Port Authority of Allegheny County (also known as the Port Authority and formerly as Port Authority Transit (PAT) and PATransit) is the second-largest public transit agency in Pennsylvania and the 26th-largest in the United States. The county-owned, state-funded agency is based in Pittsburgh and is overseen by a CEO and a nine-member board of upaid volunteer directors, who are appointed by the county executive and approved by the county council.
The Port Authority's bus, light rail and funicular system covers Allegheny County. On a few of its longer-distance routes, service extends into neighboring counties such as Beaver, Washington, and Westmoreland. These counties have their own transit systems, including several routes that run into downtown Pittsburgh, where riders can make connections with Port Authority service.
History
The Port Authority was created by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1956 to allow for creation of port facilities in the Pittsburgh area. Three years later, the legislation was amended to allow the Port Authority to acquire privately owned transit companies that served the area. This included the Pittsburgh Railways Company and 32 independent bus and incline operations.
In Canada and the United States, port authority (less commonly a port district) is a governmental or quasi-governmental public authority for a special-purpose district usually formed by a legislative body (or bodies) to operate ports and other transportation infrastructure.
Most port authorities are financially self-supporting. In addition to owning land, setting fees, and sometimes levying taxes, port districts can also operate shipping terminals, airports, railroads, and irrigation facilities.
Port authorities are usually governed by boards or commissions, which are commonly appointed by governmental chief executives, often from different jurisdictions. In Canada, the federal Minister of Transport selects the local chief executive board member and the rest of the board is appointed at the recommendation of port users to the federal Minister; while all Canadian port authorities have a federal or Crown charter called Letters Patent.
In Mexico, the federal government created sixteen port administrations in 1994–1995 called Administración Portuaria Integral (API) in Spanish, as result of the Ley de Puertos of 1993.
These are organized as variable capital corporations (Sociedad Anónima de Capital Variable or S.A. de C.V.), with the
intent of creating more private investment in a state owned sector.
PA2: The Director's Cut is the second solo studio album by Canadian hip hopproducerMarco Polo, released on November 12, 2013 via Soulspazm Records. The first installment of the Port Authority series was released in 2007 under Soulspazm and Rawkus. In May 2013, the second installment of the Newport Authority series, Newport Authority 2, was released for free as a prelude to PA2.
The album was preceded by one single – "3-O-Clock," an Organized Konfusion reunion track, along with four promotional singles: "G.U.R.U.," a tribute to the late Gang Starr emcee featuring Talib Kweli and DJ Premier, "Astonishing" featuring Large Professor, Inspectah Deck, O.C., Tragedy Khadafi and DJ Revolution, "West Coast Love" featuring MC Eiht, King Tee and DJ Revolution, and "Strange Brew" featuring Gangrene and DJ Romes.

We often hear that ordinary people owe a duty to use reasonable care while going about one’s daily business. But is reasonable care the only standard of care the law imposes? The court considered that question in Jones versus Port Authority of Allegheny County, whom we’ll call the authority.
Oscar Jones injured his arm while climbing onto an authority-run bus. Jones alleged that while he was still on the stairs, the bus started moving then suddenly stopped.

Oscar Jones injured his arm while climbing onto an authority-run bus. Jones alleged that while he was still on the stairs, the bus started moving then suddenly stopped.
Jones sued the authority. The trial court instructed the jury that the standard of care owed by the authority’s bus driver was different from the ordinary standard of care owed by a private person. The authority was a common carrier, and as such, its personnel owed passengers a duty to possess the skill, knowledge, and training to transport people safely. The jury found for the authority, and Jones appealed to the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court.

Jones v. Port Authority of Allegheny County | 583 A.2d 512 (1990)

On the G1 line to Penn Station (on the East Busway) in Downtown Pittsburgh.
We get to see one of Pittsburgh's rare 5400-series buses in action. In this video, this badass driver pushes the bus as far as the transmission's government system will allow him to! He hits the 6th gear twice, but had to drop the gear each time. If only that 6th gear was left ungoverned JUST this once....

On Thursday, the Port Authority of Allegheny County is expected to announce a new name as well as plans for the future. KDKA's Bryant Reed has the story.
