Landmarks in The Land: Northeast Ohio's James A. Garfield National Historic Site
While James A. Garfield may not have served as president for long, he and his family left a lasting legacy in Northeast Ohio at their Mentor home.
Right off of Mentor Avenue in Mentor, Ohio, a house, painted gray with a red roof, stands shielded by trees. Just driving by, it could be mistaken for a stately residential home whose front yard is neatly lined by a white picket fence. But a sign standing next to the driveway reveals something special about the property and its presidential ties.
This property is the former home of President James A. Garfield, his wife, Lucretia and their family. A member of the Garfield family most recently lived in the house in 1934.
According to Todd Arrington, site manager of the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, part of the National Park Syste...

Garfield National Historic Site, part of the National Park System, the Garfield family bought the property in 1876. The property included a nine-room farmhouse which served as the family home they later expanded and at one point was about 160 acres. Today, the site consists of eight acres, including the museum/visitor center, outbuildings, and the main house.
Arrington said the family put work into the home to truly make it theirs, anticipating it being their forever home. However, at the 1880 Republican Convention, Arrington described a bit of a surprise; Garfield, previously not thought to be a contender for the presidency, became a "compromise candidate" and ended up securing the nomination and eventually winning the presidency.

Fort Bowie National Historic Site is pretty unique in America's National Park System. Located in Southeastern Arizona, Fort Bowie can only be visited on foot (with exceptions for people unable to physically hike to the site), with a mile and a half hike to get to the ruins of the fort and the park's visitor center. But the hike really adds to the experience as you get to see where so much history happened on your journey. On the hike to Fort Bowie, you see where the Bascom Affair happened (which started over two decades of war between the U.S. and the Apaches), the old post cemetery, the location of the Battle of Apache Pass, ruins of a Butterfield Overland Stage Station, Apache Springs, and of course the Fort Bowie ruins. Not to mention you can stand in the same spots that legends of the American west such as Cochise and Geronimo once stood.
Visiting Fort Bowie National Historic Site is well worth the trip and a great way to spend half a day.

The Saratoga National Historical Park, NY, United States.
A quick tour of the Saratoga National Historical Park, Stillwater, NY, United States.
This is an important battlefield site because it was the site of the Battles of Saratoga, the first significant American military victory of the American Revolutionary War in 1777. Basically the hotch potch American militia fought and comprehensively beat the might of the British Army.
I literally had 45 minutes to run around the park before it was closed up so I couldn't really give a good summary of events here in 1777. All I will say is the park is a beautiful location to visit, has plenty of nice views (and walking routes) and a centre with lots of info (which I didn't have time to absorb properly).

Visiting Fort Bowie National Historic Site in Arizona
Not to mention you can stand in the same spots that legends of the ...

Nuclear safety was our job. We didn't want to be the ones to accidentally start a nuclear war
This is the last remaining Minuteman One Minuteman modernized launch control center/launcher in the world.
The reason for placing them where they are is,
first of all they're far enough north where you don't have to build bigger boosters to get into the targets in the southern most part of the Soviet Union. If we had a trade-off on missile on missile from both sides - a counter force strike okay, we would lose far less people than if we placed the missile launchers in near highly populated areas.
I served there from 1971 to 1975 there at Delta and at the other launch control centers on the 44th Missile Wing. We were operators. It was a 24-hour tour. Another crew would relieve us the next morning. We did that eight times a month back in my day. It took two of the launch control centers with two officers needed to launch anyone up to all 50 of the missiles so one crew couldn't go crazy and launch the missiles. Now there were some harrier times there where systems went awry but in all cases regardless of which side thought they were being attacked, cooler heads prevailed and they said “hey this does not look logical but let's wait five minutes and see what happens.”
In the Start Treaty of 1991 both sides took their least modified missiles, both sides cheerfully gave up their missiles there. We went from about 65,000 nuclear weapons at the height of the Cold War down to less than 10,000.
Now the launch control facilities and launch control centers those other 14 here at the missile one were sold back farmers and ranchers.
Visitors can expect to find a three-part Park. We have our Visitor Center at Exit 131, our launch control facility launch control center at Exit 127, just four miles down the road, and 15 miles heading toward Wall and Rapid City is our missile Delta nine.
We've got our Museum which is excellent and we've also got a great park movie that runs 28 minutes. The launch control center that's the Crown Jewel of the whole park right there. In the summertime you need to make your reservations 90 days in advance. The limitation there is the elevator size. It's only, it will hold six people plus the tour guide and the launch control center is very very small it's like a shipping container in size.
We offer two tours in the afternoon during the winter season. During the summer we offer four. The tour about 45 minutes, we take them through the launch control facility and the launch control center and describe the equipment and what it was like to live there and what World War III would have actually been like.

You can experience these cell phone tours and all this information is also on our website. We've got the virtual tours except there's no voice over so you can poke around though in the launch control facility and launch control center into the launcher too you go down into two maintenance areas of the missile you just don't know what you're looking at. Halifax Citadel National Historic Site Walk2021 | Nova Scotia | 4K Virtual Walking Travel Tour
Citadel Hill is a hill that is a National Historic Site in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Four fortifications have been constructed on Citadel Hill since the city was founded by the English in 1749, and were referred to as Fort George—but only the third fort (built between 1794 and 1800) was officially named Fort George. According to General Orders of October 20, 1798, it was named after King George III. The first two and the fourth and current fort, were officially called the Halifax Citadel. The last is a concrete star fort.
The Citadel is the fortified summit of Citadel Hill. The hill was first fortified in 1749, the year that Edward Cornwallis oversaw the development of the town of Halifax. Those fortifications were successively rebuilt to defend the town from various enemies. Construct...

Let's go visit a 17th century fort and a canal, in Chambly, Quebec. On this video we will visit, two Canadian national historic sites about 30km south east of Montréal on the Richelieu River a fort and a canal. This bridge we are crossing now, is an important factor for the canal. we'll visit it later in the video. This small-town is where the descendants of European immigrants settled in the 17th century. It attracts visitors to see the Fort and the Canal during the summer the fort was built to the style of classic French fortification, using local stone. It was built here to protect "new France" generally, Montréal from hostile invasions. It is free to visit the surrounding park, if you would like to visit inside the fort it is about $8 per person. You will get to see re-enactments of military drills in costume. This is the second main attraction in Chambly. These days it is mainly used for leisure crafts. In its early days before the WWI, it was used as a major commercial route between USA and Canada. Now we are on the main jetty; it was renovated and rebuilt in 2020 with more space for relaxing and take-in the views of the river. let's head back up to see the locks operation. This lock has an interesting feature I’ll get to that in just a moment. I’ve done another video on lock-operation so, I will not show how it works; the link for that is in the description. The water is being filled to lift the boat to the higher level and the boat is ready to cross to the other side. Remember that bridge we were on at the beginning of this video?
Here is where that comes to play. The interesting feature I mentioned on these locks is the road traffic needs to be stopped for the boat to pass and the bridge moves to the side to make room for boats on the canal. Once the boat passes safely to the other side the bridge is re-fastened to the road when the bridge is back in place and the road is back open all this waiting traffic can get to their destinations.

Construction and leveling have lowered the summit by ten to twelve metres. While never attacked, the Citadel was long the keystone to defence of the strategically important Halifax Harbour and its Royal Navy Dockyard.
Today, Parks Canada operates the site as the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site of Canada. It has restored the fort to its appearance when built in the Victorian era.
Today, the Halifax Citadel continues to watch over the city’s downtown core, although now its role is as a reminder of Halifax’s past and not as a military fortification. The present Citadel, completed in 1856, is officially called Fort George, named after Britain’s King George II, and is actually the fourth in a series of forts to sit atop what is now known as Citadel Hill. Its distinctive star shape is typical of many 19th century forts built by the British military and gave the garrison sweeping arcs of fire. From its deep defensive ditch, soldiers pointed muskets from every angle of its stout walls and large cannons lined its ramparts. It’s easy to see why no enemy force ever dared to attack the Halifax Citadel.
