turning. On a runway cadets cluster around a jet aircraft as an instructor points out features. Air to air a Chipmonk is in flight, in the cockpit Ellis receives instruction. In small cubicles Ellis and other cadets are being instructed in navigation, they talk into mouth pieces and plot their routes on charts. Howard and Ellis are seen studying in their rooms and the library. Ellis receives individual tuition from a tutor in front of a cosy fire.
The cadets are seen cross-country running, sailing dinghies on a river, playing football and rugby. In Scotland the cadets are erecting tents by a lake, an officer looks on as they cook and adjust their tents. In the air, Howard sitting next to his instructor, is flying a jet Provost.
On the tarmac Provosts are lined up. In the Squadron Operations room a senior instructor briefs the cadets with words like "echelon starboard and run in". The cadets drink coffee and chat in their crew room, two of them walk out onto the tarmac. In the cockpit of a Provost Howard is being briefed before flying solo. As the instructor drives to the control tower in a Landrover, we see details in the cockpit as Howard prepares for his flight. Air to Air we see the plane take off and fly, intercut between Howard and the control tower giving instructions. The plain lands successfully.Back on the tarmac Howard is criticised by his instructor, undaunted Howard joins his pal Ellis and others and they move off together.
A Valetta aircraft is in flight, inside a Navigation instructor walks down the gangway talking to cadets as they check their maps. Shots of the Valetta in flight. Shot looking up at the clock tower pan down to entrance of the main Cranwell building as cadets enter. Inside the cadets walk to their various activities. A French lesson, radio or radar equipment demonstration, a group of cadets around a wind tunnel demonstration showing aerofoils under pressure.
Officers and cadets attend a grand diner in full military evening dress, a military band plays music. A batman brings Howard his uniform, Ellis joins him, they are now senior cadets and they plan a flight on a map. Provosts in the air flying over countryside and buildings. Air to air shots VG pictures as they fly in formation and do aerobatics.
In a large classroom the cadets ask military questions to a British Major and a U.S.A.A.A.F. Major, places are pointed to on wall maps.
Air to Air Valetta in flight, navigator speaks to pilot, he looks at his watch and the pilot gives a thumbs up. All is well and the plane flies on.
