‘It’s not good for public safety’: Project 2025’s extreme death penalty plan
Both Project 2025 and Donald Trump’s Agenda 47 call for a major expansion of the use of the death penalty, including for crimes not involving death, like drug trafficking and rape. Georgetown Law professor and former federal prosecutor Paul Butler explains that this may actually result in offenders going unpunished, as victims may hesitate to come forward if it could result in the death of their abuser. “It’s not good for public safety,” Butler tells Ali Velshi. Regardless of one’s opinion on capital punishment in principle, in practice, its implementation has also historically been uneven, disproportionately being applied to vulnerable populations. “It’s not actually the bad guys that get it,” Butler says.

Timothy's parents abandon him as a child, leaving him living on the streets and battling starvation during the famine. Incredibly, he manages to escape but is captured by the Chinese Army and brutally tortured for his defection. North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly executed 20 to 30 government officials following devastating floods that struck the northern region in late July, according to a TV Chosun report. The floods are believed to have killed thousands, especially in Jagang province. South Korea’s intelligence agency is closely monitoring these developments. Kim blamed officials for neglecting their duties, leading to the casualties. The floods caused widespread destruction, damaging homes, roads, and farmland.

Video tape released in Germany on Friday (23/01) by an Iranian opposition group shows a man being publicly whipped and two others stoned to death. At a press conference in Bonn, the National Iranian Resistance group said the video was smuggled out of Iran by members of the People's Mujahadeen, another resistance organisaton.

They said the public flogging and executions were carried out in a military compound in the northern suburbs of Tehran in 1992. It's claimed that the man who was flogged had been sentenced for stealing and cheating on his wife. The crimes of the other two were unknown. They died horrific deaths. Surrounded by a jeering crowd, they were wrapped in sheets and buried up to their waists before being stoned by the crowd.
