The settlement of Obdorsk (Обдорск) was founded in 1595, in the place of a Khanty settlement called Polnovat-Vozh (Полноват-вож), by Russian settlers after the conquest of Siberia. It was situated on the Ob River, and its name supposedly derives from that. The land around Obdorsk was referred to as Obdorsky krai, or Obdoriya.
The town was often used as a place of exile during the Tsarist and Soviet periods. Among notable people who spent time here was the Doukhobor spiritual leader Pyotr Verigin. The town and nearby area contained three Soviet camps where approximately 6,500 prisoners were held, arrested for their belief in God. At the port of Salekhard, approximately 1,500 prisoners loaded and unloaded goods at the dock, or mined metal ores. About 5,000 prisoners in two camps near Salekhard were assigned to polish diamonds mined from Mirny.
The Arctic regions of Russia are commonly referred to as the "Far North". It consists of a large part of Russia, located mainly north of the Arctic Circle, which boasts enormous mineral and natural resources.

The Far North is known for its extremely harsh climate. That is exactly why anyone who work there, other than indigenous populations who live far from Russian civilisation, receive an extra grade of payment, commonly referred to as the "Northern Bonus" (северные надбавки).
People in Arctic Russia also often receive additional benefits such as extra vacation, extra disability benefits, extra retirement benefits (a lower retirement age), and housing benefits, in compensation for the difficult working conditions. These compensation schemes began under the Soviet Union and has been maintained by the Russian Federation.
In my quest to set foot in every single federal subject in Russia, the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug was definitely one of them! Don't forget to follow me on Instagram for live updates @davelegenda 📷

Getting there by land from Moscow was quite a feat, traveling by train through fascinating places such as Kirov, Ukhta, and Vorkuta. Salekhard is located in the Ob river valley and is an important river port of the Russian Far North.
In my previous video I travelled along the only section of the unfinished Salekhard–Igarka Railway that is still operating nowadays. Originally, the Salekhard-Igarka Railway was set to provide a rail connection between the Ob river port of Salekhard and the Yenisei river port of Igarka.
Currently, the nearest railway is at Labytnangi, on the opposite side of the river Ob. At these latitudes, there are no bridges on the river: for 9–10 months each year, the river is frozen and cars and trucks can cross via the river ice. In the summer a ferry operates, but in the in-between seasons, when the ice is drifting - generally shortly before the start and shortly after the end of summer, Salekhard is effectively isolated from the outside world. During these periods, only helicopters are able to reach Salekhard in case of emergency.

Open University has launched a new course, “Map of Russia”, which is dedicated to the cultural and social life of the country outside its larger metropolitan areas.
Although the age of empires has passed, today's Russia remains captive to the power of sovereign illusions, largely ignoring its vast federal potential. Regions are treated as mere resource bowels, or at best, as suppliers of personnel for the several cities, headed by Moscow, with a population of over a million.
Our aim is to reveal a different Russia, from the North-West to the Far East, a Russia that is better known by its inhabitants, mentioned on social media and only occasionally discussed by state news sources.
We want to give a new context to Russia’s communities, replacing the usual economic perspective with one that highlights the distinctive socio-cultural frameworks of each region.
We will introduce people who did not to migrate from their place of birth and who are not ambivalent to the future of their community. These people exist in Russia, which means there are regional identities.
The course is united by the overarching theme of civil society. We are interested in initiatives that are instigated by local communities, and not “handed down” from above. Therefore, we try to limit our discussion of projects under official state patronage.
Civil society in non-metropolitan Russia — it is the cultural projects, non-profit partnerships, human rights and charitable structures, private initiatives that affect the environment as well as social entrepreneurship. The type of activity that transforms a population into a society.
