8. Close of statue of our Lady of Fatima
9. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Rui Valério, Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon:
"When we see that innocent civilian citizens, children, the sick, are victims of this hideous war, this can only alert us to the urgency of us as humans to unite, to give our hands to each other and to take conscience that peace is something that only happens when it is built."
10. Statue of Jesus carrying cross
11. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Rui Valério, Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon:
"With the patriarch of Jerusalem, we send this cry to the world, cease the thunder of the weapons, cease the roar of the cannons, cease the cease this chorus of killing, let’s give our hands, because it is possible.”
12. Various of end of mass
STORYLINE:
The Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon has urged Catholics to join him in a moment of prayer for peace in the Holy Land.
Speaking during a mass at one of the oldest churches of Lisbon, Cardinal Rui Valério responded and joined the global appeal for fasting and prayer sent out from Jerusalem by Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa.
In recent days, Pizzaballa called on the wider catholic community around the world to make the 17th of October a day and fasting for peace and reconciliation.
The Portuguese Bishops joined the appeal and in Lisbon, the recently appointed Cardinal not only prayed for peace but also stressed his disapproval for the current conflict unfolding.
"When we see that innocent civilian citizens, children, the sick, are victims of this hideous war, this can only alert us to the urgency of us as humans to unite, to give our hands to each other and to take conscience that peace is something that only happens when it is built."
As the Cardinal was speaking, a latest statement by Hamas said that a massive explosion at a hospital in Gaza City killed hundreds of people, after intensifying bombardments near towns in southern Gaza rattled civilians where Israel had ordered them to take refuge.
Hamas attributed the blast to an Israeli airstrike, but the Israeli military said it was not involved and the explosion was caused by a misfired Palestinian rocket.
One attack on a refugee camp in central Gaza killed a top Hamas commander.
Thousands of people trying to escape are in Rafah, which has the only border crossing to Egypt.
Mediators are pressing for an agreement to let aid in and refugees with foreign passports out.
The U.S. hopes to break the deadlock with President Joe Biden set to head to Israel, Jordan and Egypt on Wednesday.
Aid workers warned that life in Gaza was near complete collapse because of the Israeli siege that followed a Hamas attack on Israel.

On his first day as President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa attended an interfaith ceremony with 18 different religious leaders in Lisbon.
Following an official swearing-in ceremony at the Portuguese Parliament earlier in the day, Rebelo de Sousa appeared at Lisbon's Central Mosque to share a moment of prayer with the various leaders present and send a message of peace.
Representatives of various religious groups were present, including the Catholic Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon, Manuel Clemente, and the mosque's imam, Sheikh David Munir.
Rebelo de Sousa is a veteran centre-right politician, law professor and popular television personality.
The 67-year-old takes over a largely figurehead role with little executive power, but one that can carry a political punch if he speaks out on national issues.
Having won the presidential election in January, Rebelo de Sousa swore to uphold the Portuguese Constitution in the ceremony at Parliament.
In a speech there he said that Portugal needs to heal the political and social wounds left by the sacrifices made after Portugal's 78 billion euro (85.5 billion US dollar) bailout in 2011, so that citizens were given a reason for hope in the future.
