In 364 BC, Philip returned to Macedon. The deaths of Philip's elder brothers, King Alexander II and Perdiccas III, allowed him to take the throne in 359 BC. Originally appointed regent for his infant nephew Amyntas IV, who was the son of Perdiccas III, Philip managed to take the kingdom for himself that same year.
Alexander III of Macedon (20/21 July 356 BC – 10/11 June 323 BC), commonly known as Alexander the Great (Greek:Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Μέγας, Aléxandros ho Mégas[a.lék.san.dros ho mé.gas], from the Greek ἀλέξω (alexō) "defend" and ἀνδρ- (andr-), the stem of ἀνήρ (anēr) "man" and means "protector of men"), was a King (Basileus) of the Ancient Greekkingdom of Macedon
and a member of the Argead dynasty, an ancient Greek royal house. Born in Pella in 356 BC, Alexander succeeded his father, Philip II, to the throne at the age of twenty. He spent most of his ruling years on an unprecedented military campaign through Asia and northeast Africa, and by the age of thirty he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from Greece to Egypt into northwest India and modern-day Pakistan. He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered one of history's most successful military commanders.
During his youth, Alexander was tutored by the philosopher Aristotle until the age of 16. After Philip's assassination in 336BC, Alexander succeeded his father to the throne and inherited a strong kingdom and an experienced army. Alexander was awarded the generalship of Greece and used this authority to launch his father's Panhellenic project to lead the Greeks in the conquest of Persia. In 334 BC, he invaded the Achaemenid Empire, ruled Asia Minor, and began a series of campaigns that lasted ten years. Alexander broke the power of Persia in a series of decisive battles, most notably the battles of Issus and Gaugamela. He subsequently overthrew the Persian King Darius III and conquered the Achaemenid Empire in its entirety. At that point, his empire stretched from the Adriatic Sea to the Indus River.
AllMusic rated the album with 4 stars and reviewer Scott Yanow noted: "Even at that early stage, Alexander had very impressive technique and his Oscar Peterson-influenced style was starting to become distinctive".

In this program we take a look at one of the ancient world's most cunning, capable and just all out great generals and military tacticians - Philip II of Macedon. Though overshadowed by the conquests of his son, it's likely that without his father Philip, the man who would become Alexander the Great would not have accomplished all that he did. It was Philip who reformed the Macedonian army, transformed Macedon from a poor backwater into a military powerhouse, conquered most of Greece and set the stage for the conquest of the Persian Empire. Without him, Alexander may have been little more than the ruler of a petty little kingdom in what's today northern Greece. For these and other reasons, the life of Philip II of Macedon should be studied.

Previously we have covered the evolution of the Greek Armies prior to the rise of Macedon (https://goo.gl/UpuKku), but the military of Hellenistic World became really dominant with the reforms of Philip II. Surrounded by the enemies, he used what he learned from Epaminondas, Pelopidas, and Iphicrates, to reform his armies and created one of the most dominant units of the antiquity - the Macedonian phalanx. In this video, we will discuss how the pezhetairoi were trained, what were their panoply and the combat role and much more.

The Massacre at 2 Fang River. In 354 BC, Philip of Macedon's ambitious invasion meets fierce resistance from King Edwards and his nomadic allies. Experience the strategic maneuvering, the clash of civilizations, and the unforgettable moment when Philip's fate is sealed on the battlefield. #totalwar #ancienthistory #miltary
In the tumultuous year of 354 BC, the ancient world bore witness to the cataclysmic event known as 'The Massacre at 2 Fang River,' a clash of titans that would forever echo through the annals of history.
Philip of Macedon, the ambitious conqueror sought to extend his dominion into the sacred lands under King Edwards' jurisdiction. Unbeknownst to Philip, King Edwards, safeguarding his realm's sanctity, marshaled his forces preemptively against the impending invasion.
Recognizing the need for additional strength, King Edwards turned to his lifelong companion and trusted confidant, General Feral, rallying the nomadic tribes to their cause.
As the two armies converged upon the banks of 2 Fang River, the battlefield became a crucible of chaos and carnage. Amidst the clash of steel and the thunder of hooves, Philip found himself face-to-face with the formidable King Edwards. In a moment that would etch itself into the annals of legend, a fierce exchange ensued, culminating in the grievous loss of Philip's eye. The battlefield trembled with the weight of destiny as the tide of battle turned inexorably against the Macedonian forces.
The Massacre at 2 Fang River, stands as a testament to the bonds of friendship and the unyielding spirit of those who defend their homeland. Through sacrifice and valor, King Edwards and General Feral secured their legacy, ensuring that the echoes of their deeds would resound throughout the ages.
