The Museo del Prado (Spanish pronunciation:[muˈseo ðel ˈpɾaðo]) is the main Spanish national art museum, located in central Madrid. It features one of the world's finest collections of European art, dating from the 12th century to the early 19th century, based on the former Spanish Royal Collection, and unquestionably the best single collection of Spanish art. Founded as a museum of paintings and sculpture in 1819, it also contains important collections of other types of works. El Prado is one of the most visited sites in the world, and is considered one the greatest museums of art in the world. The numerous works by Francisco de Goya, the single most extensively represented artist, as well as by Diego Velázquez, El Greco, Titian, Peter Paul Rubens and Hieronymus Bosch are some of the highlights of the collection.
The collection currently comprises around 7,600 paintings, 1,000 sculptures, 4,800 prints and 8,200 drawings, in addition to a large number of other works of art and historic documents. By 2012 the Museum will be displaying about 1,300 works in the main buildings, while around 3,100 works are on temporary loan to various museums and official institutions. The remainder are in storage. The museum received 2.8 million visitors in 2012.

If only museums could talk! This stunning new event film featuring Jeremy Irons would like to do just that: let the Prado speak for itself. Celebrating its 200th birthday in 2019, the Prado Museum will tell the story of its life, and take you on a spectacular journey in Madrid covering six centuries of Spanish history. History told through art, through the eight thousand masterpieces housed in the Museum’s collections, and the story behind each one.
A painting is canvas, colour, matter, and form, but it is also the story of men and women, painters and kings, palaces and queens, wealth and misery, body and soul.

The numerous works by Francisco Goya, the single most extensively represented artist, as well as by Hieronymus Bosch, El Greco, Peter Paul Rubens, Titian, and Diego Velázquez, are some of the highlights of the collection.
The collection currently comprises around 8,200 drawings, 7,600 paintings, 4,800 prints, and 1,000 sculptures, in addition to a large number of other works of art and historic documents. As of 2012, the museum displayed about 1,300 works in the main buildings, while around 3,100 works were on temporary loan to various museums and official institutions. The remainder were in storage. The museum received 2.8 million visitors in 2012. It is one of the largest museums in Spain.
The best-known work on display at the museum is Las Meninas by Velázquez. Velázquez and his keen eye and sensibility were also responsible for bringing much of the museum's fine collection of Italian masters to Spain, now the largest outside Italy.
The museum is planning a 16% extension in the nearby Salón de Reinos, to be opened in 2019"

Throughout this entire year, Spain is staging celebrations marking two hundred years of a national treasure: the Prado Museum. The Prado has one of the world's finest collections of European art - including masterpieces by Velázquez, Goya and El Greco hanging on its walls. They and many others are all part of a new exhibition titled 'A Place of Memory'. And it's the starting point to kick off the museum's bicentenary celebrations.
