Echoes and Horizons: An Exploration of Museum Culture in Benin City – In Dialogue with Benin
Nigeria operates over 52 museums under the leadership of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments. The NCMM also works to achieve the return of plundered cultural artifacts. During the British colonial era in the 1940s, there was already an Antiquities Service, and the first national museum was founded in Jos in 1952, the same year as the Museum Rietberg. With the 1953 Antiquities Act there came the first successful export ban. Benin City has been home to the National Museum since 1973. Now two more museums are planned: the Benin Royal Museum and the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA).

Benin city the capital of Edo State in southern Nigeria, is one of the country’s oldest and most historically significant cities. As the heart of the ancient Benin Kingdom, it is a place where tradition, culture, and modernity blend seamlessly. Known for its vibrant people and rich heritage, the city reflects Nigeria’s diverse and enduring legacy. From its deep historical roots to its rapidly modernizing landscape, Benin City continues to captivate visitors and residents alike.
Benin City’s residential neighborhoods showcase its evolving character and provide insights into the lifestyles of its people. Some of the most prominent areas include the G.R.A and airport residential areas known for their upscale homes and luxurious hotels.
These areas paint a vivid picture of the city’s evolving character and provide a window into the city’s embrace of contemporary living standards and serve as hubs for high-profile residents, including government officials, influential business leaders, and expatriates. The G.R.A, in particular, is distinguished by its spacious streets lined with manicured gardens, large compounds, and a variety of modern amenities, making it a prime choice for families and professionals who prioritize comfort, convenience, and exclusivity. The proximity of these neighborhoods to major transport links, schools, and healthcare facilities adds to their appeal, ensuring that residents have access to all essential services without compromising on their quality of life.
The Airport Residential Area complements the elegance of the G.R.A with its own unique offerings. Known for its modern infrastructure and strategic location near the Benin City airport, it attracts professionals who travel frequently and value quick access to air travel. The area boasts stylish homes, trendy cafes, and a growing number of high-end restaurants, creating a lively yet peaceful atmosphere.
Venturing deeper into the heart of Benin City, we discover neighborhoods which offer a different but equally captivating experience. This bustling area features a mix of residential and commercial spaces, creating a vibrant, dynamic environment. Residents of New Benin benefit immensely from its strategic location, which provides easy access to essential services such as markets, schools, and healthcare facilities. The area is a hive of activity, with shops, businesses, and local vendors lining the streets, catering to the daily needs of its residents. Despite the hustle and bustle, New Benin maintains a sense of community, with friendly interactions among neighbors and a shared pride in the area’s growth and accessibility.
These areas collectively showcase Benin City’s multifaceted character. While areas like the G.R.A and the Airport Residential Area cater to the affluent and those seeking a luxurious lifestyle, neighborhoods such as New Benin highlight the city’s industrious spirit and the resilience of its people. Together, they form a tapestry of cultures, lifestyles, and aspirations, painting a portrait of a city that is both rooted in its rich heritage and reaching for a bright and progressive future.
Over the years, Benin City has undergone remarkable transformation, with the expansion of road networks, development of housing estates, and establishment of modern amenities.
As Benin City grows, it retains its cultural vibrancy and connection to its storied past. The people of the city, known for their warmth and hospitality, continue to uphold traditions through festivals, ceremonies, and daily life. The city’s charm lies not only in its historical landmarks and cultural heritage but also in the character of its neighborhoods, where every street tells a story of resilience, community, and progress.
The new shopping mall in Benin City, Nigeria, marks a significant milestone in the city’s urban and commercial development. Situated in a prime location, the mall offers a blend of retail, dining, and entertainment options, catering to a wide audience. Its modern architecture and state-of-the-art facilities make it a key attraction, enhancing the city’s appeal and promoting local and international commerce.
Across Nigeria, the rise of shopping malls reflects the country’s dynamic economic landscape and growing middle class. Cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt have seen a surge in retail developments, providing residents with access to global brands and modern shopping experiences. These malls also serve as hubs for social interaction, featuring cinemas, food courts, and recreational facilities.
The trend signals a shift toward urbanization and modern consumer culture, with developers focusing on meeting the demands of a younger, tech-savvy population. By fostering job creation and supporting local businesses, these malls are contributing to Nigeria's broader economic diversification and infrastructural growth.

The Benin Kingdom, located in present-day Edo State, Nigeria, is one of the most iconic and enduring monarchies in Africa. With a history that stretches back over a millennium, it is arguably one of the oldest kingdoms in Nigeria. Known for its rich traditions, remarkable artistic heritage, and sophisticated governance, the kingdom has transitioned gracefully into the modern era while retaining its cultural identity.
Edo State today is not just the cradle of the Benin Kingdom but also a hub of educational and economic advancement, exemplified by institutions like the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).
The Benin Kingdom is believed to have been established as early as 1180 AD, evolving under the leadership of the Ogiso dynasty. This era, characterized by centralized authority and progressive governance, laid the foundation for a flourishing empire. By the 12th century, Oranmiyan from the Ife Kingdom introduced the lineage of Obas, marking a period of territorial expansion and cultural evolution.
By the 15th and 16th centuries, the kingdom had become a powerful empire, with Benin City emerging as a center of commerce, diplomacy, and artistry. The kingdom's influence extended over vast territories, and its thriving trade attracted European powers, including the Portuguese and the British.
A pivotal moment in Benin’s history came in 1897 during the British invasion. Tensions over trade and territorial control culminated in a brutal assault on Benin City by British forces. The city was looted, its art treasures—including the world-famous Benin Bronzes—were plundered, and Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi was exiled.
Despite this upheaval, the Benin Kingdom demonstrated remarkable resilience. The monarchy was restored in the early 20th century and has continued to play a vital role in preserving Edo culture and heritage.
The Oba of Benin remains one of Nigeria's most respected traditional rulers. His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, the current Oba, is a custodian of culture and tradition, as well as a promoter of modern development. His leadership is a unifying force for the Edo people and an enduring symbol of their identity.
Established in 1970, the University of Benin is one of Nigeria’s premier tertiary institutions and a key landmark in Edo State. Located in Benin City, UNIBEN has become synonymous with academic excellence and innovation. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, producing graduates who contribute significantly to Nigeria's socio-economic development.
The university’s sprawling campus includes state-of-the-art facilities for learning, research, and recreation. With its diverse student body and highly qualified faculty, UNIBEN serves as a beacon of knowledge and progress, embodying the kingdom’s legacy of intellectual and cultural enrichment.
Another modern landmark of Benin is the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), headquartered in Benin City. As a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), NPDC plays a pivotal role in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
The company is involved in the exploration, development, and production of hydrocarbons, contributing significantly to the country’s economy. Its presence in Edo State underscores the region’s strategic importance in Nigeria’s energy landscape. Additionally, NPDC’s operations have spurred local employment, infrastructure development, and corporate social responsibility initiatives, benefiting the Benin community.
The Benin Kingdom's cultural traditions remain vibrant, with events such as the annual Igue Festival drawing attention to the spiritual and communal life of the Edo people. These ceremonies reinforce the connection between the monarchy, the people, and their shared heritage.
The kingdom’s art continues to captivate global audiences, with efforts to repatriate the looted Benin Bronzes gaining international traction. This resurgence of interest in Benin’s cultural legacy is a testament to its enduring relevance.
The Benin Kingdom of Edo State is a remarkable blend of ancient heritage and modernity. Its historical significance as a powerful empire, its rich cultural traditions, and its iconic landmarks like the University of Benin and NPDC underscore its role as a bastion of progress and pride.
As the kingdom continues to thrive under the respected leadership of the Oba of Benin, its legacy serves as a source of inspiration for Nigerians and a symbol of Africa’s historical and cultural greatness.

The Kingdom of Benin (Edo Empire) | West Africa's Longest Lasting State
South of the Sahara Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLivC9TMdGnL8HeSXft9g__6-XRtisNeQu
The Kingdom of Benin, also known as the Edo Empire, was a kingdom located in the Southwestern region of what is now Nigeria. Lasting for at least 600 years under the Oba Dynasty, and around 1,000 more if we count the previous Ogiso Dynasty (likely closer to 2000 years between both the Ogisos and the Obas if we go with the longest estimates), Benin was one of the longest lasting states in West Africa. Home to a capital city which awed visitors, a system of earthworks rivaling the Great Wall of China in length, and some of Africa’s most famous works of art, this kingdom is an underappreciated gem of world history.

ANCIENT BENIN EMPIRE AND ITS GREAT WALLS | AN ANCIENT AFRICAN WONDER | EDO PEOPLE
Hey YouTube Lovers, ✤ Welcome to “Hotep Neteru”✤
The fascinating history of the Benin Empire, an ancient African kingdom that existed in what is now southern Nigeria. Throughout the script, we explore the remarkable achievements of the Benin Empire across a range of fields, including architecture, art, science, and administration.
One of the most impressive aspects of the Benin Empire was its meticulously planned and designed capital city. Using fractal geometry, the city was arranged in a series of concentric circles, with the Oba's palace at the center and the homes of commoners located further outwards. This design made Benin City one of the best-planned ancient cities in the world, and it served as a testament to the incredible engineering and design skills of the Benin people.

What was the Empire of Benin?
The Benin Empire was a pre-colonial African kingdom located in what is now
southern Nigeria. It was one of the most powerful and prosperous empires in West Africa.
The Benin Empire was known for its impressive art and craftsmanship. Its bronze sculptures and ivory carvings are considered some of the finest examples of African art in the world.
The city of Benin was also one of the largest and most well-organized cities in Africa at the time. It was surrounded by walls that were over 10 miles long and up to 66feet high, making them the largest earthworks in the world.
One of the most famous rulers of the Benin Empire was Oba Ewuare I, who
reigned from 1440 to 1473. He is known for his military conquests, as well as his promotion of arts and culture.

The First Educated King In Africa: Benin Kingdom, Colonialism & The Portuguese Explorers
#Culture#AfricaKings#Education#
The Portuguese were the first Europeans to explore the Great Benin Kingdom in the late 15th century. They developed a strong mercantile relationship with the Benin Kingdom, which later led to the enhancement of civilization between the two nations. In the early 16th century, the Oba of Benin sent an ambassador to Lisbon, and the king of Portugal also sent Christian missionaries to Benin City. Prince Orhogbua was sent to Lisbon by his father (Oba Esigie) in the 16th century to school and learn the European ways of life in Portugal. He became the first literate King of Benin during the mid 16th century. The Benin people benefited immensely from the relationship with the Portuguese!
This video is part of #SouthoftheSahara, a collaboration between history channels dedicated to building a broad collection of accessible content on the underdiscussed history of Sub-Saharan Africa. Thank you to Jabari from From Nothing for organizing the collaboration, and to both Jabari and Hidden History for helping me find some of the images.

Another notable aspect of the Benin Empire was its complex social and political structures. The Oba was the king of the empire, but he was advised by a council of chiefs who were drawn from various guilds. These guilds, such as the brass casters and ivory carvers, played an essential role in the kingdom's economy and cultural life. The script also explores the Benin Empire's trade relations with Europeans, which led to the introduction of firearms and eventually contributed to the downfall of the kingdom in the late 19th century.
The artistic heritage of the Benin Empire, which is best exemplified by the Benin Bronze. These bronze sculptures, which were created using the lost-wax casting technique, depict various aspects of Benin life, including religious rituals, courtly ceremonies, and daily activities. The Benin Bronze is considered one of the finest examples of African art and has been the subject of numerous exhibitions and scholarly studies worldwide.
The Great Wall of Benin, which was one of the most impressive feats of engineering in African history. The wall, which was built during the 14th century, stretched for over 10,000 kilometers and was made up of a combination of ramparts, ditches, and moats. The wall served not only as a formidable defense against invading armies but also as a means of controlling trade and protecting the kingdom's economic interests.
Overall, this video provides a comprehensive overview of the Benin Empire and its legacy. By exploring its achievements in architecture, art, science, and administration, we gain a deeper appreciation for the incredible ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Benin people.

The Benin King was assisted with soldiers and sophisticated weapons (guns) by the Portuguese during the Benin and Idah war in the 16th century. Some residents of Benin City could still speak a pidgin Portuguese in the late 19th century

The Lost City of Atlantis - Hidden in Plain Sight? Lost Ancient Human Civilizations
Not only did the lost city of Atlantis likely exist, but its true location may have been hiding in plain sight for thousands of years, completely unnoticed, as we’ve been looking in all the wrong places...Since everyone assumes that it must be under the ocean somewhere, such as in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean or the Mediterranean Sea, which have long been considered to be the most likely places for its existence.
And no, I am not about to suggest that Antarctica is the hidden location of Atlantis, either.
Because in this video, I am going to connect the dots on the exact words that Plato used to describe Atlantis, its location, and the geographical land features that surround it, which were recorded in Plato’s dialogues, the Critias and Timaeus.
And the details that Plato shared of At...

#Cheetah leopard #shorts videos beautiful animals
This article is about an animal. For cheetah (disambiguation), see Cheetah (disambiguation) .
The cheetah ( Acinonyx jubatus ), which comes in the cat family ( Vidal ), is known for its amazing agility and speed. It is the only living member of the genus Acinonyx , which is recognized by the variation in the appearance of its claws. For this reason, it is the only wild species whose claws are not closed and due to which its grip remains weak (so it cannot climb trees, although due to its agility, it goes into low twigs). It is the fastest land animal, reaching speeds of up to 120 km/h [3] [4] in a short jump and reaching 460 m/s. It can cover a distance of up to three seconds and within just three seconds it can increase its speed to 103 kmph, which is mostFaster than the speed of a superc...

▪︎ Children of Israel broke that agreement and began to take on the Customs of the Gentiles including Idol worship / having other gods before Him / Becoming idols amongst themselves
▪︎ The Most High removed the Children of Israel from the Land He promised their fathers (Abraham 🔸️ Isaac 🔸️Jacob / Israel) to the Slave Coast in Negroland

Not only did the lost city of Atlantis likely exist, but its true location may have been hiding in plain sight for thousands of years, completely unnoticed, as we’ve been looking in all the wrong places...Since everyone assumes that it must be under the ocean somewhere, such as in the depths of the
Atlantic Ocean or the Mediterranean Sea, which have long been considered to be the most likely places for its existence.
And the details that Plato shared of Atlantis, which I’m about to share with you in side by side comparison, will show you that the Richat Structure located in Mauritania Africa, also commonly referred to as the Eye of the Sahara, or the Eye of Africa…is the most likely location for the lost city of Atlantis.

It can cover a distance of up to three seconds and within just three seconds it can increase its speed to 103 kmph, which is mostFaster than the speed of a supercar . [5] Recent studies have proved that the cheetah is the fastest animal to live on earth. [6]
The word cheetah is derived from the Sanskrit word chitrakayah , which has come through the Hindi cheetah and which means multicolored body . [7]
Genetics and Classification Edit
The species of cheetah is called acinonyx in Greek , which means non-rotating claw , while in Latin its species is called jubatus , which means mane , which was probably due to the hair found in the neck of the cubs. Ho.

Cheetahs have unusually low genetic variation, due to which very few spermatozoa are found in the semen which are less motile as they are prone to deformed flagellum ( tail ) due to genetic weakness . [8] This can be understood as the fact that when skin transplantation is performed between two unrelated cheetahs, there is no rejection of the donor's skin to the donor. It is thought that this is because inbreeding continued for a longer period due to genetic barriers during the last Ice Age . The Miocene in Africa probably before the cheetah migrated to Asia .(2.6 million-75 million years ago) evolved in the period. Recently a team led by Warren Johnson and Stephen Aubren conducted a new study at the National Cancer Institute in the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity ( Frederick , Maryland , United States ) and found all extant species as 11 million years old living in Asia. previous common ancestor of cheetahs, which may have led to the modification and refinement of existing ideas about cheetah evolution. Extinct species now include: Acinonyx pardinensis (Pliocene ) period, which is much larger than the modern cheetah and is found in Europe , India and China ; acinonyx intermedius , (middle of the Pleistocene period), was found at the same distance. The extinct genus Miracinonyx was a cheetah-like animal, but recent DNA analysis has certified that Mirasinonyx inexpectatus , Mirasinonyx studeri and Miracinonyx trumani , (early late Pleistocene period) were found in North America and referred to as "North America". American cheetah" but they were not real cheetahs, but rather closely related to the cougar.

Although many sources list six or more species of cheetah, the taxonomic status of most species remains unresolved. Acinonyx rex —the king cheetah (see below)—was abandoned after it was discovered as the only recessive gene. The woolly cheetah of the species Acinonyx jubatus gutatus may also have been altered due to recessive genes . Some of the most recognized species include: [9]

Afghanistan , India , Iran , Iraq , Israel , Jordan , Oman , Pakistan , Saudi Arabia , Syria , Russia )
Northwest African Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus heck) : Northwest Africa (
