Power engineering, also called power systems engineering, is a subfield of energy engineering and electrical engineering that deals with the generation, transmission, distribution and utilization of electric power and the electrical devices connected to such systems including generators, motors and transformers. Although much of the field is concerned with the problems of three-phase AC power – the standard for large-scale power transmission and distribution across the modern world – a significant fraction of the field is concerned with the conversion between AC and DC power and the development of specialized power systems such as those used in aircraft or for electric railway networks. Power Engineering draws the majority of its theoretical base from electrical engineering and while some power engineers could be considered energy engineers, energy engineers often do not have the theoretical electrical engineering background to understand power engineering.
History
Electricity became a subject of scientific interest in the late 17th century with the work of William Gilbert. Over the next two centuries a number of important discoveries were made including the incandescent light bulb and the voltaic pile. Probably the greatest discovery with respect to power engineering came from Michael Faraday who in 1831 discovered that a change in magnetic flux induces an electromotive force in a loop of wire—a principle known as electromagnetic induction that helps explain how generators and transformers work.
Power Engineering is a monthly magazine dedicated to professionals in the field of power engineering and power generation. Articles are focused on new developments in power plant design, construction and operation in North America.
Power Engineering is published by PennWell Corporation, the largest U.S. publisher of electric power industry books, directories, maps and conferences.
Power engineers supervise, operate and maintain machinery and boilers that provide steam, power, heat, refrigeration and other utility services to industrial and commercial facilities.

Some electrical and an Off Grid Feast!
This week I am sharing with you my plans for the future power needs at the cabin and a recipe that my family always uses during the Christmas season.
Before installing the new battery system here at the cabin I never really thought I would have more power than I needed, so this week we will be doing Some electrical and an Off Grid Feast!
I am a complete novice builder who grew up in sunny California and thought it would be an awesome idea to build my own off grid cabin on raw land in Alaska...what could go wrong?
I have never built a thing in my life so why not a house? OH! and I can live in a trailer while I do it....and work full time! Did I mention that I am out of shape, over weight and 60? What could go wrong?

Jason gives us a closer look as a power engineering student at BCIT. He shares his passion for the field and his dreams of owning a brewery! Learn more about BCIT's Power Engineering Program: http://www.bcit.ca/study/programs/powerengineering
So how do engineers power missions in the outer reaches of our solar system and beyond? The solution is technology developed in the 1960s based on scientific principles discovered two centuries ago.
