Ahmad, Ahmed or Ahmet are the principal transliterations of an Arabic given name, أحمد.

Etymology

Ahmad comes from the Arabic triconsonantal root of Ḥ-M-D, meaning "highly praised", which in turn implies "one who constantly thanks God." Several Arabic names are derived from this root word.

The name Ahmad has its origins in a prophecy attributed to Jesus, in the Quran in Surah 61: As-Saff (The Ranks). Some Muslim scholars see the names parallel in the word 'Paraclete' in the biblical text. This view is not universal considering translations, meanings and etymology.

Regarding Ibn Ishaq's biography of Muhammad, the Sirat Asul Allah, Islamic scholar Alfred Guillaume wrote:

Sultan Ahmad of Brunei

Ahmad of Brunei (also known as Awang Pateh Berbai or Pateh Berbai) was the third Sultan of Brunei. He was the brother of the first sultan Muhammad Shah of Brunei. He ascended the throne in 1408 and changed his name to Ahmad. He was succeeded on his death by his son-in-law Sharif Ali.

Other information

He was the first Pengiran Bendahara (Vizier) in Brunei, later given the title Pengiran Bendahara Seri Maharaja Permaisuara. He married the younger sister of Ong Sum Ping (also known as Pengiran Maharaja Lela). Sultan Ahmad died in 1425, while his son Nakhoda Angging was Brunei Maharaja in the Sulu and thus, was succeeded by his son-in-law, Sultan Seri Ali or Sharif Ali, the great Sufi Berkat.

Uncertainties

The earliest historical record of the Sultans of Brunei is not clearly known due to the poor early documentation of Brunei history. In addition there has been an effort to Islamise the history, with the "official history" not matching up with verifiable foreign sources The Batu Tarsilah - the genealogical record of the kings of Brunei - was not started until 1807. Therefore, much of the intepretation on history relied on earlier Chinese sources and legends. It seems that the early Sultanate of Brunei was dependent on Chinese support, and perhaps early Sultans were of Chinese origin. Furthermore the earliest Sultans may have been practising the Hindu or Buddhist religions, with early names indicating this origin.

Ahmad Jalayir

Sultan Ahmad was a Jalayirid ruler (1382–1410). He was the son of Shaikh Awais Jalayir.

Struggle With His Brothers

Ahmad came to power as a result of a plot against his brother Shaikh Hussain Jalayir. In 1382 he departed from Ardabil, which he had been given control of, and took Tabriz; Husain was captured and executed. Ahmad's other brothers, Shaikh 'Ali and Bayazid opposed him; Husain's former amir, 'Adil Aqa, had Bayazid proclaimed sultan in Soltaniyeh, while Shaikh 'Ali prepared to leave Baghdad and march on Tabriz. To secure his position, Ahmad requested the assistance of the Black Sheep Turkmen. Shaikh 'Ali fell in battle against the Turkmen; within two years Ahmad was also able to neutralize Bayazid (see Bayazid (Jalayirids) for further details).

Conflict With Timur

In the spring of 1384 the Chagatai amir Timur attacked the Jalayirids. Although Sultan Ahmad was not captured, his subordinates in Soltaniyeh failed to defend the town and Timur took it with a minimum of resistance. Timur gave the town to 'Adil Aqa, who had defected to him, before retiring from the campaign. Ahmad then sent an army to retake Soltaniyeh, but 'Adil Aqa successfully defended it.

In the wake of his death in 1405, his successors fought over the scraps of empire, leading to its political decline over the next century. Despite this, Timurid cities such as Herat and Samarkand retained its place as centres of learning and art, inaugurating a period referred to as the Timurid Renaissance. At the same time as civil wars between family members were destroying the territorial integrity of the realm, incredible buildings were being constructed and leading scholars were finding patronage. As the founder of the Timurid Empire in Persia and Central Asia, he became the first ruler in the Timurid dynasty. According to John Joseph Saunders, Timur was "the product of an islamized and iranized society", and not steppe nomadic.Born into the Barlas confederation in Transoxiana (in modern-day Uzbekistan) on 9 April 1336, Timur gained control of the western Chagatai Khanate by 1370. From that base, he led military campaigns across Western, South and Central Asia, the Caucasus and southern Russia, and emerged as the most powerful ruler in the Muslim world after defeating the Mamluks of Egypt and Syria, the emerging Ottoman Empire, and the declining Delhi Sultanate. From these conquests, he founded the Timurid Empire, but this empire fragmented shortly after his death. Timur was the last of the great nomadic conquerors of the Eurasian Steppe, and his empire set the stage for the rise of the more structured and lasting Gunpowder Empires in the 16th and 17th centuries. Timur envisioned the restoration of the Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan (died 1227). According to Beatrice Forbes Manz, "in his formal correspondence Temur continued throughout his life to portray himself as the restorer of Chinggisid rights. He justified his Iranian, Mamluk, and Ottoman campaigns as a re-imposition of legitimate Mongol control over lands taken by usurpers." To legitimize his conquests, Timur relied on Islamic symbols and language, referred to himself as the "Sword of Islam", and patronized educational and religious institutions. He converted nearly all the Borjigin leaders to Islam during his lifetime. Timur decisively defeated the Christian Knights Hospitaller at the Siege of Smyrna, styling himself a ghazi. By the end of his reign, Timur had gained complete control over all the remnants of the Chagatai Khanate, the Ilkhanate, and the Golden Horde, and even attempted to restore the Yuan dynasty in China. Timur's armies were inclusively multi-ethnic and were feared throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe, sizable parts of which his campaigns laid to waste. Scholars estimate that his military campaigns caused the deaths of 17 million people, amounting to about 5% of the world population at the time.He was the grandfather of the Timurid sultan, astronomer and mathematician Ulugh Beg, who ruled Central Asia from 1411 to 1449, and the great-great-great-grandfather of Babur (1483–1530), founder of the Mughal Empire, which ruled parts of South Asia for over three centuries, from 1526 until 1857. Timur is considered as a great patron of art and architecture, as he interacted with intellectuals such as Ibn Khaldun and Hafiz-i Abru.

As the founder of the Timurid Empire in Persia and Central Asia, he became the first ruler in the Timurid dynasty. According to John Joseph Saunders, Timur was "the product of an islamized and iranized society", and not steppe nomadic.Born into the Barlas confederation in Transoxiana (in modern-day Uzbekistan) on 9 April 1336, Timur gained control of the western Chagatai Khanate by 1370. From that base, he led military campaigns across Western, South and Central Asia, the Caucasus and southern Russia, and emerged as the most powerful ruler in the Muslim world after defeating the Mamluks of Egypt and Syria, the emerging Ottoman Empire, and the declining Delhi Sultanate. From these conquests, he founded the Timurid Empire, but this empire fragmented shortly after his death. Timur was the last of the great nomadic conquerors of the Eurasian Steppe, and his empire set the stage for the rise of the more structured and lasting Gunpowder Empires in the 16th and 17th centuries. Timur envisioned the restoration of the Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan (died 1227). According to Beatrice Forbes Manz, "in his formal correspondence Temur continued throughout his life to portray himself as the restorer of Chinggisid rights. He justified his Iranian, Mamluk, and Ottoman campaigns as a re-imposition of legitimate Mongol control over lands taken by usurpers." To legitimize his conquests, Timur relied on Islamic symbols and language, referred to himself as the "Sword of Islam", and patronized educational and religious institutions. He converted nearly all the Borjigin leaders to Islam during his lifetime. Timur decisively defeated the Christian Knights Hospitaller at the Siege of Smyrna, styling himself a ghazi. By the end of his reign, Timur had gained complete control over all the remnants of the Chagatai Khanate, the Ilkhanate, and the Golden Horde, and even attempted to restore the Yuan dynasty in China. Timur's armies were inclusively multi-ethnic and were feared throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe, sizable parts of which his campaigns laid to waste. Scholars estimate that his military campaigns caused the deaths of 17 million people, amounting to about 5% of the world population at the time.He was the grandfather of the Timurid sultan, astronomer and mathematician Ulugh Beg, who ruled Central Asia from 1411 to 1449, and the great-great-great-grandfather of Babur (1483–1530), founder of the Mughal Empire, which ruled parts of South Asia for over three centuries, from 1526 until 1857. Commonly in history, there has to be a period of political stability that is subsequently accompanied by great cultural advancements. The Timurid Empire, established by the legendary Turco-Mongolian conqueror Timur, did not adhere to this rule. Almost immediately from Timur’s death in 1405, his progeny were locked in constant conflict with each other as each sought to assert their dominance over Timur’s vast realm. This lack of political stability did not prevent the Timurids from supervising a renaissance that saw cities like Herat and Samarkand become icons of artistic glory and scientific progress. As the Timurids went to war with each other, beautiful monuments were erected, schools of art were opened up and astronomical observatories were established. In the first video we covered the early origins of the beylik, its status among the Muslim states in Anatolia and its early clashes against the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire at Bapheus and Dimbos in 1302 (youtu.be/Xfb9fIMzuRw). In the aftermath of Kosovo, Bayezid I takes the power and continues campaigns both in Anatolia and the Balkans. The events in Anatolia culminate at the battle of Kirdilim of 1391, where the Sultan defeats his Turkic opponents led by Kadi Burhaneddin. The Ottomans became the sultans of Rum getting the title of the Seljuks (youtu.be/WY4DVdCTgGY). Afterwards the Sultan continued campaigning in Europe, leading to the first major Ottoman defeat at Rovine in 1395 against the Voivode of Wallachia, Mircea the Elder (youtu.be/CQaa4idtCVE). Despite that, the Ottoman advance in Europe continued and to counter it, the king of Hungary Sigismund called a crusade joined by many nobles and retinues from the Balkans, France and beyond. This led to the so called Crusade of Nicopolis - the last major crusade and the battle of Nicopolis in 1396 (youtu.be/t1LEcJti8_s). In the aftermath, Bayezid had a free rein and he blockaded Constantinople. آل جلایر از سلسله های محلی ایران بودند که از سال ۷۴۰ تا ۸۱۳ هجری در عراق و آذربایجان حکومت کردند. تبار آنها به مغولان می‌رسید و پس از فروپاشی ایلخانان برای کسب قدرت به پا خاستند. در دوران جلایریان، سنت نگارگری و خطاطی در ایران چهره ی تازه ای به خود گرفت. هنرمندان مکتب جلایری تحت حمایت دربار «سلطان احمد جلایر» بودند که خود شاعر و نقاش بود. مکتب نگارگری آل جلایر به موضوعات تغزلی و عرفانی و عاشقانه توجه ویژه نمود. این دست کتب مانند «دیوان خواجوی کرمانی» و «خمسه نظامی» در این مکتب شکل گرفتند. هنرمندانی چون «احمد موسی» که در مکتب تبریز رشد یافته بودند با تربیت شاگردانی چون «شمس الدین» میراث هنری خود را منتقل کردند و این به ظهور هنرمندانی چون «جُنِید سلطانی» و «عبدالحی» منجر شد. جنید از شیراز به دربار سلطان احمد در بغداد رفت و در آنجا با همکاری «میرعلی تبریزی» خطاط (مبدع خط نستعلیق) به نگارگری دیوان خواجوی کرمانی پرداخت. او نخستین نقاش ایرانی است که آثارش را امضا کرده است. این نسخه مصوّر از دیوان خواجو 9 نگاره دارد که اکنون در موزه بریتانیا نگهداری می‌شود. The Jalayirids were one of the local dynasties of Iran who ruled in Iraq and Azerbaijan in 14th and 15th A.D. Their pedigree reached to the Mongols, and after the collapse of the Ilkhanate dynasty, they rose to power. During the Jalayirids era, the tradition of painting and calligraphy in Iran took on a new face. The artists of the Jalayirid school were supported by the court of “Sultan Ahmad Jalayir”, who was himself a poet and a painter. Jalayirid school of painting paid special attention to lyrical, mystical and romantic subjects. These kind of books, such as “Divan of Khwaju Kirmani” and “Khamsa of Nizami” were formed in this school. Artists like “Ahmad Musa” who grew up in the school of Tabriz, passed on their artistic heritage by training students just as “Shams-al-din”, and this led to the emergence of artists such as “Junayd-i Soltani” and “Abd-al-Hay”. Junayd went from Shiraz to the court of Sultan Ahmad in Baghdad, where he painted the “Divan of Khwaju Kirmani” with the help of the calligrapher “Mir Ali Tabrizi” (who formed the Nasta’liq calligraphy). He is the first Iranian painter to sign his works. This illustrated version of Divan of Khwaju has 9 paintings which are now kept at The British Museum.

  From the self-titled album "Ahmad" (1994) Ahmad Ali Lewis, who was born October 12, 1975 (as heard in the track "Zoom"), in Los Angeles, California, is an American emcee. Credited simply as Ahmad, he is best known for the 1994 single "Back in the Day," a nostalgic song that became a signifier for nostalgia in hip-hop culture. Ahmad is also a member of the group 4th Avenue Jones. Ahmad Ali Lewis was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. He made his recording debut in 1993 on the soundtrack of The Meteor Man with the song "Who Can." Released when Ahmad was only 18, "Back in the Day" the remix version (produced by Maurice Thompson & Jay Williams of Barr 9 Productions) hit #26 on the US pop charts and #19 on the U.S. R&B charts on the strength of its catchy hook, sung over a sample of the Teddy Pendergrass song "Love TKO." It was the first single off his first album, Ahmad. The remix of "Back in the Day" is also featured on the soundtrack of The Wood, a 1999 motion picture. Ahmad secured his first recording contract while still a senior in high school and promptly earned a gold record for his chart-topping hit. A second album was recorded for Revolution Records—a sub-label of Giant Records—but it was unreleased and he was dropped from the label. In 2002, Ahmad formed a band called 4th Avenue Jones, a collective with a sound he dubbed hiprocksoul. 4AJ secured a recording contract with Interscope Records, through Ahmad's imprint Lookalive Records. He has toured extensively as a solo artist and as a member of 4th Avenue Jones, visiting such places as the Netherlands, the U.K., Canada, Sweden, Denmark, and Zimbabwe. Additionally, Ahmad has written, extensively, for other artists. Leela James recorded the Ahmad penned single "Mistreating Me" on her LP "A Change Is Gonna Come." Also, more recently, his song "Back in the Day" was interpolated by The Dream & Mariah Carey for use on her song "Candy Bling," featured on her 2009 Island records release "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel." Wanting to provide a more stable environment for his toddler son Yeshuwa, Ahmad enrolled at Long Beach City College and graduated as valedictorian, with a 4.0 grade-point average. He was accepted as a transfer student by several universities for the fall of 2008 and chose Stanford University. Ahmad is a 2008 recipient of the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship, the largest private scholarship for two-year and community college transfer students in the country. Ahmad's transition from hip-hop artist to scholar has not gone unnoticed; in fact, his story was featured in the November 2009 issue of XXL magazine, and on the front-page of the Los Angeles Times. Ahmad recently formed a new music company called WeCLAP, an acronym for We Change Lives, Attitudes and Perceptions. WeCLAP has agreed to allow its label content to be digitally distributed through Syntax Distribution a division of Quality Junk, LLC, a firm based in San Diego, California. In support of his forthcoming release, Ahmad hosted a DJ Far mixtape titled Western Conference All-Stars. The project includes 100 of the best emcees on the West Coast. Ahmad contributed three freestyles to the project. The mixtape was released globally in mid-September, and a first-of-its-kind "VIDEOmixtape" (a 9-minute short film capturing performances of the freestyles, Directed by Justin Purser) was released in mid-December. Ahmad graduated from Stanford in June and he released his anticipated sophomore solo project "The Death of Me" on August 10, 2010 as the first WeCLAP release.

In support of his forthcoming release, Ahmad hosted a DJ Far mixtape titled Western Conference All-Stars. The project includes 100 of the best emcees on the West Coast. Ahmad contributed three freestyles to the project. The mixtape was released globally in mid-September, and a first-of-its-kind "VIDEOmixtape" (a 9-minute short film capturing performances of the freestyles, Directed by Justin Purser) was released in mid-December. Ahmad graduated from Stanford in June and he released his anticipated sophomore solo project "The Death of Me" on August 10, 2010 as the first WeCLAP release.

Ahmad, Ahmed or Ahmet are the principal transliterations of an Arabic given name, أحمد.

Etymology

Ahmad comes from the Arabic triconsonantal root of Ḥ-M-D, meaning "highly praised", which in turn implies "one who constantly thanks God." Several Arabic names are derived from this root word.

The name Ahmad has its origins in a prophecy attributed to Jesus, in the Quran in Surah 61: As-Saff (The Ranks). Some Muslim scholars see the names parallel in the word 'Paraclete' in the biblical text. This view is not universal considering translations, meanings and etymology.

Regarding Ibn Ishaq's biography of Muhammad, the Sirat Asul Allah, Islamic scholar Alfred Guillaume wrote:

At the same time as civil wars between family members were destroying the territorial integrity of the realm, incredible buildings were being constructed and leading scholars were finding patronage. As the founder of the Timurid Empire in Persia and Central Asia, he became the first ruler in the Timurid dynasty. According to John Joseph Saunders, Timur was "the product of an islamized and iranized society", and not steppe nomadic.Born into the Barlas confederation in Transoxiana (in modern-day Uzbekistan) on 9 April 1336, Timur gained control of the western Chagatai Khanate by 1370. From that base, he led military campaigns across Western, South and Central Asia, the Caucasus and southern Russia, and emerged as the most powerful ruler in the Muslim world after defeating the Mamluks of Egypt and Syria, the emerging Ottoman Empire, and the declining Delhi Sultanate. From these conquests, he founded the Timurid Empire, but this empire fragmented shortly after his death. Timur was the last of the great nomadic conquerors of the Eurasian Steppe, and his empire set the stage for the rise of the more structured and lasting Gunpowder Empires in the 16th and 17th centuries. Timur envisioned the restoration of the Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan (died 1227). According to Beatrice Forbes Manz, "in his formal correspondence Temur continued throughout his life to portray himself as the restorer of Chinggisid rights. He justified his Iranian, Mamluk, and Ottoman campaigns as a re-imposition of legitimate Mongol control over lands taken by usurpers." To legitimize his conquests, Timur relied on Islamic symbols and language, referred to himself as the "Sword of Islam", and patronized educational and religious institutions. He converted nearly all the Borjigin leaders to Islam during his lifetime. Timur decisively defeated the Christian Knights Hospitaller at the Siege of Smyrna, styling himself a ghazi. By the end of his reign, Timur had gained complete control over all the remnants of the Chagatai Khanate, the Ilkhanate, and the Golden Horde, and even attempted to restore the Yuan dynasty in China. Timur's armies were inclusively multi-ethnic and were feared throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe, sizable parts of which his campaigns laid to waste. Scholars estimate that his military campaigns caused the deaths of 17 million people, amounting to about 5% of the world population at the time.He was the grandfather of the Timurid sultan, astronomer and mathematician Ulugh Beg, who ruled Central Asia from 1411 to 1449, and the great-great-great-grandfather of Babur (1483–1530), founder of the Mughal Empire, which ruled parts of South Asia for over three centuries, from 1526 until 1857. In the first video we covered the early origins of the beylik, its status among the Muslim states in Anatolia and its early clashes against the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire at Bapheus and Dimbos in 1302 (youtu.be/Xfb9fIMzuRw). The second episode showed how a tiny beylik became a regional power with the continued battles against the Byzantine empire and other states, including the siege of Prusa (Bursa) between 1317 and 1326 and the battle of Pelekanon of 1329 (youtu.be/JPAK3stgMBU). As the Ottoman entered the Balkans, they had to face the Serbian Empire and the Second Bulgarian Empire, leading to the battles like Maritsa in 1371 (youtu.be/qBA-jdWQGJs). The Ottomans continued expanding both in Europe and Asia, leading to the conflicts with many states, including the Karamanids, culminating at the battle of Frenkyazisi in 1387 (youtu.be/bIO66-ZKNhQ). As the Ottomans managed to defeat their enemies in Anatolia, they now had time to fight against the burgeoning Balkan alliance that formed against them with Lazar Hrebeljanovic of the Moravian Serbia at its head. His confrontation with the sultan Murad I would led to the battle of Kosovo in 1389 (youtu.be/PwRfCAU7vzA). In the aftermath of Kosovo, Bayezid I takes the power and continues campaigns both in Anatolia and the Balkans. The events in Anatolia culminate at the battle of Kirdilim of 1391, where the Sultan defeats his Turkic opponents led by Kadi Burhaneddin. The Ottomans became the sultans of Rum getting the title of the Seljuks (youtu.be/WY4DVdCTgGY). Afterwards the Sultan continued campaigning in Europe, leading to the first major Ottoman defeat at Rovine in 1395 against the Voivode of Wallachia, Mircea the Elder (youtu.be/CQaa4idtCVE). Despite that, the Ottoman advance in Europe continued and to counter it, the king of Hungary Sigismund called a crusade joined by many nobles and retinues from the Balkans, France and beyond. This led to the so called Crusade of Nicopolis - the last major crusade and the battle of Nicopolis in 1396 (youtu.be/t1LEcJti8_s). In the aftermath, Bayezid had a free rein and he blockaded Constantinople. The Roman emperor Manuel II Palaiologos decided to travel to Europe to get help, but got no help in the West (youtu.be/oJQlRi2KNf0). But with the Ottoman expansion in the east Anatolia, Bayezid was on a collision course with another conqueror - Timur, which led to the battle of Ankara in 1402.   آل جلایر از سلسله های محلی ایران بودند که از سال ۷۴۰ تا ۸۱۳ هجری در عراق و آذربایجان حکومت کردند. تبار آنها به مغولان می‌رسید و پس از فروپاشی ایلخانان برای کسب قدرت به پا خاستند. در دوران جلایریان، سنت نگارگری و خطاطی در ایران چهره ی تازه ای به خود گرفت. هنرمندان مکتب جلایری تحت حمایت دربار «سلطان احمد جلایر» بودند که خود شاعر و نقاش بود. مکتب نگارگری آل جلایر به موضوعات تغزلی و عرفانی و عاشقانه توجه ویژه نمود. این دست کتب مانند «دیوان خواجوی کرمانی» و «خمسه نظامی» در این مکتب شکل گرفتند. هنرمندانی چون «احمد موسی» که در مکتب تبریز رشد یافته بودند با تربیت شاگردانی چون «شمس الدین» میراث هنری خود را منتقل کردند و این به ظهور هنرمندانی چون «جُنِید سلطانی» و «عبدالحی» منجر شد. جنید از شیراز به دربار سلطان احمد در بغداد رفت و در آنجا با همکاری «میرعلی تبریزی» خطاط (مبدع خط نستعلیق) به نگارگری دیوان خواجوی کرمانی پرداخت. او نخستین نقاش ایرانی است که آثارش را امضا کرده است. این نسخه مصوّر از دیوان خواجو 9 نگاره دارد که اکنون در موزه بریتانیا نگهداری می‌شود. The Jalayirids were one of the local dynasties of Iran who ruled in Iraq and Azerbaijan in 14th and 15th A.D. Their pedigree reached to the Mongols, and after the collapse of the Ilkhanate dynasty, they rose to power. During the Jalayirids era, the tradition of painting and calligraphy in Iran took on a new face. The artists of the Jalayirid school were supported by the court of “Sultan Ahmad Jalayir”, who was himself a poet and a painter. Jalayirid school of painting paid special attention to lyrical, mystical and romantic subjects. These kind of books, such as “Divan of Khwaju Kirmani” and “Khamsa of Nizami” were formed in this school. Artists like “Ahmad Musa” who grew up in the school of Tabriz, passed on their artistic heritage by training students just as “Shams-al-din”, and this led to the emergence of artists such as “Junayd-i Soltani” and “Abd-al-Hay”. Junayd went from Shiraz to the court of Sultan Ahmad in Baghdad, where he painted the “Divan of Khwaju Kirmani” with the help of the calligrapher “Mir Ali Tabrizi” (who formed the Nasta’liq calligraphy). He is the first Iranian painter to sign his works. This illustrated version of Divan of Khwaju has 9 paintings which are now kept at The British Museum.

Medieval Islamic history is dominated by Turco-Mongolian dynasties. One of the most impactful of these was the Timurids. Named after its ferocious and legendary founder Timur, who would take his armies across Central Asia, Persia, India, Russia and the Middle East - vanquishing anybody that stood in his way. In the wake of his death in 1405, his successors fought over the scraps of empire, leading to its political decline over the next century. Despite this, Timurid cities such as Herat and Samarkand retained its place as centres of learning and art, inaugurating a period referred to as the Timurid Renaissance. At the same time as civil wars between family members were destroying the territorial integrity of the realm, incredible buildings were being constructed and leading scholars were finding patronage. As the founder of the Timurid Empire in Persia and Central Asia, he became the first ruler in the Timurid dynasty. According to John Joseph Saunders, Timur was "the product of an islamized and iranized society", and not steppe nomadic.Born into the Barlas confederation in Transoxiana (in modern-day Uzbekistan) on 9 April 1336, Timur gained control of the western Chagatai Khanate by 1370. From that base, he led military campaigns across Western, South and Central Asia, the Caucasus and southern Russia, and emerged as the most powerful ruler in the Muslim world after defeating the Mamluks of Egypt and Syria, the emerging Ottoman Empire, and the declining Delhi Sultanate. From these conquests, he founded the Timurid Empire, but this empire fragmented shortly after his death. Timur was the last of the great nomadic conquerors of the Eurasian Steppe, and his empire set the stage for the rise of the more structured and lasting Gunpowder Empires in the 16th and 17th centuries. Timur envisioned the restoration of the Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan (died 1227). According to Beatrice Forbes Manz, "in his formal correspondence Temur continued throughout his life to portray himself as the restorer of Chinggisid rights. He justified his Iranian, Mamluk, and Ottoman campaigns as a re-imposition of legitimate Mongol control over lands taken by usurpers." To legitimize his conquests, Timur relied on Islamic symbols and language, referred to himself as the "Sword of Islam", and patronized educational and religious institutions. He converted nearly all the Borjigin leaders to Islam during his lifetime. Timur decisively defeated the Christian Knights Hospitaller at the Siege of Smyrna, styling himself a ghazi. By the end of his reign, Timur had gained complete control over all the remnants of the Chagatai Khanate, the Ilkhanate, and the Golden Horde, and even attempted to restore the Yuan dynasty in China. Timur's armies were inclusively multi-ethnic and were feared throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe, sizable parts of which his campaigns laid to waste. Scholars estimate that his military campaigns caused the deaths of 17 million people, amounting to about 5% of the world population at the time.He was the grandfather of the Timurid sultan, astronomer and mathematician Ulugh Beg, who ruled Central Asia from 1411 to 1449, and the great-great-great-grandfather of Babur (1483–1530), founder of the Mughal Empire, which ruled parts of South Asia for over three centuries, from 1526 until 1857. Timur is considered as a great patron of art and architecture, as he interacted with intellectuals such as Ibn Khaldun and Hafiz-i Abru.

Commonly in history, there has to be a period of political stability that is subsequently accompanied by great cultural advancements. The Timurid Empire, established by the legendary Turco-Mongolian conqueror Timur, did not adhere to this rule. Almost immediately from Timur’s death in 1405, his progeny were locked in constant conflict with each other as each sought to assert their dominance over Timur’s vast realm. This lack of political stability did not prevent the Timurids from supervising a renaissance that saw cities like Herat and Samarkand become icons of artistic glory and scientific progress. As the Timurids went to war with each other, beautiful monuments were erected, schools of art were opened up and astronomical observatories were established. In the first video we covered the early origins of the beylik, its status among the Muslim states in Anatolia and its early clashes against the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire at Bapheus and Dimbos in 1302 (youtu.be/Xfb9fIMzuRw). The second episode showed how a tiny beylik became a regional power with the continued battles against the Byzantine empire and other states, including the siege of Prusa (Bursa) between 1317 and 1326 and the battle of Pelekanon of 1329 (youtu.be/JPAK3stgMBU). As the Ottoman entered the Balkans, they had to face the Serbian Empire and the Second Bulgarian Empire, leading to the battles like Maritsa in 1371 (youtu.be/qBA-jdWQGJs). The Ottomans continued expanding both in Europe and Asia, leading to the conflicts with many states, including the Karamanids, culminating at the battle of Frenkyazisi in 1387 (youtu.be/bIO66-ZKNhQ). As the Ottomans managed to defeat their enemies in Anatolia, they now had time to fight against the burgeoning Balkan alliance that formed against them with Lazar Hrebeljanovic of the Moravian Serbia at its head. His confrontation with the sultan Murad I would led to the battle of Kosovo in 1389 (youtu.be/PwRfCAU7vzA). In the aftermath of Kosovo, Bayezid I takes the power and continues campaigns both in Anatolia and the Balkans. The events in Anatolia culminate at the battle of Kirdilim of 1391, where the Sultan defeats his Turkic opponents led by Kadi Burhaneddin. The Ottomans became the sultans of Rum getting the title of the Seljuks (youtu.be/WY4DVdCTgGY). Afterwards the Sultan continued campaigning in Europe, leading to the first major Ottoman defeat at Rovine in 1395 against the Voivode of Wallachia, Mircea the Elder (youtu.be/CQaa4idtCVE). Despite that, the Ottoman advance in Europe continued and to counter it, the king of Hungary Sigismund called a crusade joined by many nobles and retinues from the Balkans, France and beyond. This led to the so called Crusade of Nicopolis - the last major crusade and the battle of Nicopolis in 1396 (youtu.be/t1LEcJti8_s). In the aftermath, Bayezid had a free rein and he blockaded Constantinople. The Roman emperor Manuel II Palaiologos decided to travel to Europe to get help, but got no help in the West (youtu.be/oJQlRi2KNf0). But with the Ottoman expansion in the east Anatolia, Bayezid was on a collision course with another conqueror - Timur, which led to the battle of Ankara in 1402. آل جلایر از سلسله های محلی ایران بودند که از سال ۷۴۰ تا ۸۱۳ هجری در عراق و آذربایجان حکومت کردند. تبار آنها به مغولان می‌رسید و پس از فروپاشی ایلخانان برای کسب قدرت به پا خاستند. در دوران جلایریان، سنت نگارگری و خطاطی در ایران چهره ی تازه ای به خود گرفت. هنرمندان مکتب جلایری تحت حمایت دربار «سلطان احمد جلایر» بودند که خود شاعر و نقاش بود. مکتب نگارگری آل جلایر به موضوعات تغزلی و عرفانی و عاشقانه توجه ویژه نمود. این دست کتب مانند «دیوان خواجوی کرمانی» و «خمسه نظامی» در این مکتب شکل گرفتند. هنرمندانی چون «احمد موسی» که در مکتب تبریز رشد یافته بودند با تربیت شاگردانی چون «شمس الدین» میراث هنری خود را منتقل کردند و این به ظهور هنرمندانی چون «جُنِید سلطانی» و «عبدالحی» منجر شد. جنید از شیراز به دربار سلطان احمد در بغداد رفت و در آنجا با همکاری «میرعلی تبریزی» خطاط (مبدع خط نستعلیق) به نگارگری دیوان خواجوی کرمانی پرداخت. او نخستین نقاش ایرانی است که آثارش را امضا کرده است. این نسخه مصوّر از دیوان خواجو 9 نگاره دارد که اکنون در موزه بریتانیا نگهداری می‌شود. The Jalayirids were one of the local dynasties of Iran who ruled in Iraq and Azerbaijan in 14th and 15th A.D. Their pedigree reached to the Mongols, and after the collapse of the Ilkhanate dynasty, they rose to power. During the Jalayirids era, the tradition of painting and calligraphy in Iran took on a new face. The artists of the Jalayirid school were supported by the court of “Sultan Ahmad Jalayir”, who was himself a poet and a painter. Jalayirid school of painting paid special attention to lyrical, mystical and romantic subjects. These kind of books, such as “Divan of Khwaju Kirmani” and “Khamsa of Nizami” were formed in this school. Artists like “Ahmad Musa” who grew up in the school of Tabriz, passed on their artistic heritage by training students just as “Shams-al-din”, and this led to the emergence of artists such as “Junayd-i Soltani” and “Abd-al-Hay”. Junayd went from Shiraz to the court of Sultan Ahmad in Baghdad, where he painted the “Divan of Khwaju Kirmani” with the help of the calligrapher “Mir Ali Tabrizi” (who formed the Nasta’liq calligraphy). He is the first Iranian painter to sign his works. This illustrated version of Divan of Khwaju has 9 paintings which are now kept at The British Museum.
