In Munificentissimus Deus (item 39) Pope Pius XII pointed to the Book of Genesis (3:15) as scriptural support for the dogma in terms of Mary's victory over sin and death as also reflected in 1 Corinthians 15:54: "then shall come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory".
Our Lady of the Assumption, currently located at 350 Huron Church Road in Windsor, Ontario, is the oldest continuous parish in Ontario.
History
It was originally established as "The Mission of Our Lady of the Assumption among the Hurons in Detroit" in 1728 by the Jesuit missionary Fr. Armand De La Richardie, S.J. In 1765, a 60 x 30ft. church was erected for the Hurons and some sixty French settler families. Assumption became an official, canonical institution in 1767 under its first pastor, Fr. Pierre Potier S.J. who remained at his post until his death in 1781.
That year, the bishop of Quebec sent his Vicar-General, Fr. Francois-Xavier Hubert to be pastor of Assumption parish. Fr. Hubert initiated plans to build a rectory and a school. A shortage of land for this project was rectified by a donation of land from the Hurons on March 6, 1782. The rectory was built in 1785 and in 1786 as coadjutor to the bishop of Quebec, Fr. Hubert, who had since relocated for his new post, contributed to the building of a new church and sent two women from Quebec to establish a school.
In the culture and practice of some Christian churches — mainly, but not solely, the Roman Catholic Church — a shrine to the Virgin Mary (or Marian shrine) is a shrine marking an apparition or other miracle ascribed to the Blessed Virgin Mary, or a site on which is centered a historically strong Marian devotion. Such locales are often the destination of pilgrimages.
Some of the largest shrines arose from reported Marian apparitions to young and simple people on remote hilltops that had hardly been heard of prior to the reported apparition. The story of Saint Juan Diego's reported vision of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1531 is similar to that of Saint Bernadette Soubirous' vision in 1858 of Our Lady of Lourdes. Both saints reported a miraculous woman on a hilltop who asked them to request that the local priests build a chapel at the site of the vision. Both visions included a reference to roses and led to large churches being built at the sites. Like Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, Our Lady of Lourdes is a major Catholic symbol in France. Both visionaries were eventually declared saints.

Mary: The Assumption
Ascension Presents continues its study on Mary through the month of May in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre of Saint Mary, the traditional spot of her assumption. Dr. Edward Sri, presenter of Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother, explains that even though there is no biblical reference to Mary’s assumption, Scripture does tell us that other biblical characters such as Enoch and Elijah were taken up into heaven after living holy lives. Mary’s assumption into heaven shows that she shared in her son’s victory over death. Since she was the first in the New Testament to hear God’s word and remained faithful through her life, it’s only fitting that she should go ahead of us. What is the Assumption of Mary?
What happened to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, at the end of her life?
The Assumption of Mary is the name of the teaching that Jesus Christ took Mary up to heaven with him body and soul at the end of her earthly life.
Assumption = "taking up" = "taking up into heaven"
This teaching has been upheld by the Church for centuries in the writings of Church Fathers and in the Church's liturgy, but it was formalized in by Pope Pius XII in in his 1950 apostolic constitution, Munificentissimus Deus (44):
"We proclaim and define it to be a dogma revealed by God that the immaculate Mother of God, Mary ever virgin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven."

Why is the Assumption of Mary important?
If the Blessed Virgin Mary was immaculately conceived, that is, she was conceived and born without sin so that Jesus Christ could also be born without sin, then the question is: What happened to her at the end of her life?
Through Jesus Christ, we will experience the resurrection of our bodies, not just souls. Jesus rose from the dead body and soul. He ascended into heaven body and soul. His body is in heaven. On the Last Day, our bodies, too, will rise. People often forget this.
The Assumption of Mary is important because she precedes us in the resurrection of the body. Her body, which was without sin, is glorified in heaven.
Where is the Assumption of Mary in the Bible?
There is no Bible verse describing the Blessed Virgin Mary going to heaven as an event. The Book of Acts focuses on the Acts of the Apostles, not the life of the Mother of God. In the Gospel of John we know that Jesus asked the Apostle John to take care of his mother, so tradition states she lived with him until the end of her life.
The Book of Revelation does reference "a woman clothed in the sun with the moon under her feet" in heaven (Revelation 12:1-2).
St. Paul writes about the resurrection of Christ's body in 1 Corinthians 15:20. Jesus Christ's resurrection was the "first fruits" of those who have fallen asleep. Through the Assumption, Mary received an early share in that resurrection.
Did Mary die before being taken up into heaven?
The Eastern Church refers to the "Dormition" of Mary, that is, she fell asleep and died, then her soul and then body were taken up into heaven.
The Roman Catholic Church has left the details less defined. Pope John Paul II said that she died before being assumed into heaven, but this was not in an official capacity defining a dogma of the Church.
