Paleo-Indians
Paleo-Indians, Paleoindians or Paleoamericans is a classification term given to the first peoples who entered, and subsequently inhabited, the Americas during the final glacial episodes of the late Pleistocene period. The prefix "paleo-" comes from the Greek adjective palaios (παλαιός), meaning "old". The term "Paleo-Indians" applies specifically to the lithic period in the Western Hemisphere and is distinct from the term "Paleolithic".
Evidence suggests big-animal hunters crossed the Bering Strait from Eurasia into North America over a land and ice bridge (Beringia), that existed between 45,000-12,000 BCE (47,000-14,000 BP). Small isolated groups of hunter-gatherers migrated alongside herds of large herbivores far into Alaska. From 16,500-13,500 BCE (18,500-15,500 BP), ice-free corridors developed along the Pacific coast and valleys of North America. This allowed animals, followed by humans, to migrate south into the interior. The people went on foot or used primitive boats along the coastline. The precise dates and routes of the peopling of the New World are subject to ongoing debate.

History of Mesoamerica (Paleo-Indian)
In the History of Mesoamerica, the stage known as the Paleo-Indian period (or alternatively, the Lithic stage) is the era in the scheme of Mesoamerican chronology which begins with the very first indications of human habitation within the Mesoamerican region, and continues until the general onset of the development of agriculture and other proto-civilization traits. The conclusion of this stage may be assigned to approximately 9000 BP (there are differences in opinion between sources which recognize the classification), and the transition to the succeeding Archaic period is not a well-defined one.
Its starting-point is a matter for some contention, as is the more general question of when human habitation in the Americas was first achieved. While it is accepted by a significant number of researchers that the peopling of the Americas had occurred by c. 11,200 years ago, a number of claims have been made for evidence of human occupation which precede this, some as far back as c. 40,000 years. General and majority scientific consensus for these (much) earlier dates remains elusive, however, and evidence for these claims is yet to be fully accepted.

Where are the Paleoindian Sites?
Where are the Paleoindian sites? Paleoindian sites that are buried in stratified deposits are difficult to find. The best sites are deeply buried. Deep archaeological excavations are labor intensive and expensive to conduct. Proposed is a mechanized method for deep archaeological testing. The PaleoDigger machine has the potential to significantly reduce the cost of deep testing and greatly increase our chances of finding deeply buried Paleoindian sites.

Our Preservation Efforts in the East: from the Paleoindian through 20th-Century Industrial Sites

In this video, we explore the mysterious DeWulf Site, in Henry County, northwest Illinois, which has been investigated by Dr Thomas Loebel, of the Illinois Archeological Survey, and a team of archeologists since 2009.
The DeWulf Site represents a small yet fascinating window into the paleo-indian world of approximately 9000 years ago, the findings suggesting that the site had been occupied briefly and for reasons related to the ritual destruction of projectile points via breakage and fire.

Over the years, a number of researchers have publicly doubted the mainstream idea that the Clovis culture represented the first peoples in the New World. Excavations at Monte Verde, Chile in the 1970s changed the nature and tenor of these arguments. For the first time. a large number of archaeologists agreed that a site showed definitive evidence of human occupation in the Western Hemisphere prior to Clovis. As more evidence surfaced and older sites were reexamined, scholars were forced to revise the story of the peopling of the Americas. Paradigm shifts are messy and there are still just as many questions as answers, but it's clear that scholars need to test new hypotheses.
In this talk, Dr. Wernecke will review the history of Paleoindian archaeology and the evidence that debunks the “Clovis First” theory, and examine how this evidence is shifting the paradigm on how scholars perceive the early migrations into the Americas.

Paleo-Indian Peoples in the Northeast: Survival in the Ice Age and After, presented by Dr. Jonathan Lothrop, Curator of Archaeology, The New York State Museum. His focus is on the Pleistocene (Ice Age) into the Holocene period where Natives colonized 11,000-8,000BC. His research is on their technology, settlement and subsistence. He is a consultant on the Brian D. Jones site analysis.
According to Dr. Lothrop, the earliest indigenous peoples of the glaciated Northeast migrated into the region shortly after 13,000 years ago, while this landscape remained in the grip of the last Ice Age. Today, their ancient campsites are marked by small scatters of fluted points and other flaked stone artifacts. This scant material record of these first peoples – known to archaeologists as Paleoindians – testifies to an amazing story of ingenuity and perseverance in the face of daunting challenges as they spread across the eastern Great Lakes and New England-Maritimes. How and when did that peopling process happen? How did these people survive on this late glacial landscape? And how did they interact with each other across these subarctic regions? In this presentation, we’ll review current evidence from recent and ongoing archaeological research that helps to answer some of these questions. Finally, with the end of the Ice Age roughly 11,600 years ago, we’ll examine tentative indicators for how this abrupt climate change event may have affected these early peoples.

The Archaeological Conservancy’s Preserves in the Eastern Region span a long period of time–from the Thunderbird site, which contains the remains of one of the earliest Paleoindian structures discovered in the country, to the Pamplin Pipe Factory, a manufacturing facility that grew from an early cottage industry of making pipes from local clays.
Between are diverse sites including Iroquois/Haudenosaunee villages, prehistoric quarries, French and Indian War fortifications, and more. This talk will highlight some of these important sites and the Conservancy’s efforts to preserve them.
Kelley Berliner began working with The Archaeological Conservancy in 2013 and currently serves as the Eastern Regional Director, managing over 60 properties from Maine south through North Carolina, all the while working to preserve additional sites. Previously she worked as a field archaeologist, educator, and museum interpreter in the Eastern United States, Michigan, and Canada. She has a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Toronto and an M.A. in Historical Archaeology from The College of William and Mary. Her interests include public archaeology, community engagement, preservation, and archaeology of the northeastern United States and Canada.

Where are the Paleoindian sites? Paleoindian sites that are buried in stratified deposits are difficult to find. The best sites are deeply buried. Deep archaeological excavations are labor intensive and expensive to conduct. Proposed is a mechanized method for deep archaeological testing. The PaleoDigger machine has the potential to significantly reduce the cost of deep testing and greatly increase our chances of finding deeply buried Paleoindian sites.

In this video, we explore the mysterious DeWulf Site, in Henry County, northwest Illinois, which has been investigated by Dr Thomas Loebel, of the Illinois Archeological Survey, and a team of archeologists since 2009.
The DeWulf Site represents a small yet fascinating window into the paleo-indian world of approximately 9000 years ago, the findings suggesting that the site had been occupied briefly and for reasons related to the ritual destruction of projectile points via breakage and fire.

Over the years, a number of researchers have publicly doubted the mainstream idea that the Clovis culture represented the first peoples in the New World. Excavations at Monte Verde, Chile in the 1970s changed the nature and tenor of these arguments. For the first time. a large number of archaeologists agreed that a site showed definitive evidence of human occupation in the Western Hemisphere prior to Clovis. As more evidence surfaced and older sites were reexamined, scholars were forced to revise the story of the peopling of the Americas. Paradigm shifts are messy and there are still just as many questions as answers, but it's clear that scholars need to test new hypotheses.
In this talk, Dr. Wernecke will review the history of Paleoindian archaeology and the evidence that debunks the “Clovis First” theory, and examine how this evidence is shifting the paradigm on how scholars perceive the early migrations into the Americas.

Paleo-Indian Peoples in the Northeast: Survival in the Ice Age and After, presented by Dr. Jonathan Lothrop, Curator of Archaeology, The New York State Museum. His focus is on the Pleistocene (Ice Age) into the Holocene period where Natives colonized 11,000-8,000BC. His research is on their technology, settlement and subsistence. He is a consultant on the Brian D. Jones site analysis.
According to Dr. Lothrop, the earliest indigenous peoples of the glaciated Northeast migrated into the region shortly after 13,000 years ago, while this landscape remained in the grip of the last Ice Age. Today, their ancient campsites are marked by small scatters of fluted points and other flaked stone artifacts. This scant material record of these first peoples – known to archaeologists as Paleoindians – testifies to an amazing story of ingenuity and perseverance in the face of daunting challenges as they spread across the eastern Great Lakes and New England-Maritimes. How and when did that peopling process happen? How did these people survive on this late glacial landscape? And how did they interact with each other across these subarctic regions? In this presentation, we’ll review current evidence from recent and ongoing archaeological research that helps to answer some of these questions. Finally, with the end of the Ice Age roughly 11,600 years ago, we’ll examine tentative indicators for how this abrupt climate change event may have affected these early peoples.

New developments in archaeogenetics and paleogenomics, along with the latest theories from linguists and archaeologists and geologists, paint a clearer picture than ever before.
Starting 47,000 years ago in Central Asia, the ancestors of nearly all Native Americans first migrated across Siberia to the Bering Strait and its glaciers that would trap them on its land bridge for millennia. Based on the latest DNA assays from sites such as Upward Sun River in Central Alaska and the Mal'ta on the shores of Lake Baikal, this episode attempts to be a somewhat comprehensive overview of the scholarship on the subject as of July, 2022.

The Archaeological Conservancy’s Preserves in the Eastern Region span a long period of time–from the Thunderbird site, which contains the remains of one of the earliest Paleoindian structures discovered in the country, to the Pamplin Pipe Factory, a manufacturing facility that grew from an early cottage industry of making pipes from local clays.
Between are diverse sites including Iroquois/Haudenosaunee villages, prehistoric quarries, French and Indian War fortifications, and more. This talk will highlight some of these important sites and the Conservancy’s efforts to preserve them.
Kelley Berliner began working with The Archaeological Conservancy in 2013 and currently serves as the Eastern Regional Director, managing over 60 properties from Maine south through North Carolina, all the while working to preserve additional sites. Previously she worked as a field archaeologist, educator, and museum interpreter in the Eastern United States, Michigan, and Canada. She has a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Toronto and an M.A. in Historical Archaeology from The College of William and Mary. Her interests include public archaeology, community engagement, preservation, and archaeology of the northeastern United States and Canada.

Paleo-Indians
Paleo-Indians, Paleoindians or Paleoamericans is a classification term given to the first peoples who entered, and subsequently inhabited, the Americas during the final glacial episodes of the late Pleistocene period. The prefix "paleo-" comes from the Greek adjective palaios (παλαιός), meaning "old". The term "Paleo-Indians" applies specifically to the lithic period in the Western Hemisphere and is distinct from the term "Paleolithic".
Evidence suggests big-animal hunters crossed the Bering Strait from Eurasia into North America over a land and ice bridge (Beringia), that existed between 45,000-12,000 BCE (47,000-14,000 BP). Small isolated groups of hunter-gatherers migrated alongside herds of large herbivores far into Alaska. From 16,500-13,500 BCE (18,500-15,500 BP), ice-free corridors developed along the Pacific coast and valleys of North America. This allowed animals, followed by humans, to migrate south into the interior. The people went on foot or used primitive boats along the coastline. The precise dates and routes of the peopling of the New World are subject to ongoing debate.
