Preadolescence is a stage of human development following early childhood and preceding adolescence. It generally ends with the beginning of puberty, but may also be defined as ending with the start of the teenage years. For example, dictionary definitions generally designate it as 10–13 years. Preadolescence can bring its own challenges and anxieties, and, unlike most of the preceding phases, crucial elements of preadolescence are starkly different for boys and girls.
Terminology and span
Although dictionary definitions generally define preadolescence as ranging from age 10–13 years, it may also be defined as the period from 9–14 years. While known as preadolescent in psychology, the terms preteen, preteenager or tween are common in everyday use. A preteen or preteenager is a person 12 and under. Generally, the term is restricted to those close to reaching age 12, especially age 11.Tween is an American neologism and marketing term for preteen, which is a blend of between and teen. People within this age range are variously described as tweens, preadolescents, tweenies, preteens or tweenagers.
You used to have a loving child who thought mommy and daddy were the greatest people around. Then that child turned into a pre-teen -- and all of a sudden, communication stopped, the blowups started, and your child began to treat you like an intruder into his life. It happens to almost every family, and it's a high-stress period for you and your child. Join us to learn some great insights that will help you weather the storm more easily, and hopefully, with a lot less stress. We'll introduce you to the families who are going through it, show you the parent's and the child's point of view, and provide you with the expert advice you need to come out the other side unscathed.

Jennifer plays the characters of four different children, and in clever fashion, shows us how different personalities require different reactions from parents. What is the most important influence on child development | Tom Weisner | TEDxUCLA
If you could do one thing - the most important thing - to influence the life of a young child, what would that be (it’s likely not what you first bring to mind)? We want to improve the wellbeing of children - our own, in our community, and in the world, so thinking globally about this question is vital.
Tom Weisner is an emeritus professor of anthropology and psychiatry at UCLA. He studies and teaches about culture and human development; families and children at risk; and evidence-informed policies to improve the lives of children and families. He has done research in Kenya on the effects on children and parents of rural-urban migration; in Delhi, India on families and children with autism; supports for working poor families in Wisconsin; families with children with disabilities in Los ...

The Most Important Tips
•Don't continue the argument - disengage! Say what you have to say and get out.
•Don't Overreact
•Take a step back
When to Get Professional Help
•When your child's behavior begins to affect his/her daily life, or that of the parents or family, it may be time to seek professional help.
•If your child is losing friends of having school trouble
•If either or both parents are missing work to deal with your child's issues
•If you cannot conduct your life normally, due to the tween's behavior
•Ask your pediatrician or school psychologist for suggestions about therapists
Other Tips/Hints:
•Tweens are going through a developmental process - not unlike the physical developmental process the body goes through
•They are trying to create their own identities - different from their parents
•Their communication will change - from sharing all facets of their lives one day, to giving one-word answers to the same questions
•Tweens may exhibit volatility
•Backtalk becomes a frequent occurrence
•Backtalk can escalate when parents feel they have to respond in kind to backtalk
•Disengage
•Listen but don't react
•Hard to watch tweens go through things on their own, but stepping back can work.

He has done research in Kenya on the effects on children and parents of rural-urban migration; in Delhi, India on families and children with autism; supports for working poor families in Wisconsin; families with children with disabilities in Los Angeles; hippie and countercultural families and children in California; sibling caretaking and education in Hawaii; non-parental and sibling caretaking around the world; and gratitude and school achievement among Latino adolescents and families in Los Angeles. He has served on the Board of the NGO ChildFund International. He went to Reed College (BA) and Harvard (PhD). He is married to Susan Meade Weisner, and has two sons and four beautiful grandchildren.

Because they don’t pose many immediate problems, we tend to assume all is well with good children. They aren’t the target for particular concern; that goes to the kids who are graffitiing the underpass.

Jennifer Nacif tells us how to shift manipulation to motivation when it comes to communicating with our children. Jennifer plays the characters of four different children, and in clever fashion, shows us how different personalities require different reactions from parents. The needs of each personality are not only relevant to the children in our lives, but to everyone we encounter, and Jennifer provides easy and actionable ways to motivate and empower those around us.
