Prenatal Development: What Babies Learn in the Womb
Everything starts the day your mom’s egg meets your dad’s sperm. 4 weeks later, your little brain begins to form. Epidemiologist David Barker says that whilst developing inside our mother, we are receiving ‘postcards’ from the outside world. These postcards tell us if this world is dangerous or safe if food is plentiful or scarce. Knowing nothing else, we learn from those messages. #pregnancy

Fetal Development
This video shows the three major stages of fetal development that occur during the nine months of pregnancy. The first is the germinal stage, which starts with the fertilization of the egg and ends around two weeks after conception. The next stage is the embryonic stage, which occurs between weeks 3-8 and is when organs and limbs become apparent. Last is the fetal stage. It occurs from the ninth week until birth and is when sex organs develop and organ systems and limbs develop further.

Three Stages of Prenatal Development - When does Psychological Development start?

Biology and Psychology are interconnected sciences. In this video we analyse the stages of prenatal development to understand what is happening in the womb during pregnancy, and how this connects to psychological development.
Given that motor control is controlled by the brain, and our five senses each use the brain as their control centre, there's a lot of neurodevelopment that has to happen before a baby is born.

This 3D animation features the fetal development from conception up to the 4th week following the fertilization of an egg. There are incredible scenes that show the cervix from outside the uterus perspective, the uterus viewed from the inside, the fallopian tube, eggs outside the outer membrane and inside the nucleus. Other beautiful scenes include the zygote dividing and traveling, the blastocyst dividing and traveling, implantation, and then the blastocyst begins to develop two, three, and four weeks.
This animation was commissioned by The Education Resource Fund (ERF) as part of their See Baby Grow App. For additional science-based information related to prenatal development, download the See Baby Grow App.
