Why Atlantic and Pacific Oceans' Don’t Mix
The #atlantic and #pacific Oceans do not mix due to differences in salinity, temperature, and density of water in these two oceans. The Atlantic Ocean is saltier and denser than the Pacific Ocean, creating a rough margin along its waters called Halocline. This difference in salinity prevents the two oceans from mixing, even though the water from the two oceans does mix but at a much slower rate.
The mix of water from the two oceans is also hindered by differences in water density, caused by variations in temperature and salinity, resulting in a phenomenon known as thermohaline circulation. Additionally, the difference in the density between the water from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans is not significant enough for one to sink and the other to rise, which further prevents the mix.

Why Planes Don't Fly Over the Pacific Ocean
Why do airlines avoid the Pacific Ocean? You might think it was a safety issue. The Pacific is the largest and deepest of the world’s oceans. Why do airlines avoid the Pacific Ocean? You might think it was a safety issue. The Pacific is the largest and deepest of the world’s oceans. If a plane encounters a problem over a seemingly endless and bottomless pond of water, the pilots are going to have a rough time finding a safe spot to set her down.
Guessing that it is a safety precaution wouldn't be entirely wrong. When planning a route, many pilots prefer to maximize the number of airports along their path. Emergencies are incredibly rare relative to how many planes take to the skies every day. That said, it isn’t the main reason airlines tend to avoid making a straight shot east to west...

#planes #aviation #brightside
SUMMARY:
- When planning a route, many pilots prefer to maximize the number of airports along their path.
- Excluding special circumstances such as passing through the jet streams or other meteorological concerns, the fastest route is almost always the one closest to a straight line.
- On a 2D map, making a giant rainbow to avoid the Pacific Ocean looks like a much longer route. But since the Earth is a sphere, a straight line is going to look very different in three-dimensional spaces.
- The combination of the two factors, the curvature of the Earth and its extra equatorial width, mean that curving toward the poles is a shorter distance than flying (what seems like on a map) “straight” across!
- Another reason planes will sometimes brave an oceanic voyage is to take advantage of the smoother ride. Even in clear weather, there’s much less turbulence over water than over land.
- The other primary consideration for determining flight paths are air currents, namely the jet streams. These high-altitude air currents exist near the top of the troposphere.
- There are 4 main jet streams, 2 in each hemisphere, and thanks to the Earth’s rotation, they mostly flow west to east.
- Flying with a jet stream can shave several hours off of a trip, but flying into it can slow the plane down considerably.
- It’s also worth noting the risks associated with jet streams. The biggest hazard is a kind of turbulence known as clear-air turbulence, which occurs along the edges of the streams.
- The jet stream mostly affects things tens of thousands of feet in the air, and the curvature of the Earth doesn’t really matter unless you’re traveling hundreds of miles per hour over vast distances.

The Full History of World War 2, goes through the entirety of the World War era starting with the rise of Fascism in 1920s Italy, until the end of the war in 1945! It is our double-length finale and serves as the seventh and final episode in our Late Modern megadocumentary, our look at history across the world from 1800 to 1945.

The video picks up where out World War I and the 1920s episode left off , and kicks off with the rise of the totalitarian regimes in Fascist Italy under Mussolini, Nazi Germany under Hitler, and the Stalinist USSR under Stalin. We also take a look at the Empire of Japan under Hirohito and the Spanish Civil War. We check out the initial moves of those who would form the basis of the Axis Powers as Italy invades Ethiopia, Japan invades China, and Hitler takes control of Austria and Czechoslovakia.
After the start of the war, we will check out the initial Axis victories, as Hitler expands across Europe, with a focus on the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain, Mussolini across the Mediterranean and North Africa, and Japan into Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, including the attack on Pearl Harbor. Hitler's next target is the USSR, and Operation Barbarossa is launched, the largest invasion force in history.
As the Axis forces seem insurmountable, we check out the domestic front in Nazi Germany, including its conquered territories in Poland and Eastern Europe, where ghettos, concentration camps and extermination camps were set up for Jews, Communists, and those deemed Untermensch (subhuman). We also take a look at Japan's conquests and their propaganda promoting the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, as well as the Stakhanovite movement in the USSR, and the entry of a new player to the war: the United States.
We then check out the series of turning points in the different theatres of war (El Alamein in North Africa, Stalingrad in Europe, Midway in the Pacific), that eventually led to the tide shifting against the Axis. The D-Day landings, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Battle of Berlin all marked the end of the war in Europe, while Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the use of a devastating new atomic bomb onHiroshima and Nagasaki, brought the end in the Pacific.
These are the strategic decisions, epic confrontations, and far-reaching consequences of the deadliest war in human history.

The Malayan campaign was a military campaign fought by Allied and Axis forces in Malaya, from 8 December 1941 – 15 February 1942 during the Second World War. It was dominated by land battles between British Commonwealth army units and the Imperial Japanese Army, with minor skirmishes at the beginning of the campaign between British Commonwealth and Royal Thai Police. The Japanese had air and naval supremacy from the opening days of the campaign. For the British, Indian, Australian, and Malayan forces defending the colony, the campaign was a total disaster.

The operation is notable for the Japanese use of bicycle infantry, which allowed troops to carry more equipment and swiftly move through thick jungle terrain. Royal Engineers, equipped with demolition charges, destroyed over a hundred bridges during the retreat, yet this did little to delay the Japanese. By the time the Japanese had captured Singapore, they had suffered 9,657 casualties; Allied losses totaled 145,703, including 15,703 casualties and 130,000 captured.
On 31 January, the last organised Allied forces left Malaya, and Allied engineers blew a 70 ft (21 m)-wide hole in the causeway that linked Johore and Singapore; a few stragglers would wade across over the next few days. Japanese raiders and infiltrators, often disguised as Singaporean civilians, began to cross the Straits of Johor in inflatable boats soon afterwards.[citation needed]
In less than two months, the Battle for Malaya had ended in comprehensive defeat for the Commonwealth forces and their retreat from the Malay Peninsula to the fortress of Singapore. Nearly 50,000 Commonwealth troops had been captured or killed during the battle. The Japanese Army invaded the island of Singapore on 7 February and completed their conquest of the island on 15 February, capturing 80,000 more prisoners out of the 85,000 allied defenders.[citation needed] The final battle before the surrender was with the Malay Regiment at Bukit Candu on 14 February.
By the end of January, Heenan had been court-martialled for spying for the Japanese and sentenced to death. On 13 February, five days after the invasion of Singapore Island, and with Japanese forces approaching the city centre, he was taken by military police to the waterside and was hastily executed. His body was thrown into the sea.
