The Pearl River is a river in the U.S. states of Mississippi and Louisiana. It forms in Neshoba County, Mississippi from the confluence of Nanih Waiya and Tallahaga creeks. and has a meander length of 444 miles (715km). The lower part of the river forms part of the boundary between Mississippi and Louisiana. The river contains large areas of bottomland hardwood swamp and cypress swamp, providing habitat for many species of wildlife including sturgeon and black bears. There was once hope that Ivory-billed woodpeckers might survive here, but this now seems unlikely. The mouth of the river provides important marsh habitat along salinity gradients; these marshes have been the subject of many scientific studies. It is considered to be one of the most critical areas of natural habitat remaining in Louisiana.
Tributaries and hydrology
The Yockanookany and Strong rivers are tributaries on the upper section and the Bogue Chitto is a tributary on the lower section. The Bogue Chitto's mean low-water discharge is nearly six times the mean low-water discharge of the Pearl River at Jackson, Mississippi, according to a 1936 government report of the Mississippi Planning Commission. Northeast of Jackson, the Ross Barnett Reservoir is formed by a 1962 dam. Average annual rainfall is about 52 inches in the upper third of the basin, and below Jackson the basin rainfall increases to 64 inches or more. The Yockanookany River along with the Lobutcha, Tuscolameta, and Pelahatchie Creeks are major tributaries to the river north of Jackson.
Pearl River was an American country music band composed of Jeff Stewart (lead vocals), Chuck Ethredge (lead guitar), Joe Morgan (bass guitar), Derek George (rhythm guitar, background vocals), Ken Fleming (drums), and Bryan Culpepper (keyboards, background vocals). Signed to Liberty Records in 1993, the band would record two albums: 1993's Find out What's Happening, followed by a self-titled album one year later. This later album replaced Fleming with Steve Argo who was picked by Fleming to be his replacement after Fleming decided to leave the band, and Culpepper with Gary Schiera. The first album also produced a minor hit single on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts in the single "Fool to Fall". After disbanding in 1994, some members of Pearl River served as a backing band for Bryan White.
Biography
Pearl River was founded in the early 1990s in Philadelphia, Mississippi. In 1993. Later that year after gaining manager and promoter Nelda Ray from Starkville, Mississippi; while working with Marty Gamblin of Glen Campbell, they were discovered by a representative of Capitol Records, who signed the band to the record's Liberty Records division. Their first album, entitled Find Out What's Happening, was issued that year and was produced by Jerry Crutchfield. It produced one chart single, "Fool to Fall", which peaked at No.62 on the BillboardHot Country Singles & Tracks charts. The title track was later a single for Tanya Tucker from her album Fire to Fire. Also included on this album was the song "Cast Iron Heart", which would later be recorded by Blackhawk on their 1996 album Strong Enough and by Linda Davis on her 1996 album Some Things Are Meant to Be.

Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,156 people, 803 households, and 655 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 102.7 people per square mile (39.7/km²). There were 838 housing units at an average density of 27.3/sqmi (10.5/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 16.25% White, 1.43% African American, 80.35% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 1.81% from two or more races. The average household size was 3.58 and the average family size was 3.87.
Jackson is the state capital and largest city, with a population of around 175,000 people. The state overall has a population of around 3 million people. Mississippi is the 32nd most extensive and the 32nd most populous of the 50 United States.
The state is heavily forested outside of the Mississippi Delta area. Its riverfront areas were cleared for slave-cultivated cotton production before the American Civil War, but after the war, the bottomlands were cleared mostly by freedmen. African Americans made up two-thirds of the property owners in the Delta by the end of the 19th century, but timber and railroad companies acquired much of the land. Clearing altered the ecology of the Delta, increasing the severity of flooding along the Mississippi. Much land is now held by agribusinesses. A largely rural state with agricultural areas dominated by industrial farms, Mississippi is ranked low or last among the states in such measures as health, educational attainment, and median household income. The state's catfishaquaculture farms produce the majority of farm-raised catfish consumed in the United States.
"Mississippi" was a popular single by Dutch group Pussycat which consisted of three sisters Betty, Marianne and Toni Kowalczyk of which Toni (now Toni Willé) was the lead vocalist. They were accompanied by Lou Willé (g), Theo Wetzels (b), John Theunissen (g), Henk Hochstenbach, Hans Lutjens ('til 1973), Theo Coumans (from 1973) and again Hans Lutjens. Written by Werner Theunissen and produced by Eddy Hilberts, the song "Mississippi" was the sole number one single for Pussycat.
History
Werner Theunissen wrote "Mississippi" in 1969 being inspired by the Bee Gees song "Massachusetts". The song grabbed EMI Bovema's attention, and they decided to sign the band. By December 1975, the song became a massive hit seller at the number one position in the Dutch charts, followed by its international success in 1976 pushing the song into the charts across Europe and the United Kingdom as far as Africa and Australia, where it reached number one in August 1976. It spent four weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart in October 1976. In South America, it charted for 129 weeks. It is estimated to have sold five million copies worldwide.
Much of the state's lands were formed from sediment washed down the Mississippi River, leaving enormous deltas and vast areas of coastal marsh and swamp. These contain a rich southern biota; typical examples include birds such as ibis and egrets. There are also many species of tree frogs, and fish such as sturgeon and paddlefish. In more elevated areas, fire is a natural process in the landscape, and has produced extensive areas of longleaf pine forest and wet savannas. These support an exceptionally large number of plant species, including many species of orchids and carnivorous plants.
US Hwy 90 Pearl River Bridge Closure: What You Need to Know
The closure of US-90 at the Louisiana/Mississippi State Line has impacted traffic traveling between the two states, compounded by frequent accidents and traffic jams on nearby I-10. This is a hurricane evacuation route, and the only alternate route east out of the New Orleans Metro Area.

The Pearl River: 2023 Most Endangered River
The Pearl River is one of the most biodiverse rivers in the U.S. and
the primary drinking water source for Jackson, Mississippi. But this
natural treasure is threatened by a devastating private real estate
development scheme masquerading as a flood control project. This
“One Lake” project would dredge and dam the Pearl River to create
new waterfront property, destroying vital fish and wildlife habitat,
worsening Jackson’s flooding and drinking water crisis, increasing
toxic contamination, and reducing freshwater flows critical to the
region’s important seafood and tourism economies. The Biden
administration must stop this project and invest in environmentally-
sustainable flood relief for Jackson while protecting the Pearl River and all the communities and economies that rely on it.
