The North Tower (also known as Tower 1, Building One, or 1 WTC) was one of the twin towers of the original World Trade Center in New York City. It was completed in 1972, standing at a height of 417 metres (1,368ft), and was the tallest building in the world until being surpassed by the Sears Tower in Chicago in 1973. It was distinguishable from its twin, the South Tower, by the 110.3-metre (362ft)telecommunications antenna on its roof. Including the antenna, the building stood at a total height of 527.3 metres (1,730ft). The building's address was 1 World Trade Center, with the WTC complex having its own ZIP code of 10048.
The North Tower and its twin were both destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001; the North Tower was the first of the towers to be struck by a hijacked aircraft, at 8:46 a.m EDT, and it collapsed at 10:28a.m. Of the 2,977 victims killed in the attacks, 1,402 were in or above the North Tower impact zone. The North Tower was replaced by the present-day One World Trade Center tower, which was opened in November 2014 as the lead building of the redeveloped World Trade Center site.
The building was designed and built by Leach, Rhodes & Walker (now Leach Rhodes Walker) for the Inland Revenue, and was completed in 1966. This was not LRW's only work for the Inland Revenue; they also constructed Aldine House in 1967, as well as Trinity Bridge House in 1998.
The tower was built using the (then) innovative technique of using a continuously climbing shutter to cast a central core; pre-fabricated cladding was then lifted into place using a tower crane. This technique led to rapid construction, avoided the need for scaffolding, and allowed the lower floors to be occupied while building continued higher up. The combination was very cost-effective, but was not flawless; on a windy night the windows of the building blew off, ending up in Salford Bus Station.
The North Tower is the unofficial name for one of the lighthouses on the Dutch island Schiermonnikoog, one of the Frisian Islands, on the edge of the North Sea; the other is the South Tower. It was built by H.G. Jansen & A. van Rhyn, and was activated in 1854. From the tower, weather reports are issued for the coastal waters. In 1998 it was painted red.
