Since its recognition as a distinctive region in the late 19th century, Appalachia has been a source of enduring myths and distortions regarding the isolation, temperament, and behavior of its inhabitants. Early 20th century writers often engaged in yellow journalism focused on sensationalistic aspects of the region's culture, such as moonshining and clan feuding, and often portrayed the region's inhabitants as uneducated and prone to impulsive acts of violence. Sociological studies in the 1960s and 1970s helped to re-examine and dispel these stereotypes.
From the Turonian age of the Late Cretaceous to the very beginning of the Paleocene, Appalachia was separated from the rest of North America. Because of this, its fauna was isolated, and developed very differently from the tyrannosaur, ceratopsian and ankylosaur dominated fauna of the western part of North America, the geologist's "Laramidia". Due to numerous undiscovered fossiliferous deposits and due the fact that half of Appalachia's fossil formations being destroyed by the Pleistocene ice age, little is known about Appalachia, with exception of plant life. In addition, due to a lack of interest in Appalachia, many fossils that have been found in Appalachia lie unstudied and remain in the inaccurate genera to which they were assigned in the days of E.D. Cope and O.C. Marsh. Many of the various fossil formations not destroyed by the Pleistocene ice age still remain elusive to the field of paleontological study. However, some fossil sites, such as Ellisdale in New Jersey and the Demopolis Chalk Formation in Alabama, have given us a glimpse into this forgotten world of paleontology.

Deep in the hills of Appalachia is a land of beauty laced with heavy dr*g abuse. In some of these communities up to 50% of the 20-40 year olds are addicted to hard dr*gs creating a generation of children being raised by grandparents. Join me and the locals as we travel into the hills of Eastern Kentucky to show you the gravity of this situation, and also introduce you to the people who are creating positive ways out.

Inside Appalachia - First Impressions 🇺🇸
Deep in the mountains of West Virginia, is a world most of us know nothing about. It's a place that's had a huge part in building the country off of the backs of coal miners. Economic decline has hit the region hard, but what remains is a sliver of hope, pride, and some of the most authentic and friendly people in the country.

Appalachian Trail 2023: Day 135 - Bennington, VT to Kid Gore Shelter
AT Day 135: Bennington, VT to Kid Gore Shelter. We got out of the room early this morning. It turns out that our friends Jeff, Hi-Def, and Buzzsaw were staying at the hotel as well. We walked across town to the camping area for Trailfest for the advertised free breakfast. The free breakfast was not what we expected at all! We were able to choose anything we wanted off the menu at the famed Blue Benn diner! It was an absolutely delicious breakfast (one of the best on trail), and we are so grateful for the diner and the town of Bennington being so generous to hikers! After breakfast, we got a ride back to trail with Steve, another Trailfest volunteer. It was a slow burn climb up the mountain, but it wasn’t as muddy as I’d expected given the rain yesterday. We officially entered the Green Mou...

Who are the Appalachians?
Just who are the people of Appalachia? The Appalachians are one of the most negatively perceived groups in the United States; oftentimes being portrayed as backwards, uncivilized and prejudiced, however their history and culture is inextricably tied to that of the entire continent and is often misunderstood.
The Appalachians are unlike any other regionally-based cultural group in the US, and hopefully this video gives you insight as to why. Thanks for watching!

We officially entered the Green Mountains and enjoyed beautiful views, vast mud pits, and a sketchy river fording where I had to change into my camp shoes. The forest was beautiful, culminating in a mossy pine forest atop Glastenbury where an old fire tower cast its shadow over the clearing below. Our descent to camp was rocky, but nothing we couldn’t handle. We squeezed into the small campsite just past the shelter and ate dinner. I slept well, but the night was cold.

Things look cold for young John Morgan We were dying all around him Wise, the wise, our young John Morgan sing Will we feed us all away? We?re all heroes We got giant steps behind us Just twelve years old, just trying to be a boy There?s not much time, just time to say, goodbye then Take me away, I don?t need to be here too Will we feed us all away? We?re all heroes We got giant steps behind us Do you see giant steps behind me? Our falling days won?t end this way Our falling days won?t end this way (Something?s wrong but I can?t see it) Our falling days won?t end this way (Something?s wrong but I can?t see it) Our falling days won?t end this way (Something?s wrong but I can?t see it) But that was a long time ago Yeah, that was a long time ago That was a long time ago Where we'd be when young John Morgan?s south Will the sky come falling down on us? Wipe out time, have we forgotten you? Will we feed us all away? We're all heroes We got giant steps behind us
