The site was originally adjacent to Muhammad's house; he settled there after his Hijra (emigration) to Medina in 622 CE. He shared in the heavy work of construction. The original mosque was an open-air building. The mosque served as a community center, a court, and a religious school. There was a raised platform for the people who taught the Quran. Subsequent Islamic rulers greatly expanded and decorated it. In 1909, it became the first place in the Arabian Peninsula to be provided with electrical lights. The mosque is under the control of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. The mosque is located in what was traditionally the center of Medina, with many hotels and old markets nearby. It is a major pilgrimage site. Many pilgrims who perform the Hajj go on to Medina to visit the mosque due to its connections to the life of Muhammad.

Visiting the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah
Before performing the umrah, an important Muslim pilgrimage to Makkah, I visited Masjid al-Nabawi (the Prophet's Mosque) in Madinah, Saudi Arabia.
What I experienced there blew me away... it's fair to say that for once, I was totally lost for words! What do you say about how you feel when you enter one of the holiest places on Earth?

Pillars of the Prophets Mosque #Madina #MasjidAlNawabi
Did you know these secret pillars existed in the Prophet's mosque! ﷺ
In the past 1400 years, the masjid of the prophet (ﷺ) has expanded from its original size to cover what was the size of Madinah at the time of the prophet (ﷺ). Within the grounds and the mosque is a huge amount of history which can easily go unnoticed. Much of this history is located around various pillars, all with inscriptions made by the Ottomans.

Before my trip to Saudi Arabia, I had no idea that I was allowed to visit Medina. It’s the 2nd holiest city in Islam and I always assumed that it was off-limits to non-Muslims (similar to Mecca) — but I was wrong! Anybody is allowed to visit Medina (even Jews!), they just can’t venture inside the gates of the Prophet’s Mosque.
I went to Medina with my local friend, Abdullah, the same guy who took me on a virtual tour of Mecca. And I really enjoyed my time in the city. There is this overwhelming spirit in the air, something similar to Jerusalem or Varanasi, and it’s something I will never forget!
