Hemango Biswas Archive, Rongili Biswas sings " Zaina Yaoyuan de defang", snippet
One of my most favourite tunes, “Zaina Yaoyuan de defang” ( 在那遥远的地方).
Hemango Biswas translated this song from original Chinese in 1958 as “ দূরে নীল পাহাড়ের, গায়ে ঘেঁষা গাঁয়ে”. Here are some rehearsal snippets joined together from the pre-recording sessions at Peking University, School of Foreign Languages, New Building studio, October 2024. The final recorded version will be out soon, we hope.

Luobin graduated from the Music Department of Beijing Normal University in 1934. In 1938, in Lanzhou in Gansu Province, Wang published his first Xinjiang-in...

One of the largest provinces of China is at the same time one of the most sparsely populated areas in the world. Qinghai, also known as Kokonor is a place I bet you never heard of. So hold on tight, cause it's about to get interesting.

Introduction:
'“In a Faraway Place” is a Chinese romantic song with a northwestern setting, where nomadic groups abound, composed by the researcher, collector, ethnomusicologist and songwriter Wang Luobin (December 28, 1913—March 14, 1996). Luobin graduated from the Music Department of Beijing Normal University in 1934. In 1938, in Lanzhou in Gansu Province, Wang published his first Xinjiang-inspired song, "The Girl from Dabancheng". During the many years he was in northwestern China, he devoted much of his time to transcribing, adapting, collecting and revising western Chinese folk songs. In all, Wang wrote seven operas and edited six songbooks, and published some 700 Xinjiang-style songs.
'"Zaina Yaoyuan de defang” is one of the best-known and most loved of all Chinese songs. Wang Luobin wrote the song in 1939 while he was assisting a friend in Xining, Qinghai Province, in a movie-making project. He met a young Tibetan girl, and she was like the sunshine, making everyone around her happy. He wrote the song as a way of remembering the beautiful impression that she left upon him and all those around her. The song is set to the tune of a Kazakhstan folk titled "Thinking of You When I'm Lying Amongst the Sheep Flocks” (Qayran jalğan (Қайран жалған) that Wang had collected in the area. It became one of the most popular songs in China and one of the best-known Chinese songs in many countries. Over the years, it has taken on many forms and settings.
Lyrics:
In a faraway place, there is a good girl
When people pass by her tent, they all look back with longing
Her smile is as radiant as the morning sun
Her energetic, penetrating eyes are like a moon in the night sky
I wish that every day I could see her lovely face
And see her walking among the sheep in her beautiful gold-trimmed dress
I would give up all my wealth just to herd sheep with her
I would even become a small lamb so I could always be by her side
Wang Luobin first named this song "The Grassland Love Song" (草原情歌), but the song has later become better known by the first line of its lyrics "Zai Na Yaoyuan De Difang". The song, extremely popular in Japan as well, is called "Love Song of the Steppe"'
Translations:
Joanna Smith Finley (Newcastle University) translated it into "In That Faraway Place". Xinhua News Agency translated it into "In a Faraway Fairyland". Scotland-China Association translated it into "In That Distant Place". Su Xiaokang translated it into "In a Land Far Far Away". Joshua D. Pilzer (University of Toronto) translated it into "In That Far-Off Land". Indian historian Sarvepalli Gopal translated it into "In That Remote Place".
