Following the defeat of the Axis Powers in North Africa in May 1943, there was disagreement between the Allies as to what the next step should be. The British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, in particular wanted to invade Italy, which in November 1942 he called "the soft underbelly of the axis" (and GeneralMark Clark, in contrast, later called "one tough gut"). Popular support in Italy for the war was declining, and he believed an invasion would remove Italy, and thus the influence of Axis forces in the Mediterranean Sea, opening it to Allied traffic. This would reduce the amount of shipping capacity needed to supply Allied forces in the Middle East and Far East at a time when the disposal of Allied shipping capacity was in crisis and increase British and American supplies to the Soviet Union. In addition, it would tie down German forces. Joseph Stalin, the Soviet leader, had been pressing Churchill and Roosevelt to open a "second front" in Europe, which would lessen the German Army's focus on the Eastern Front, where the bulk of its forces were fighting in the largest armed conflict in history.
Operation Avalanche was a four-week U.S.-led offensive in December 2003 designed to disrupt a resurgence in militant activity in the southeastern territory of Afghanistan and to establish conditions for the provision of humanitarian aid. Described by the U.S. government as the biggest ground operation in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban in late 2001, the offensive led to the capture of more than 100 suspects and the deaths of 10. Two soldiers from the Afghan National Army were killed. The operation was marred by the accidental killings of 15 children in raids on suspected militants.
The operation involved 2,000 U.S. soldiers supported by Afghan troops, but failed to engage any Taliban or allied militants.
Patrols were conducted and caves searched over a 40 square mile (100km²) area. Little of note was discovered in the caves.
Operation Avalanche was a major United States investigation of child pornography on the Internet launched in 1999 after the arrest and conviction of Thomas and Janice Reedy, who operated an Internet pornography business called Landslide Productions in Fort Worth, Texas. It was made public in early August 2001 at the end of Operation Avalanche, that 100 arrests were made out of 144 suspects. It was followed by Operation Ore in the United Kingdom, Operation Snowball in Canada, Operation Pecunia in Germany, Operation Amethyst in Ireland and Operation Genesis in Switzerland.
Although US prosecutions were made on the basis of other evidence, later reconstruction of the Landslide site and review of the computer hard drives in the UK identified flaws in the police forensic procedures used and contradicted evidence on the website given at the Reedys' trial. Specifically, investigation of the Landslide data indicated many names listed were victims of credit card fraud, and that there was no link on the Landslide front page to take the user to child pornography sites as stated in sworn trial testimony.
The Story of Sal Guinta & Battle Company in Afghanistan | Operation Rock Avalanche
This week (October 19-25, 2007) marks the anniversary of Operation Rock Avalanche, which was a six-day offensive in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan led by 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.
The events of those days forever changed the lives of those involved and many others, resulting in the loss of three incredible Paratroopers (SSG Larry Rougle, SPC Hugo Mendoza, SGT Joshua Brennan), as well as at least 7 WIA. Following the events, SSG Sal Guinta was awarded the Medal of Honor exactly three years later, making him the first living recipient of the Medal since the Vietnam War.
This video details SSG Guinta's story and experience during the operation, as well as the events leading up to him receiving the Medal of Honor. There are many int...

Worst Ambush of the Afghanistan War
The True Story of how US Army Sgt. Giunta of the 173rd Airborne Infantry fought to survive one of the worst close ambushes in the Afghanistan War. He was the first living Medal of Honor recipient since the Vietnam War. His act of Bravery and Valor helped save many of his buddies lives that day during Rock Avalanche in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan.
These are the soldiers you might remember from Restrepo. He did a text book react to near ambush battle drill against the enemy.

Avalanches claim up to a hundred lives in Afghanistan
More than 90 people have been killed in northern Afghanistan in the worst avalanches for over 30 years.
With heavy snow forecast to last for another two days officials are warning of a humanitarian crisis.
Many homes have been destroyed in the Panjshir valley region and it is thought many victims may still be buried.
"Three children and one adult are still under the snow here", said Abdul Wali Afgha from the village of Malapsa. "The government has only rescued two people, and three hundre…

There are many interviews detailing this, all worth watching in my opinion. Also, check out the films, "Restrepo" and "Korengal" for an even deeper look into Operation Rock Avalanche and the 173rd's deployment to the Korengal.
