S06E03 Point Pelee National Park Review - Day Tripping
We explored Point Pelee National Park on May 5th, 2024. This is review is of a day trip as opposed to our normal camping trips. Point Pelee doesn't have any campsites for camping but they do have 24 permanent structures called oTENTiks in an area called Camp Henry. We checked out Camp Henry along with the rest of the park. We went to the tip of Point Pelee which is the southern most point of mainland Canada. We did some hikes, went on a shuttle, visited the Visitor Centre and checked out the many beaches. Join us for our tour of Point Pelee National Park.

Day trip to Point Pelee National Park | Leamington, Ontario | The Southernmost Tip of Canada
Summer is winding down and our daughter’s summer vacation is ending and we figured we will try to enjoy what’s left of the warmer weather on weekends. This weekend’s plan was to visit Point Pelee National Park which is the most southern point of Canada. Point Pelee is located in Leamington, ON and is about 315 km’s from where we live in Oakville, ON and the drive was a little over three hours one way. You do have to pay entrance fee which can be paid at the entrance unless you already have the Parks Canada annual pass. Once you enter the park you drive along a nicely paved road trees filled road. There are signs along the road asking to slow down due to turtles and snakes crossing (we did not see any while we were there though). After about a 10 minutes drive you will reach the parking lot...

Staying in an oTENTik at Point Pelee National Park
Our family stayed at an oTENTik at Point Pelee National Park. An oTENTik is a cross between a cabin and a tent. It has a wooded floor and vinyl walls. Parks Canada added these oTENTiks to the park a few years ago and they are wonderful - a true glamping experience! We also climbed the new observation tower and did lots of hiking and exploring. Subscribe to our channel to see more adventures!

Plants and Animals of Point Pelee National Park
At the southernmost point of the Canadian mainland - Point Pelee National Park, experience nature like never before. Each spring, view flocks of migratory birds, joined in autumn by waves of vivid Monarch butterflies. In winter, wander snowy trails past ice-cloaked trees and in summer, bask on sandy beaches. Whether you cycle, paddle or hike Canada’s smallest but most ecologically diverse national park, you’ll be immersed in an unforgettable eco-adventure.

Visiting the TIP OF CANADA | Point Pelee National Park | Discover Ontario | Leamington, Ontario
We visited the SOUTHERN MOST TIP OF CANADA! Surprisingly, neither of us had ever been to Point Pelee National Park, so we decided it was time to cross it off the list. Point Pelee is one of 5 national parks in the province of Ontario, and also one of the most diverse! It's found in Essex County and it extends right into Lake Erie. The word pelée is French for 'bald', which is a fitting name for the point that disappears into the lake. The park consists of marsh land, wooded areas, and of course The Tip. Definitely worth adding to your list if you've never visited before.

After about a 10 minutes drive you will reach the parking lot. The first one we found was packed and then we found out there is another larger lot.
Point Pelee is known for bird watching especially during May. It is usually the first stop for the tired birds as they migrate north across Lake Erie. It is also popular for Monarch butterflies in September as they migrate their way.
In the park there are a few beaches where you are allowed to swim however, once you get closer to the tip swimming is prohibited. This is due to the dangerous currents and there are signs everywhere. There have been deaths due to the current and anyone caught in the water swimming or wadding could also be fined.
During April to October, a shuttle is usually available and will take you close to the new viewing tower where you can get 360 view. From there you can do the short hike to the tip. However, due to covid shuttles were not running and we hiked 2.5kms one way from the visitor center to the tip. There are different hiking trails available in the park and the most popular ones are the Tip and the Marsh Boardwalk Loop which is about 1km. When we were the trees were covered with wasps and I got stung three times so do beware if you’re planning to go.
We will definitely be returning to Point Pelee hopefully in May for bird watching and also would like to take the ferry to Peelee Island from the Leamington station.
