Beautiful Moments in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard
Beautiful moments at the AWIPEV station, taken in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago to the east of Greenland in the Arctic Ocean, is home to one of the northernmost settlements in the world: Ny-Ålesund. The town itself is essentially the “largest laboratory for modern Arctic research” – consisting of labs and stations operated by eleven countries, it brings together researchers from across the globe, and from different polar research disciplines. Scientists from France and Germany work together at a joint facility in Ny-Ålesund: AWIPEV Base.

The Northernmost Town in the World: Ny-Ålesund - SPITSBERGEN/SVALBARD
Ny-Ålesund is a research town on the island of Spitsbergen in Svalbard (Norway). It is the northernmost inhabited place on Earth with an around the year population of only 30-35.
Getting in as a traveler is tricky as you need permission to do so from the town itself. My friend William (Electrician of the town) invited me to come see him there and he is the one who showed me around and took me out of town on a cabin trip I will never forget. Nature around the town is unique, impressive and very inspiring. I could not keep my camera off for more than 5 minutes and captured many hundreds of shots that I edited into this video!

Ny-Ålesund is one of only four human communities on Spitzberg, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago. For decades, the scientists who call it home have been industriously measuring changes in features ranging from glaciers to phytoplankton. “Nowadays, we see the Arctic as the watchman of climate change”, says glaciologist Florian Tolle. “It’s where you’ll find the most visible repercussions.” Average temperatures in Ny-Alesund have risen by 1.7°C since records began, twice as much as the rest of the globe. Daily temperatures fluctuate wildly, mudslides and floods have become more frequent, and even avalanches regularly threaten the researchers. Yet despite these very visible effects, a hefty paradox remains: the town’s energy requirements are met by a charcoal-burning power station built in the 1980s. “It was an efficient way to produce power”, says Arild Olsen, former miner and then mayor of mining town Longyearbyen. “At that time, we weren’t concerned by climate change.” They plan to switch to renewable energy soon, and hope the rest of the world will follow suit. “I just hope we’ll be fast enough”, says Tolle.

GEAR USED:
Cameras: Sony A7S ; Canon EOS 70 D ; GoPro Hero 4 Silver
Lenses: Canon EFS 10-18mm AF + Stabilizer ; Rokinon 1.4/24mm
Tripods: JOBY Gorilla Tripod ; Hama Star 63
Other: Hähnel Giga T Pro II ; ZOOM H1 200M
MUSIC:
Relaxing - Bensound
Iris Roth & Geir Mathiassen
Porches and Universes - Puddle of Infinity
SPECIAL THANKS TO:
William Holberg Engesland
Kings Bay AS Ny-Ålesund
