How The US Map Has Changed In 200 Years
It didn't take long for the US to begin expanding westward after winning independence from British rule. By the mid-1800s, the country had pushed its territorial bounds across North America to the Pacific Ocean, and began dividing up territory into its present-day 50 states.

"Hello and welcome to our channel! Today, we're diving into a fascinating piece of North American history: how Canada and the United States became separate nations. Stay tuned to uncover the story of borders, battles, and treaties that shaped the continent."
"To understand how Canada and the USA became distinct countries, we need to travel back to the early colonial days. In the 1600s and 1700s, North America was a battleground for European powers. The French and the British established colonies, with the French dominating the northern territories and the British settling along the Atlantic coast.
The British and French rivalry in North America led to a series of conflicts, most notably the Seven Years' War, which North Americans refer to as the French and Indian War. By 1763, the British ...

We’re 5
Unincorporated US Territories
Our fundamental rights apply as a matter of law we do agree
5 Unincorporated US Territories
but other constitutional rights are not available to us you see
The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico
That’s who I am
You find me in the Caribbean Sea
An archipelago I do span
I was named a US Territory in 1898
After the Spanish-American War
The US claimed me isn’t that great
San Juan is the name of my beautiful capital
It’s located in my north where the star you see appeared you know
Hurricane Maria hit me in 2017
Causing the largest power outage in all of US history
I’m the Virgin Islands of the United States
Next door to Puerto Rico in the
The Caribbean Sea my weathers great
I was purchased by the US in the year 1917
From the Danish and became Unincorporated US Territory
My 3 main islands are Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas
My capital’s Charlotte Amalie
You’ve learned this without a fuss
Let’s say this together my name is Guam
I’m located in the Western Pacific Ocean ok let’s move on
I became an Unincorporated US Territory
In 1898
After the Spanish-American War did cease
Hagåtña is my capital
As the star shows you here
Located in my midwestern part
Sing the chorus clear
We’re 5
Unincorporated US Territories
Our fundamental rights apply as a matter of law we do agree
5 Unincorporated US Territories
but other constitutional rights are not available to us you see
The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
That’s my name in the Northwestern
The Pacific Ocean where you could get a tan
The most southern island Guam is a part of this island chain
But became a separate US territory
Way before I was claimed
Capitol Hill, Saipan is my official government seat
It takes 20 hours from the west coast US
On a plane to me
I’m American Samoa
in the South Pacific Ocean
I’m a US Territory still waiting for my state promotion
American Samoa was founded in
1889
The native people are called Samoans
Visit if you find the time
Pago Pago is my territorial capital
Someday we’ll teach you about the Minor Outlying Islands you know

The Hidden Territories of the United States! 🇺🇸 Did you know that the United States is made up of more than just the 50 states we all know? When we think of the U.S., most of us imagine the continental landmass, with
Alaska and Hawaii as distant outliers. But there's so much more to explore! Unveil the lesser-known parts of the U.S. - its 16 territories scattered far and wide 🗺️ mostly in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. While 11 of these territories are uninhabited islands and reefs 🏝️ the other five are home to around 4 million people. Meet Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 Guam 🇬🇺 the U.S. Virgin Islands 🇻🇮 the Northern Mariana Islands 🇲🇵 and American Samoa 🇦🇸 - vibrant places with unique cultures and histories. But here's the kicker: not everyone in these territories is a U.S. citizen. For instance, the residents of American Samoa are classified as ""U.S. nationals,"" 😳 There are fascinating ways these territories became part of the U.S. - through purchases💰treaties, and even annexation.

By 1763, the British emerged victorious, and France ceded much of its North American territories to Britain under the Treaty of Paris."
"Fast forward to the 1770s, and tensions were rising in the British colonies along the Atlantic coast. The American colonies sought independence from British rule, leading to the American Revolution. The conflict, which lasted from 1775 to 1783, resulted in the formation of the United States of America.
The Treaty of Paris in 1783 recognized the independence of the United States, but what about the northern territories that remained loyal to Britain? These territories, which we now know as Canada, became a refuge for Loyalists who fled the newly formed USA."
"After the American Revolution, Britain reorganized its remaining North American territories. The Constitutional Act of 1791 split the province of Quebec into Upper Canada (modern-day Ontario) and Lower Canada (modern-day Quebec). This division aimed to accommodate the influx of Loyalist settlers and to better manage the distinct English and French-speaking populations."
: "Despite the clear separation of British and American territories, tensions simmered between the two neighbors. The War of 1812 was a significant conflict that pitted the USA against British forces, including Canadian militias. The war, fought from 1812 to 1815, saw numerous battles across the border regions but ultimately ended in a stalemate with the Treaty of Ghent.
The war solidified the sense of Canadian identity and distinction from the United States. It also reinforced the borders that would become the foundation of Canada as a separate entity."
"As the 19th century progressed, the British North American colonies sought greater unity and self-governance. The push for confederation gained momentum, leading to key conferences and discussions among colonial leaders.
In 1867, the British North America Act was passed, uniting the colonies of Canada (Ontario and Quebec), New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia into the Dominion of Canada. This act marked the birth of Canada as a self-governing entity within the British Empire, distinct from the United States
: "Following confederation, Canada continued to grow, incorporating other British colonies and territories. Manitoba joined in 1870, followed by British Columbia in 1871, and Prince Edward Island in 1873. The expansion continued westward and northward, with the establishment of new provinces and territories.
Throughout this process, the Canadian government negotiated treaties with Indigenous peoples, who had long inhabited these lands. These treaties, while controversial and often inequitable, were part of the broader nation-building effort
"Canada's journey to full autonomy was gradual. The Statute of Westminster in 1931 granted legislative independence from Britain, but it wasn't until 1982, with the patriation of the Constitution, that Canada achieved full sovereignty. The Canada Act, passed by the UK Parliament, ended the power of British lawmakers to legislate for Canada, symbolizing complete legislative independence.
Canada's participation in global conflicts like World War I and World War II also fostered a strong sense of national identity, distinct from the United States and the British Empire."
"Today, Canada and the United States share one of the longest undefended borders in the world, with a relationship defined by mutual respect, trade, and cultural exchange. While their paths diverged significantly in the 18th and 19th centuries, both nations have carved out unique identities and roles on the global stage.
