Dr Tania Cubitt consulting nutritionist to HYGAIN talks about the most common, disabling and most painful disease in horses – laminitis. In this video you will discover what laminitis is, what it looks like within the horse (we have great animation to show the whole process) and further investigate digestive and metabolic causes.
By the end of this video you will have a better understanding what happens in the horse’s body especially the horse’s hooves and the many different causes that can trigger this terrible disease.
Intro
0:00 We are here today to talk about the most common, disabling and most painful disease in horses – laminitis. We will discover what laminitis is, what it looks like within the horse and further investigate digestive and metabolic causes.
Problem Description
0:33 We have all heard the term laminitis in horses before, some of you may have had a horse that has suffered from it. It is quite a complex disease to understand and that’s exactly what we are here to discuss.
What actually is Laminitis
0:55 Ok, let’s start with the term laminitis – it literally means an inflammation of the laminae of the horse’s foot. Laminae refers to the insensitive and sensitive tissue that is located between your horse’s hoof wall and coffin bone. We have put together some great animated illustrations to show you what actually happens inside the horses hoof and how the coffin bone rotates.
Difference between Laminitis and Founder
2:05 There are two terms that people use interchangeably "laminitis" and "founder".
Causes
2:35 Some of the causes for laminitis include a serious case of colic or untreated infections, metabolic disorders, mechanical separation, retained placenta or even stress.
Nutrition induced lamintis
3:05 One of the most common causes is nutrition induced laminitis through carbohydrate overload. We have some great animated illustration here to show what actually happens in the horse’s body.
Summary
4:09 It is advisable to carefully manage your horse’s carbohydrate content, avoid grain or abrupt changes in your horse’s diet that may result in digestive upsets and avoid sudden access to excessive amounts of lush forage before your horse's system has had time to adapt.
