Metamorphoses presented by Bethany Lutheran College
Based on Ovid’s transformation myths, Metamorphoses mixes the ancient stories with contemporary language, humor, and thought. This is all enacted in and around a large pool of water, the elemental giver of life and vehicle for change. The themes of love, the inevitability of change, and the human ability to adapt are timeless, as is demonstrated by the sometimes eerie closeness of a vignette to the original lines from Ovid, which still manage to resonate in modern times.

Metamorphoses by Ovid Written 1 A.C.E.
Translated by Sir Samuel Garth, John Dryden, et al
Today I have re-released my reading of Ovid’s monumental epic poem of transformation. Every archetype known to modern man stems from this 2000 year old work. It has spawned countless works of art of every kind in every modality. I used the Samuel Garth, John Dryden (& company) translations because the language is flawless. The 15 books comprised herein require over 17 hours of listening… I have no idea how many hours it took me to find all the illustrations and of course to record and edit them all. The full playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7Wr1VPtVzqVvMEpCgtwTcCQS-aCpak0x&si=bPyHYaA_zxCb7kqY

In many of the stories, mythical characters are used to illustrate examples of obedience or disobedience toward the gods, and for their actions are either rewarded or punished by a final transformation into some animal, vegetable, or astronomical form. The importance of metamorphosis is more apparent than real, however; the essential theme of the poem is passion (pathos), and that gives it more unity than all the ingenious linking and framing devices the poet uses. The erotic emphasis that had dominated Ovid’s earlier poetry is broadened and deepened into an exploration of nearly every variety of human emotion—for his gods are nothing if not human. That undertaking brought out, as his earlier work had not, Ovid’s full powers: his wit and rhetorical brilliance, his mythological learning, and the peculiar qualities of his fertile imagination. The vast quantities of verse in both Greek and Latin that Ovid had read and assimilated are transformed, through a process of creative adaptation, into original and unforeseen guises. By his genius for narrative and vivid description, Ovid gave to scores of Greek legends, some of them little known before, their definitive form for subsequent generations. No single work of literature has done more to transmit the riches of the Greek imagination to posterity. By 8 ce the Metamorphoses was complete, if not yet formally published; and it was at that moment, when Ovid seemed securely placed on a pinnacle of successful achievement, that he was banished to Tomis by the emperor Augustus.

Philip Glass - Metamorphosis (1988)
I made this record using an old amazing (one of my favorite instrument actually) Steinway & Sons model O grand piano. (Steinway officially stopped production of the Model O in 1924, but I guess this one was built around 1925-1926 according to serial number)
"Metamorphosis One" – 00:00
"Metamorphosis Two" – 06:54
"Metamorphosis Three" – 13:59
"Metamorphosis Four" – 19:09
"Metamorphosis Five" – 26:29

Starting today, Metamorphosis are available in all major streaming services*
Listen / Love / Share: https://album.link/T6mHCbPks7X4w
"Metamorphosis", refers to and was inspired by the 1915 short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. While all pieces were written in 1988, some were written for a staging of Metamorphosis, while others were for a documentary film called The Thin Blue Line directed by Errol Morris.
"Metamorphosis One" is played in an episode of Battlestar Galactica by Kara "Starbuck" Thrace. Within the narrative, her father composed and performed the piece. It is also played in the series finale of Person of Interest, Return 0. "Metamorphosis Two" formed the basis of one of the main musical themes in the film The Hours. It is also the song that the American rock band Pearl Jam uses as their introduction music to concerts.
*I prepared this release to celebrate 4 million streams of this composition in my interpretation on Youtube (a bit late though, because the number of views has grown since then). After several unlucky attempts to make this recording on different instruments and in different studios I returned to the same living room and the same piano - Steinway & Sons model O made in 1926. I can not possibly explain this, but despite all the obvious technical obstacles that stand before you while recording in a regular room, with all the uncontrolled reflections, with the old piano in poor condition which makes you suffer a lot, with all the additional vibrations, rattling strings, hammers that require voicing, with a creaking chair - it turns out to be exactly how I perceive this music. So, one piano, 2 microphones, beloved Philip Glass, and my personal story with the place where this record session took place.

Course Hero Literature Instructor Russell Jaffe provides an in-depth analysis of the plot, characters, symbols, and themes of Franz Kafka's novella The Metamorphosis.
Download the free study guide and infographic for The Metamorphosis here: https://www.coursehero.com/lit/The-Metamorphosis/infographic/
In The Metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa, a traveling salesman, awakens one morning to discover he has turned into an insect-like creature.
As a traveling salesman, he is a reliable man and the key source of income for his family, and they are understandably horrified by his sudden change in form. Though his sister Grete attempts to care for him in his new incarnation, his father and mother both shun him.
His aging parents and sister are forced to take jobs and take in three demanding boarders to make ends meet as Gregor keeps hidden in his room by a mutual, unspoken understanding, spending his days reflecting on family.
Isolated in his room, he becomes increasingly depressed. Ultimately, his father throws an apple at him when he attempts to check on his mother, who has passed out at the sight of him. This sinks Gregor into a deeper depression and he loses the will to live.
Gregor’s death relieves the family and they treat themselves to a day in the countryside and begin to plan their future.
The Metamorphosis threads what might be taken as a simple horror story with observations about familial relationships and middle-class despondency. Though the main character is an insect, the story is profoundly human.
Jewish writer Franz Kafka is considered a master of 20th-century German literature, and The Metamorphosis was first published in 1915. However, the novella would not achieve popular acclaim until after his death. In fact, many of his unconventional stories were published posthumously against his wishes. Today the term Kafkaesque is used to describe the bizarre and fantastical.
The novella The Metamorphosis contains many powerful themes including mind and body, as Gregor no longer looks human, though his thoughts stay the same, revealing a disconnect between mind and body; alienation in modern life, as Gregor's transformation represents feelings of isolation; and family ties, as the emotions of Gregor's family range from love and compassion to resentment and horror. Important symbols include the woman in furs, vermin, and uniforms.

The myth of Hades and Persephone - Iseult Gillespie
Dig into the Greek myth of Persephone, who is abducted by Hades and is only allowed to leave the underworld every spring.
--
One day, Persephone was frolicking in a meadow with the nymph, Cyane. As they admired a flower, they noticed it tremble in the ground. Suddenly, the earth split, and a terrifying figure arose. It was Hades, god of the underworld. He wrenched Persephone from Cyane, dragged her into his inky chariot, and blasted back through the earth. Iseult Gillespie shares the myth of the goddess of spring.

Giant 'tree stump' impact crater spotted on Mars
This "tree stump" even has rings.
A Mars probe has snapped a peculiar image of the Red Planet's surface that looks like a giant tree stump, rings and all.
The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), a joint mission by the European Space Agency (ESA) and Russia's space agency Roscosmos, studies Mars from above, circling the planet and collecting data about its sparse atmosphere. But this orbital vantage point also allows TGO to see Mars from above, snapping images with its Color and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS) camera.
In a newly revealed image the orbiter snapped on June 13, 2021 in the northern plains of Acidalia Planitia, a strange surface feature is turning heads. From above, it looks like a giant tree stump, with concentric rings marking its years of age. However, it's not an alien tree stump, but rather an ice-rich impact crater.
(Acidalia Planitia also happens to be the landing site for the human Mars mission depicted in the sci-fi novel and movie "The Martian.")
While the crater's rings don't spell its age, the patterns within the crater can help researchers to better understand what makes up its structure and what has happened on Mars throughout its history.
One thing scientists think they can tell so far about the crater is that it is chock-full of deposits rich in water ice; deposits that were laid much earlier in the planet's history, according to a statement from ESA. They think that these deposits in the impact crater settled there when they did because of how the planet's tilt, or spin axis, has changed over time. A planet's tilt, as we see on Earth, cause seasonal changes, and Mars' tilt has changed quite dramatically over time compared to Earth's tilt.
During this earlier time on Mars, the planet's tilt, or spin axis, would have allowed water-ice deposits to form at lower latitudes than would be possible today, according to the statement.
In fact, the crater's "rings" and noticeable cracks are likely due to environmental changes over time. Researchers think that these features are the result of changing seasons and temperatures, causing the material in the crater to expand and contract with the heat and cold.
TGO arrived at Mars in 2016 as part of ESA's ExoMars missions to study the planet from its orbit and its surface. The mission continues to deliver images like this as well as data regarding Mars' atmosphere, geology, surface, history and more.
