Robert & Qingfeng - Encounters in China | A China Icons Video
Robert Gituru (Kenya) wanted to study for a PhD in Botany in China. Many universities rejected his application because he could not speak Chinese. But when he applied to Wuhan university and Prof Wang Qingfeng read his application. Wang had a passion for Africa after a research trip to Kenya, so accepted his application.
In Wuhan, Robert and Wang worked closely together for three years. Robert researched aquatic plants, and that meant lots of fieldwork in rural areas of China. Often Wang and Robert would do this fieldwork together.
On one occasion they were working in Hunan Province, and Robert saw a patch of grass that looked just like the grass in the highlands of Kenya – he was just thinking that a few African cows would be able to graze happily on this grass when he stepped on it. H...

He found out it was not grass but a green water plant that had grown to cover an entire pool of water. He fell in, and Wang quickly and calmly worked to haul him out of the water. Robert remembers being scared – and drinking a lot of Baijiu that night to shake the memory of it!
Robert completed his PhD in Wuhan and returned to Kenya. But he has kept his friendship with Wang – they work together on a project called the Sino-Africa Joint Research Centre, based at the Robert’s university in Nairobi. They often do fieldwork together in Kenya, working to catalogue and describe all the plant life in Africa. To do this, Robert and Wang have had to deal with flash-floods, cold weather and wild animals. Robert remembers them being chased by buffalo in the lowlands surrounding mountains, and Wang remembers having to put socks on his hands to keep warm. So far they have already described many species that are new to science.
Robert and Qingfeng continue to work together and collaborate. They shared there story on the 70th anniversary of the founding of modern China.
