The following is a list of ongoing armed conflicts that are taking place around the world and continue to result in violence.
List guidelines
This list of ongoing armed conflicts is for the sole purpose of identifying present-day conflicts and the death toll associated with each conflict. The guidelines of inclusion are:
Armed conflicts consist in the use of armed force between two or more organized armed groups, governmental or non-governmental alike. Interstate, intrastate and non-state armed conflicts are listed. For ongoing civil unrest and violence against protesters not escalating into armed conflict, see List of ongoing protests.
Fatality figures include battle-related deaths (military and civilian) as well as civilians intentionally targeted by the parties to an armed conflict. Only direct deaths resulting from violence are included for the current and past year; excess deaths indirectly resulting from famine, disease and disruption of services are included along with violent deaths only in the cumulative fatalities count, when available.

Ten Ongoing Conflicts You've (Probably) Never Heard Of
Every year thousands of people die in violent conflicts around the world and billions of dollars are spent by governments to fight in these conflicts. It is the role of the state to ensure the security of its citizens, which includes protection from threats from both inside and outside state (national) boundaries. You have probably heard about wars being fought in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan in recent years, but many other countries are also in various states of violent conflict. The present conflict in Ukraine started in 2014. Today, there are 100,000 fighters stationed in the country, making it one of the most heavily militarized regions in the world. In Ukraine's east, Ukrainian forces are engaged in a struggle with Russian-backed separatists.
A ceasefire was called in 2015, with a security zone established that was meant to foster peace. However, today the security zone remains one of the most violent places in the Ukraine. With over 10,000 deaths to date, and over 1.5 million civilians displaced, the cost of ignoring the ceasefire continues to mount by the day. And both sides are still building up their forces.
To truly understand the international conflicts and trends shaping our world you need a big-picture view. Video journalist Sam Ellis uses maps to tell these stories and chart their effects on foreign policy.

There are lots of wars going on in the world.
Many people die every minute. Too many.
We didn't learn from the past conflicts.
We never seem to.
When will we ever learn?
The ceasefire is completely ignored.
Correction: In a previous version, the Russian Empire at 2:31 did not include Finland and northern Kazakhstan and at 2:34 the map mistakenly depicted the Warsaw Pact members, not the Soviet Union.
At 2:03 the Minsk II agreement refers to the separatist enclaves as "certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine" not the DPR and LPR.

Global Conflict Analysis presents a list of ten of these lesser-known wars.
