"On the Beach" is the 178th episode of the NBC drama series ER. It chronicled the last days of Dr. Mark Greene as he died from a brain tumor and marked the final performance of Anthony Edwards until his return in a flashback during a Season 15 episode.
Synopsis
Dr. Greene has resigned his fate and decided to forgo his remaining chemotherapy treatments, choosing to spend his remaining days in Hawaii with Elizabeth and Rachel. He creates a "bucket list", detailing everything he wants to do before he dies, with one of the items being to fix Rachel.
As his health deteriorates, Greene makes amends with Rachel and gives her some last advice: "be generous with your time, with your love, with your life." Rachel puts a pair of headphones on him and he listens to "Over the Rainbow" as we see him walk through the empty hallways of the ER (his entrance into heaven). The next morning, Elizabeth discovers that Mark has died.
On the Beach is a 1957 post-apocalyptic novel written by British-Australian author Nevil Shute after he emigrated to Australia. The novel details the experiences of a mixed group of people in Melbourne as they await the arrival of deadly radiation spreading towards them from the Northern Hemisphere following a nuclear war a year previously. As the radiation approaches, each person deals with impending death differently.
Shute's initial story appeared as a four-part series, The Last Days on Earth, in the London weekly periodical Sunday Graphic in April 1957. For the novel, Shute expanded on the storyline. The story has been adapted twice as a film (in 1959 and 2000) and once as a BBC radio broadcast in 2008.
Title
The phrase "on the beach" is a Royal Navy term that means "retired from the Service." The title also refers to the T. S. Eliot poem The Hollow Men, which includes the lines:
In this last of meeting places
We grope together
And avoid speech
Gathered on this beach of the tumid river.
Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio), a geeky twenty four year old American man with a love of world travel, arrives in Bangkok, Thailand in search of freedom and adventure. At his guesthouse he briefly meets Daffy (Robert Carlyle), a mentally disturbed British traveler who tells him of a pristine island in the Gulf of Thailand, uninhabited and forbidden, on which there lies a beautiful hidden beach and lagoon - walled in by cliffs and untouched by the tourist industry. He explains in vague terms that he settled there in secret with a group of others, but that difficulties arose and he chose to leave. Later, Richard finds a hand-drawn map showing the island's location left for him; he then enters Daffy's room to find him dead by suicide.
The Beach is a 1996 travel/backpacking novel by English author Alex Garland. Set in Thailand, it is the story of a young backpacker's search for a legendary, idyllic and isolated beach untouched by tourism, and his time there, in its small, international community of backpackers.
It is influenced by such literary works as Heart of Darkness and Lord of the Flies, and the anonymous memoirs of an escaped Australian prisoner.
In 2003 the novel was listed on the BBC's survey The Big Read.
Plot summary
In a cheap hotel on the Khao San Road in Bangkok, Richard, a young English traveller, meets a peculiar Scotsman going by the alias of Daffy Duck who leaves him a hand-drawn map, with directions to a beautiful island with a hidden lagoon and beach, located in the Gulf of Thailand and inaccessible to tourists. After receiving the map, Richard discovers that Daffy has committed suicide. Wanting company in his search, Richard befriends a travelling French couple, Étienne and Françoise, and the trio sets out to find what they believe could be paradise on earth.
The storyline concerns issues built up in multiple Marvel comic books as part of the Marvel NOW! initiative, primarily Avengers and New Avengers. These issues include a threat to the universe by an ancient race of aliens known as the Builders. The second is the mysterious ailments plaguing the universe with Earth at the center. The third is the political ramifications these events have on Earth's relationship to the rest of the galactic community.
The story itself involves Thanos attacking Earth while the Avengers are in space uniting the universe against the Builders, with the events of the 2013 "Age of Ultron" storyline acting as a catalyst for the rest of the universe to formally target Earth. The various tie-ins tell Thanos's attack from the perspective of various Marvel characters.

Signature "Scream King", Jordan "Infinity" Suecof, was born in Connecticut. Drums were an immediate attachment and rocked on to master all things musical beginning in 1983. He began the indelible processing of making sound matter. From the bass-driven beat of the Beatles to the radiating wail of the rock era, Jordan wound down Led Zeppelin, Billy Joel and The Who. Rock warped into metal—and metal into mayhem as hip hop urban took a giant leap forward on music's center stage.
Graduation at 17, Jordan GPS'd his way to the Dirty South; first stop Orlando. His first placement came in 2005. At 21 he had a #1 Adult AC chart topper that led to the Grammy winning album The Breakthrough by Mary J. Blige. As producer of Take Me As I Am, the album also won a Grammy for Best R&B Album with over 3 million copies sold. That track also garnered an ASCAP award and major media buzz for Jordan as he took home the props for R&B Song of the Year. Atlantic Records took notice. Fast-track to Lupe Fiasco's album Food and Liquor. In 2008, Jordan's co-produced DayDreamin which also won the Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. Unfortunately, Jordan never received credit for that cut. Then destiny had a new address. ATL.

Throughout the novel, Richard is forced to confront his own values and beliefs as he becomes entangled in the island's complicated social dynamics. The story builds to a dramatic and unexpected climax, leaving readers questioning the nature of freedom, community, and human nature.

Upon arriving on the island, Richard and his companions discover that The Beach is not the idyllic paradise they imagined it to be. The community is run by a charismatic but dangerous leader, and their way of life is threatened by a number of internal and external conflicts.
Throughout the novel, Richard is forced to confront his own values and beliefs as he becomes entangled in the island's complicated social dynamics. The story builds to a dramatic and unexpected climax, leaving readers questioning the nature of freedom, community, and human nature.
