Elgar's "The Crown of India" was composed between January-February of 1912, commissioned as a masque of music and dance, to be held at the Coliseum in London in celebration of the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Delhi, and their crowning as Emperor and Empress of India. Due to the lack of time, Elgar had tu use a lot of fragments and sketches that were written much before, but the piece was a triumphal success in its premiere in February 26 of that year.
However, it soon fell into oblivion to the point of the orchestral arrangements being destroyed in the seventhies, only leaving a complete piano-vocal score. In 2007 the Elgar Society commissioned Anthony Payne to reorchestrate the work, which he did using as guides derivated pieces still conserved, like the standalone orchestral suite and march. The text was written by Henry Hamilton, who essentially invented an argument between the Cities of Calcutta and Delhi (each represented by an actress) as they made their case to India (a third actress) as to which should be the new capital of gem of the British colonies.
The work opens opens with a portentous introduction, as Elgar takes us by the hand into the empire of the British imagination. In the next part, a lyrically calm ambient is introduced, representing a native crowd with snake charmers and a musician. The music then fades into the silence. The second movement begins with the Nautch girls (dancers from the north of India) performing a kathak dance, represented by its intricacies in an almost pointillistic sequence of musical gestures suggestive of the perceived eroticism of the dancing girl’s hand, head and eye movements. A change of pace brings the dance to a vigorous conclusion, and as they leave, the dancers "salaam to India".
Then, after a rhythmic introduction, India appears as a mother greeting her daughters, hails her cities from holy Benares to Agra. The memory of British heroes of India and "John Company" is invoked, the reference to "The Campbells Are Coming" recalling Sir Colin Campbell under whose command Lucknow was relieved during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. With the following song, Agra replies, singing of the mystery of India, with a theme for the song, which is repeated in later sections of the masque. Then India speaks of two empty seats and the discord evident by the absence of Calcutta and Delhi.
Trumpets herald Calcutta’s impatient entrance, followed by a pompous march. India welcomes Calcutta but chides her for arriving late even though, as Calcutta points out, Delhi has yet to appear. Suddenly, more trumpets announce the stately arrival of Delhi. A squabble develops between the two great cities but it is agreed that Delhi shall have the first turn to plead her case to become India’s capital. Delhi calls for the support of four seventeenth-century Mogul Emperors: "Come, oh ye mighty ones from out the Past!"
