Norfolk, Virginia
Norfolk (/ˈnɔːrfᵿk/ NOR-fək, local /ˈnɒfʊk/ NOF-uuk) is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States of America. At the 2010 census, the population was 242,803; in 2013, the population was estimated to be 246,392 making it the second-most populous city in Virginia, behind neighboring Virginia Beach.
Norfolk is located at the core of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, named for the large natural harbor of the same name located at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. It is one of nine cities and seven counties that constitute the Hampton Roads metro area, officially known as the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC MSA. The city is bordered to the west by the Elizabeth River and to the north by the Chesapeake Bay. It also shares land borders with the independent cities of Chesapeake to its south and Virginia Beach to its east. One of the oldest of the cities in Hampton Roads, Norfolk is considered to be the historic, urban, financial, and cultural center of the region.

Norfolk
Norfolk /ˈnɔːrfək/ is a county in East Anglia. It borders Lincolnshire to the west and north-west, Cambridgeshire to the west and southwest, and Suffolk to the south. Its northern and eastern boundaries are the North Sea and, to the north-west, The Wash. The county town is Norwich.
With an area of 2,074 square miles and a population of 859,400, Norfolk is a largely rural county with a population density of 401 per square mile. Forty per cent of the county's population live in four major built up areas: Norwich (213,000), Great Yarmouth (63,000), King's Lynn (46,000) and Thetford (25,000).
The Broads is a network of rivers and lakes on the county's east coast, extending south into Suffolk. The area is a National Park and is protected by the Broads Authority.
History
Norfolk was settled in pre-Roman times, with camps along the higher land in the west where flints could be quarried. A Brythonic tribe, the Iceni, inhabited the county from the 1st century BC to the end of the 1st century AD. The Iceni revolted against the Roman invasion in 47 AD, and again in 60 AD led by Boudica. The crushing of the second rebellion opened the county to the Romans. During the Roman era in Norfolk roads and ports were constructed throughout the county and farming took place widely.

Norfolk station (Amtrak)
The Norfolk Amtrak station is located at 280 Park Avenue in downtown Norfolk, Virginia. It is the terminus of a branch of the Northeast Regional service which begins in Boston. Service began on December 12, 2012. This station returned intercity passenger rail service to Norfolk proper for the first time since 1977 when the Mountaineer ended.
The $3.75 million brick and glass depot, financed by the city, opened on December 2, 2013. It was designed by architects and engineers with the Michael Baker Corporation and includes a soaring three story tower. Prior to the depot's completion, passengers only used the concrete platform.
The station is adjacent to the Harbor Park baseball stadium along the Elizabeth River on the eastern edge of downtown. The Tide light rail system has an adjacent station at Harbor Park, allowing for connections from Amtrak to the light rail service.

Haldimand—Norfolk is a provincial electoral district in southwestern Ontario, Canada. It was created for the 2007 provincial election. 88.0% of the riding came from Haldimand—Norfolk—Brant while 12.0% came from Erie—Lincoln.
The riding includes all of the counties of Haldimand and Norfolk except those parts of Haldimand found in the Six Nations and New Credit Indian Reserves.
The riding also existed from 1934 to 1987.

It was a partly cloudy autumn day with highs in the mid 60s, and as we crossed over the Chesapeake, the clouds were increasing. The day was Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 3 pm. For this video, I took I-264 north into the city of Norfolk Virginia to explore one of our nation’s oldest communities. It was a partly cloudy autumn day with highs in the mid 60s, and as we crossed over the Chesapeake, the clouds were increasing. The day was Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 3 pm.
One this trio, we’re going to begin in one of Norfolk’s nicer communities, on the northwest side of town. Then, we’re going to drive into downtown Norfolk, and then wind up in the worst part of Norfolk. The goal is to give you some perspective on the good and bad areas of town, all in one nearly continuous shot - so you can see how the city is laid out.
We’ll begin up here in the Ghent neighborhood, and drive towards downtown. The Ghent neighborhood here is part of the city’s historic district. Homes here run anywhere from $250,000 to $600,000. This is kind of an arts community, and they hold festivals here throughout the year. Much of this neighborhood was laid out in the 1920s, and has remained mostly in tact ever since. In the 70s and 80s, parts of this neighborhood fell into disrepair. But much effort has been made to restore this community, and now, it’s considered one of the coolest neighborhoods in all of Hampton Roads. Here’s the rest of one of Norfolk’s finest neighborhoods, as we make our way towards downtown.
Now, we’re getting closer to downtown. Norfolk in a very old city, founded in 1682. That’s a long time ago.
In the 1970s, the population here in Norfolk reached more than 300,000 people. However, over the last 40 years, it’s gone down tremendously. Now, the population is 240,000 people, which is a 17% decline. It is still the third most populous city in the state of Virginia. Norfolk is part of the Hampton Roads region of the state, and it sits in a natural harbor at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. It’s widely considered the historic, urban, financial, and cultural center of the region.
The city has a long history as a strategic military and transportation point. The largest naval base in the world, Naval Station Norfolk, is located in Norfolk along with one of NATO's two Strategic Command headquarters.
Back in the day, Norfolk was major shipping port for British ships, and saw many battles during both the American Revolution and the Civil War.
Today, the population here has stabilized after a middle class white flight which happened in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Most of the families who left wanted newer and nicer homes and more diverse shopping and dining options. The city spent a great deal of effort to renovate rundown and antiquated warehouses and piers, which has helped renew SOME interest in the downtown area.
Hampton Roads is a major military center, particularly for the United States Navy. The naval station here is the headquarters of the United States Fleet Forces Command, which compromises over 62,000 active duty personnel, 75 ships, and 132 aircraft. The base also serves as the headquarters to NATO's Allied Command Transformation.This is also a very important region for shipping.
However, being so close to the Chesapeake means Norfolk has been battling the early signs of rising seawater. In addition, it can be hard to attract modern workers so a city that’s not new and innovative. This community can only rely on military personnel for so much.
Now, we’re going to head north of downtown into one of the worst neighborhoods in Norfolk, an area called Olde Huntersville. This part of town has some of the most rundown and crime ridden parts of Norfolk. It’s about an 8 minute drive from downtown proper. We’ll jump ahead to the action.
Homes in this part of town average about $140,000, which is about half of what an average home costs in the rest of Norfolk. Now, they’re slowly trying to gentrify this part of Norfolk, but it’s been really slow going. The housing stock here has suffered due to struggling economic and social conditions over the years along with the mindset that “narrow” homes like these were less desirable.
This led to the demolition or conversion of properties throughout the neighborhood, resulting in scattered vacant lots with minimal new construction. But the high crime and overall rundown feel has made this part of town a real eyesore.
Okay, so that’s Norfolk. A super old community with a lot of history, and a big military presence. Like many older cities, Norfolk is trying hard to remain modern and relevant, as it attempts to attract a new generation of home owners, workers and businesses.

Norfolk is a town where the water is never far away! It’s a beautiful place to visit with a vibrant arts scene, mouthwatering gastronomy and 144 miles of shore to explore solo, with friends or with the entire family.
One of the best ways to get oriented is to get out on the water. Set sail aboard The American Rover. This three-masted topsail schooner has been a signature site along the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads Harbor since 1986, offering 1 ½ and 2 hour narrated Harbor or Sunset Cruises, from April through October.
Norfolk is divided into distinct neighborhoods each with its own identity. On a map you’ll note the downtown, historic Ghent, Chelsea, North Colley & Beyond, The Military Highway and the airport and finally, Ocean view and East Beach.
It’s not every day, you can step foot on board a decommissioned battleship. In Norfolk, right downtown on the waterfront, say hello to the USS Wisconsin. She saw tours in WWII, Korea and the Gulf War. You can take a guided or self-guided tour. I suggest purchasing a Gold ticket. This gives you access to the battleship and Nauticus. This is the maritime-themed science center and museum.
Chrysler Museum of Art is home to a collection of nearly 30,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of history. The Chrysler Museum of Art possesses one of the great glass collections in America.

Norfolk VA has so much to offer, and you will find that out in this Norfolk VA Travel Vlog. Aside from the Restaurants in Norfolk, and Norfolk VA Eats, there are many Things to do in Norfolk VA, including the Chrysler Museum of Arts, and Glass Studio, Nauticus, and Battleship Wisconsin, Towne Point Park, and The Waterside District or Marketplace, Hermitage Museum and Gardens. The food scene and Restaurants are very diverse, from the Grains Restaurant with all you can eat buffet, to Alkaline, a Ramen noodles Restaurant to a Filipino Restaurant called Lumpia and Company that is located in the nearby Virginia Beach. Norfolk VA has many Things to see and do but given only two days, we were not able to visit the Norfolk Botanical Garden, and the Virginia Zoo. This is enough reason to go back to Norfolk VA in the future.

For this video, I took I-264 north into the city of Norfolk Virginia to explore one of our nation’s oldest communities. It was a partly cloudy autumn day with highs in the mid 60s, and as we crossed over the Chesapeake, the clouds were increasing. The day was Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 3 pm. One this trio, we’re going to begin in one of Norfolk’s nicer communities, on the northwest side of town. Then, we’re going to drive into downtown Norfolk, and then wind up in the worst part of Norfolk. The goal is to give you some perspective on the good and bad areas of town, all in one nearly continuous shot - so you can see how the city is laid out. The pier is an enduring example of Victorian architecture, having withstood many storms, tidal surges and even an attempt to blow it up by the Government in WW2 to prevent the pier being used as a landing strip for enemy invaders!

For this video, I took I-264 north into the city of Norfolk Virginia to explore one of our nation’s oldest communities. It was a partly cloudy autumn day with highs in the mid 60s, and as we crossed over the Chesapeake, the clouds were increasing. The day was Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 3 pm.
One this trio, we’re going to begin in one of Norfolk’s nicer communities, on the northwest side of town. Then, we’re going to drive into downtown Norfolk, and then wind up in the worst part of Norfolk. The goal is to give you some perspective on the good and bad areas of town, all in one nearly continuous shot - so you can see how the city is laid out.
We’ll begin up here in the Ghent neighborhood, and drive towards downtown. The Ghent neighborhood here is part of the city’s historic district. Homes here run anywhere from $250,000 to $600,000. This is kind of an arts community, and they hold festivals here throughout the year. Much of this neighborhood was laid out in the 1920s, and has remained mostly in tact ever since. In the 70s and 80s, parts of this neighborhood fell into disrepair. But much effort has been made to restore this community, and now, it’s considered one of the coolest neighborhoods in all of Hampton Roads. Here’s the rest of one of Norfolk’s finest neighborhoods, as we make our way towards downtown.
Now, we’re getting closer to downtown. Norfolk in a very old city, founded in 1682. That’s a long time ago.
In the 1970s, the population here in Norfolk reached more than 300,000 people. However, over the last 40 years, it’s gone down tremendously. Now, the population is 240,000 people, which is a 17% decline. It is still the third most populous city in the state of Virginia. Norfolk is part of the Hampton Roads region of the state, and it sits in a natural harbor at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. It’s widely considered the historic, urban, financial, and cultural center of the region.
The city has a long history as a strategic military and transportation point. The largest naval base in the world, Naval Station Norfolk, is located in Norfolk along with one of NATO's two Strategic Command headquarters.
Back in the day, Norfolk was major shipping port for British ships, and saw many battles during both the American Revolution and the Civil War.
Today, the population here has stabilized after a middle class white flight which happened in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Most of the families who left wanted newer and nicer homes and more diverse shopping and dining options. The city spent a great deal of effort to renovate rundown and antiquated warehouses and piers, which has helped renew SOME interest in the downtown area.
Hampton Roads is a major military center, particularly for the United States Navy. The naval station here is the headquarters of the United States Fleet Forces Command, which compromises over 62,000 active duty personnel, 75 ships, and 132 aircraft. The base also serves as the headquarters to NATO's Allied Command Transformation.This is also a very important region for shipping.
However, being so close to the Chesapeake means Norfolk has been battling the early signs of rising seawater. In addition, it can be hard to attract modern workers so a city that’s not new and innovative. This community can only rely on military personnel for so much.
Now, we’re going to head north of downtown into one of the worst neighborhoods in Norfolk, an area called Olde Huntersville. This part of town has some of the most rundown and crime ridden parts of Norfolk. It’s about an 8 minute drive from downtown proper. We’ll jump ahead to the action.
Homes in this part of town average about $140,000, which is about half of what an average home costs in the rest of Norfolk. Now, they’re slowly trying to gentrify this part of Norfolk, but it’s been really slow going. The housing stock here has suffered due to struggling economic and social conditions over the years along with the mindset that “narrow” homes like these were less desirable.
This led to the demolition or conversion of properties throughout the neighborhood, resulting in scattered vacant lots with minimal new construction. But the high crime and overall rundown feel has made this part of town a real eyesore.
Okay, so that’s Norfolk. A super old community with a lot of history, and a big military presence. Like many older cities, Norfolk is trying hard to remain modern and relevant, as it attempts to attract a new generation of home owners, workers and businesses.

Norfolk Amtrak Station Opens
. A year ago, the entire region celebrated the return of passenger rail to Hampton Roads. Now, a celebration for the first passenger rail station in Norfolk since 1977. City and State officials celebrated thee opening of the new station, which offers amenities to improve the travel experience. The 3,500 square foot facility new passenger rail station features vaulted ceilings, wide glass windows and a covered platform and includes a spacious waiting area, ticket counter and restrooms.

Amtrak Northeast Regional #94 Full Ride From Norfolk, VA to Washington, D.C. [3-17-21]
Welcome aboard Amtrak Northeast Regional Train #94 the weekday train from Norfolk, VA to Boston South Station. Today we will only be traveling along the section of track between Norfolk and Washington, D.C. Our train today is led by a GE "Genesis" P42DC locomotive. Our stops along our journey will be Petersburg, Richmond-Staples Mill, Ashland, Fredericksburg, Quantico, and Alexandria all of which are in Virginia. Unlike most Amtrak Northeast Regional services, all Amtrak trains (including Regionals) that continue south of Washington use diesel locomotives, since the overhead catenary ends at Washington Union Station. Today we will only be traveling along the section of track between Norfolk and Washington, D.C. Our train today is led by a GE "Genesis" P42DC locomotive. Our stops along our journey will be Petersburg, Richmond-Staples Mill, Ashland, Fredericksburg, Quantico, and Alexandria all of which are in Virginia.
Unlike most Amtrak Northeast Regional services, all Amtrak trains (including Regionals) that continue south of Washington use diesel locomotives, since the overhead catenary ends at Washington Union Station. Amtrak service to Norfolk, VA is a fairly recent addition to its vast route network, with modern Northeast Regional service being added in December 2012. As of November 2021, there are various Northeast Regional trains that originate in Norfolk that terminate in either New York, Boston, or Springfield and vice-versa. All of Amtrak's Northeast Regional services to/from Virginia are unique in the sense that they operate solely over trackage owned by CSX and NS, two of the largest freight railroads in the U.S. Midwest and East Coast. Specifically in this video, most of the route between Washington and Norfolk is owned by CSX, which owns all of the trackage until just South of Petersburg. The CSX lines that Amtrak utilizes from Washington to Petersburg are the RF&P Subdivision (DC-Richmond) and the North End Subdivision (Richmond-Petersburg). Just south of Petersburg, where most Amtrak trains heading to the South continue towards North Carolina, is where Northeast Regional Trains to/from Norfolk either leave or join the CSX North End Subdivision to join or leave the Norfolk District, a railroad line owned by NS that carries both Amtrak and NS traffic into Norfolk.

For this video, I took I-264 north into the city of Norfolk Virginia to explore one of our nation’s oldest communities. It was a partly cloudy autumn day with highs in the mid 60s, and as we crossed over the Chesapeake, the clouds were increasing. The day was Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 3 pm.
One this trio, we’re going to begin in one of Norfolk’s nicer communities, on the northwest side of town. Then, we’re going to drive into downtown Norfolk, and then wind up in the worst part of Norfolk. The goal is to give you some perspective on the good and bad areas of town, all in one nearly continuous shot - so you can see how the city is laid out.
We’ll begin up here in the Ghent neighborhood, and drive towards downtown. The Ghent neighborhood here is part of the city’s historic district. Homes here run anywhere from $250,000 to $600,000. This is kind of an arts community, and they hold festivals here throughout the year. Much of this neighborhood was laid out in the 1920s, and has remained mostly in tact ever since. In the 70s and 80s, parts of this neighborhood fell into disrepair. But much effort has been made to restore this community, and now, it’s considered one of the coolest neighborhoods in all of Hampton Roads. Here’s the rest of one of Norfolk’s finest neighborhoods, as we make our way towards downtown.
Now, we’re getting closer to downtown. Norfolk in a very old city, founded in 1682. That’s a long time ago.
In the 1970s, the population here in Norfolk reached more than 300,000 people. However, over the last 40 years, it’s gone down tremendously. Now, the population is 240,000 people, which is a 17% decline. It is still the third most populous city in the state of Virginia. Norfolk is part of the Hampton Roads region of the state, and it sits in a natural harbor at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. It’s widely considered the historic, urban, financial, and cultural center of the region.
The city has a long history as a strategic military and transportation point. The largest naval base in the world, Naval Station Norfolk, is located in Norfolk along with one of NATO's two Strategic Command headquarters.
Back in the day, Norfolk was major shipping port for British ships, and saw many battles during both the American Revolution and the Civil War.
Today, the population here has stabilized after a middle class white flight which happened in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Most of the families who left wanted newer and nicer homes and more diverse shopping and dining options. The city spent a great deal of effort to renovate rundown and antiquated warehouses and piers, which has helped renew SOME interest in the downtown area.
Hampton Roads is a major military center, particularly for the United States Navy. The naval station here is the headquarters of the United States Fleet Forces Command, which compromises over 62,000 active duty personnel, 75 ships, and 132 aircraft. The base also serves as the headquarters to NATO's Allied Command Transformation.This is also a very important region for shipping.
However, being so close to the Chesapeake means Norfolk has been battling the early signs of rising seawater. In addition, it can be hard to attract modern workers so a city that’s not new and innovative. This community can only rely on military personnel for so much.
Now, we’re going to head north of downtown into one of the worst neighborhoods in Norfolk, an area called Olde Huntersville. This part of town has some of the most rundown and crime ridden parts of Norfolk. It’s about an 8 minute drive from downtown proper. We’ll jump ahead to the action.
Homes in this part of town average about $140,000, which is about half of what an average home costs in the rest of Norfolk. Now, they’re slowly trying to gentrify this part of Norfolk, but it’s been really slow going. The housing stock here has suffered due to struggling economic and social conditions over the years along with the mindset that “narrow” homes like these were less desirable.
This led to the demolition or conversion of properties throughout the neighborhood, resulting in scattered vacant lots with minimal new construction. But the high crime and overall rundown feel has made this part of town a real eyesore.
Okay, so that’s Norfolk. A super old community with a lot of history, and a big military presence. Like many older cities, Norfolk is trying hard to remain modern and relevant, as it attempts to attract a new generation of home owners, workers and businesses.

Norfolk is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. At the 2010 census, the population was 242,803; in 2019, the population was estimated to be 242,742 making it the third-most populous city in Virginia after neighboring Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, and the 91st-largest city in the nation. The city was incorporated in 1705 and is one of the oldest cities in Hampton Roads metropolitan area, and is considered to be the historic, urban, financial, and cultural center of the region.
Norfolk is at the core of the metropolitan area, surrounding the Hampton Roads natural harbor at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. It is one of nine cities and seven counties that constitute the Hampton Roads metro area, officially known as the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC MSA. The city is bordered to the west by the Elizabeth River and to the north by the Chesapeake Bay. Norfolk is a town where the water is never far away! It’s a beautiful place to visit with a vibrant arts scene, mouthwatering gastronomy and 144 miles of shore to explore solo, with friends or with the entire family.
One of the best ways to get oriented is to get out on the water. Set sail aboard The American Rover. This three-masted topsail schooner has been a signature site along the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads Harbor since 1986, offering 1 ½ and 2 hour narrated Harbor or Sunset Cruises, from April through October.
Norfolk is divided into distinct neighborhoods each with its own identity. On a map you’ll note the downtown, historic Ghent, Chelsea, North Colley & Beyond, The Military Highway and the airport and finally, Ocean view and East Beach.
It’s not every day, you can step foot on board a decommissioned battleship. In Norfolk, right downtown on the waterfront, say hello to the USS Wisconsin. She saw tours in WWII, Korea and the Gulf War. You can take a guided or self-guided tour. I suggest purchasing a Gold ticket. This gives you access to the battleship and Nauticus. This is the maritime-themed science center and museum.
Chrysler Museum of Art is home to a collection of nearly 30,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of history. The Chrysler Museum of Art possesses one of the great glass collections in America.

As the city is bordered by multiple bodies of water, Norfolk has many miles of riverfront and bayfront property, including beaches on the Chesapeake Bay. It is linked to its neighbors by an extensive network of interstate highways, bridges, tunnels, and three bridge-tunnel complexes, which are the only bridge-tunnels in the United States.

Norfolk VA has so much to offer, and you will find that out in this Norfolk VA Travel Vlog. Aside from the Restaurants in Norfolk, and Norfolk VA Eats, there are many Things to do in Norfolk VA, including the Chrysler Museum of Arts, and Glass Studio, Nauticus, and Battleship Wisconsin, Towne Point Park, and The Waterside District or Marketplace, Hermitage Museum and Gardens. The food scene and Restaurants are very diverse, from the Grains Restaurant with all you can eat buffet, to Alkaline, a Ramen noodles Restaurant to a Filipino Restaurant called Lumpia and Company that is located in the nearby Virginia Beach. Norfolk VA has many Things to see and do but given only two days, we were not able to visit the Norfolk Botanical Garden, and the Virginia Zoo. This is enough reason to go back to Norfolk VA in the future.

Norfolk is located at the core of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, named for the large natural harbor of the same name located at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. It is one of nine cities and seven counties that constitute the Hampton Roads metro area, officially known as the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC MSA. The city is bordered to the west by the Elizabeth River and to the north by the Chesapeake Bay. It also shares land borders with the independent cities of Chesapeake to its south and Virginia Beach to its east. One of the oldest of the cities in Hampton Roads, Norfolk is considered to be the historic, urban, financial, and cultural center of the region.

For this video, I took I-264 north into the city of Norfolk Virginia to explore one of our nation’s oldest communities. It was a partly cloudy autumn day with highs in the mid 60s, and as we crossed over the Chesapeake, the clouds were increasing. The day was Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 3 pm.
One this trio, we’re going to begin in one of Norfolk’s nicer communities, on the northwest side of town. Then, we’re going to drive into downtown Norfolk, and then wind up in the worst part of Norfolk. The goal is to give you some perspective on the good and bad areas of town, all in one nearly continuous shot - so you can see how the city is laid out.
We’ll begin up here in the Ghent neighborhood, and drive towards downtown. The Ghent neighborhood here is part of the city’s historic district. Homes here run anywhere from $250,000 to $600,000. This is kind of an arts community, and they hold festivals here throughout the year. Much of this neighborhood was laid out in the 1920s, and has remained mostly in tact ever since. In the 70s and 80s, parts of this neighborhood fell into disrepair. But much effort has been made to restore this community, and now, it’s considered one of the coolest neighborhoods in all of Hampton Roads. Here’s the rest of one of Norfolk’s finest neighborhoods, as we make our way towards downtown.
Now, we’re getting closer to downtown. Norfolk in a very old city, founded in 1682. That’s a long time ago.
In the 1970s, the population here in Norfolk reached more than 300,000 people. However, over the last 40 years, it’s gone down tremendously. Now, the population is 240,000 people, which is a 17% decline. It is still the third most populous city in the state of Virginia. Norfolk is part of the Hampton Roads region of the state, and it sits in a natural harbor at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. It’s widely considered the historic, urban, financial, and cultural center of the region.
The city has a long history as a strategic military and transportation point. The largest naval base in the world, Naval Station Norfolk, is located in Norfolk along with one of NATO's two Strategic Command headquarters.
Back in the day, Norfolk was major shipping port for British ships, and saw many battles during both the American Revolution and the Civil War.
Today, the population here has stabilized after a middle class white flight which happened in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Most of the families who left wanted newer and nicer homes and more diverse shopping and dining options. The city spent a great deal of effort to renovate rundown and antiquated warehouses and piers, which has helped renew SOME interest in the downtown area.
Hampton Roads is a major military center, particularly for the United States Navy. The naval station here is the headquarters of the United States Fleet Forces Command, which compromises over 62,000 active duty personnel, 75 ships, and 132 aircraft. The base also serves as the headquarters to NATO's Allied Command Transformation.This is also a very important region for shipping.
However, being so close to the Chesapeake means Norfolk has been battling the early signs of rising seawater. In addition, it can be hard to attract modern workers so a city that’s not new and innovative. This community can only rely on military personnel for so much.
Now, we’re going to head north of downtown into one of the worst neighborhoods in Norfolk, an area called Olde Huntersville. This part of town has some of the most rundown and crime ridden parts of Norfolk. It’s about an 8 minute drive from downtown proper. We’ll jump ahead to the action.
Homes in this part of town average about $140,000, which is about half of what an average home costs in the rest of Norfolk. Now, they’re slowly trying to gentrify this part of Norfolk, but it’s been really slow going. The housing stock here has suffered due to struggling economic and social conditions over the years along with the mindset that “narrow” homes like these were less desirable.
This led to the demolition or conversion of properties throughout the neighborhood, resulting in scattered vacant lots with minimal new construction. But the high crime and overall rundown feel has made this part of town a real eyesore.
Okay, so that’s Norfolk. A super old community with a lot of history, and a big military presence. Like many older cities, Norfolk is trying hard to remain modern and relevant, as it attempts to attract a new generation of home owners, workers and businesses.

Welcome aboard Amtrak Northeast Regional Train #94 the weekday train from Norfolk, VA to Boston South Station. Today we will only be traveling along the section of track between Norfolk and Washington, D.C. Our train today is led by a GE "Genesis" P42DC locomotive. Our stops along our journey will be Petersburg, Richmond-Staples Mill, Ashland, Fredericksburg, Quantico, and Alexandria all of which are in Virginia.
Unlike most Amtrak Northeast Regional services, all Amtrak trains (including Regionals) that continue south of Washington use diesel locomotives, since the overhead catenary ends at Washington Union Station. Amtrak service to Norfolk, VA is a fairly recent addition to its vast route network, with modern Northeast Regional service being added in December 2012. As of November 2021, there are various Northeast Regional trains that originate in Norfolk that terminate in either New York, Boston, or Springfield and vice-versa. All of Amtrak's Northeast Regional services to/from Virginia are unique in the sense that they operate solely over trackage owned by CSX and NS, two of the largest freight railroads in the U.S. Midwest and East Coast. Specifically in this video, most of the route between Washington and Norfolk is owned by CSX, which owns all of the trackage until just South of Petersburg. The CSX lines that Amtrak utilizes from Washington to Petersburg are the RF&P Subdivision (DC-Richmond) and the North End Subdivision (Richmond-Petersburg). Just south of Petersburg, where most Amtrak trains heading to the South continue towards North Carolina, is where Northeast Regional Trains to/from Norfolk either leave or join the CSX North End Subdivision to join or leave the Norfolk District, a railroad line owned by NS that carries both Amtrak and NS traffic into Norfolk.
