Parma was first incorporated as a village in 1900.
At the turn of the 20th century, Parma contained two saw mills.
In 1903, Parma, along with the neighboring community of Lotta, was incorporated as a village, retaining the name "Parma."
It became a fourth class city in 1905.
On April 14, 2015, Tyus Byrd was sworn in as the first African-American woman mayor of Parma. Byrd succeeded Randall Ramsey, who had been mayor of Parma for a total of 37 years. Shortly before Byrde was to be sworn in, four of the city's six police officers resigned, along with the city's clerk and the supervisor of water treatment.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.69 square miles (1.79km2), all of it land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 713 people, 283 households, and 196 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,033.3 inhabitants per square mile (399.0/km2). There were 342 housing units at an average density of 495.7 per square mile (191.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 67.46% White, 29.45% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.56% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 1.12% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.81% of the population.
The Town of Parma, then in Genesee County, was organized in 1808, named after Parma in Italy.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 42.9 square miles (111km2), of which, 42.0 square miles (109km2) of it is land and 1.0 square mile (2.6km2) of it (2.28%) is water.
The town is bordered on the north by the southern shore of Lake Ontario, on the west by the towns of Hamlin, Clarkson and Sweden, on the south by the town of Ogden and on the east by the town of Greece.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 14,822 people, 5,283 households, and 4,030 families residing in the town. The population density was 353.2 people per square mile (136.4/km²). There were 5,502 housing units at an average density of 131.1 per square mile (50.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.08% White, 1.29% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.12% of the population.
