The Pennsylvania Dutch (Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch) are a cultural group formed by early German-speaking immigrants to Pennsylvania and their descendants. This early wave of settlers, which would eventually coalesce to form the Pennsylvania Dutch, began in the late 17th century and concluded in the late 18th century. The majority of these immigrants originated in what is today southwestern Germany, i.e., Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg; other prominent groups were Alsatians, Swiss, and Huguenots (French Protestants). Historically they have spoken the dialect of German known as Pennsylvania German or Pennsylvania Dutch. In this context, the word "Dutch" does not refer to the Dutch people (Nederlanders) or their descendants, but to Deutsch (German).
The first major emigration of Germans to America resulted in the founding of the Borough of Germantown in northwest Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania on October 6, 1683. Mass emigration of Palatines began out of Germany in the early 18th century from areas along the Rhine River.
Pennsylvania German (Deitsch, Pennsylvania Deitsch, Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch, Hinterwäldler Deutsch, usually called Pennsylvania Dutch) is a variety of West Central German spoken by the Amish and Old Order Mennonites in the United States and Canada, closely related to the Palatine dialects. There are possibly more than 300,000 native speakers in North America.
It has traditionally been the language of the Pennsylvania Dutch, descendants of late 17th- and early 18th-century immigrants to Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina from southern Germany, eastern France (Alsace and Lorraine) and Switzerland. Although for many, the term 'Pennsylvania Dutch' is often taken to refer to the Amish and related Old Order groups exclusively, the term should not imply a connection to any particular religious group.
In this context, the word "Dutch" does not refer to the Dutch people or their descendants. Instead it is probably left over from an archaic sense of the English word "Dutch"; compare German Deutsch ('German'), Dutch Duits ('German'), Diets ('Dutch'), which once referred to any people speaking a non-peripheral continental West Germanic language on the European mainland. Alternatively, some sources give the origin of "Dutch" in this case as a corruption or a "folk-rendering" of the Pennsylvania German endonym "Deitsch".
Bruce Campbell (June 6, 1923 – March 12, 2011) was a Canadian politician, commercial contractor, carpenter, and Rotarian. He was born in Cadomin, Alberta, and resided in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, for most of his life.
Involved in the construction industry most of his life, Campbell began in 1946 as a carpenter apprentice for C.H. Whitham Ltd., and was promoted to superintendent. He was also the general superintendent of Forest Construction Company from 1955 to 1959, and founded Camwil Construction in 1959 which he operated until 1985.
Bruce served three terms as alderman of the City of Edmonton from 1986 to 1995, sitting on the Edmonton City Council.
During his tenure he served as chair of many committees including the Police Commission, City Hall construction project, and others.
Bruce Campbell was also a mediator and arbitrator specializing in the construction industries.
As a Rotarian and community leader Bruce has garnered numerous awards. A youth centre was named in his honour, the Bruce Campbell Youth Centre.
Campbell originally attended Hyde Leadership School in New Haven, Connecticut, where he was a four-year letterman and never missed a game during his career. He played defensive end all four years and started at that spot and offensive tackle his last two years. Campbell had 50 tackles, including 4.5 quarterback sacks, while blocking two PATs and one punt as a junior, and recorded 70 tackles, including six sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery his senior season in 2005. He subsequently earned PrepStar All-American honors.
Pennsylvania is Pere Ubu's eleventh studio album. The album marks Tom Herman's return to Pere Ubu's studio work after a twenty-year absence.
Director's Cut
In 2005, to celebrate Pere Ubu's 30th Anniversary, a "Director's Cut" was released which featured new mastering, alternate mixes, and two bonus tracks. David Thomas explains: "The point of doing a Director's Cut is to benefit from that older and wiser thing. I reviewed all alternate mixes from the session, sometimes discovering that an earlier mix turned out to be superior to the chosen mix. As well, 10 years later, we have access to improved mastering technology. Consequently, there is a greater clarity and cohesion to the Director's Cut. We are not going to make both versions available. The Director's Cut is the way it's supposed to be. Period."
Pennsylvania wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The climate in Pennsylvania is mild compared to surrounding states, with the moderating effects of Lake Erie to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. 119 wineries are located in all parts of the state, including five designated American Viticultural Areas. Pennsylvania is the eighth-largest wine producing state in the country.

Who are the “Pennsylvania Dutch”? The history of Germans in America
Anyone whos driven though south eastern Pennsylvania can tell you somethings different about the place to other areas in the region. you may also have noticed some cities and neighborhoods scattered throughout the United States have a distinctly German flavor. Today, millions of Americas claim Germans heritage, where that influence came from, how it got here and how it was eventually entered into the mainstream is a tale as old as America itself.

Today, millions of Americas claim Germans heritage, where that influence came from, how it got here and how it was eventually entered into the mainstream is a tale as old as America itself.

Pennsylvania German language
Pennsylvania German is a variety of West Central German spoken by the Amish and Old Order Mennonites in the United States and Canada, closely related to the Palatine dialects. There are possibly more than 300,000 native speakers in North America.
It has traditionally been the language of the Pennsylvania Dutch, descendants of late 17th- and early 18th-century immigrants to Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina from southern Germany, eastern France and Switzerland. Although for many, the term 'Pennsylvania Dutch' is often taken to refer to the Amish and related Old Order groups exclusively, the term should not imply a connection to any particular religious group.

Conversations with the Amish (2015)
While growing up in the Midwest, I would see the Amish now and again. I was under the preconceived notion that they were standoffish, but I never really tried to talk with them.
In August 2015, I met with the Amish to see if we could understand each other’s German; I speak High German, the form spoken by most in Germany, and they speak a mixture of an old dialect of German or Swiss German with many English words thrown in. I was not allowed to film them – just record their voices. I have included pictures that I found online, with the exception of the first four in the second conversation with Ivan and Ruth Chupp, which are pictures taken during the visit. You can see what their store looks like and what they sell.
Although we could understand each other relatively well, the conversation was not always easy. I have added subtitles for what I can understand. Otherwise, you will see question marks.

Pennsylvania German, known natively as Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch and often anglicized as Pennsylvania Dutch, is spoken by as many 350,000 people in the United States and Canada, especially in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Ontario. An Indo-European language of the Germanic family, it is most closely related to the Rhine Franconian dialects of western Germany, and more distantly so to Dutch, English, and Norwegian, among others. From TLC's "Return to Amish" series, this clip shows an interaction in Pennsylvania Dutch. Two Amish girls on their Rumspringa from Clintonville, Pennsylvania speak with their families about going to Florida.

Dr. William Donner, professor in the Dept. of Anthropology/Sociology at Kutztown University, leads a discussion about the history of the Pennsylvania German Culture. He discusses the region's strong approach to a multicultural education, which had a strong impact on the founding of then Keystone State Normal School. Dr. Donner's book on the subject is recently released: http://www.psupress.org/books/titles/978-0-271-07118-3.html?utm_source=CatsCust&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=NewTitleDonner
Dr. Jennifer Schlegel, associate professor in the Department of Anthropology/Sociology, discusses whether Pennsylvania German is a language or a dialect.
Patrick Donmoyer, site manager of the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center, speaks about the center and how the university plays a role in this distinct region.
