Malik Ambar: from Ethiopian Slave to a King in India
Malik Ambar's story is an incredible tale of success against all odds -- of a slave building a new life for himself in a foreign land, and of the Deccan region in India attempting to hold the expansionary Mughal Empire at bay. Mughal Emperors Akbar and Jahangir were obsessed with conquering the Deccan region of India, putting them at odds with Malik Ambar and other Habshis (East Africans in India, primarily slaves, ex-slaves, and free descendants). As de facto King of Ahmadnagar, Malik Ambar successfully navigated the Sultanate through a period of crisis and helped cultivate the might of the Marathas.
I hope this video inspires you to learn more about East Africans and their long and influential history in the Indian subcontinent (stretching back thousands of years!).

Deccan Sultanates - Post - Bahamani Era || History of Golconda, Bijapur, Bidar, Ahmednagar and Berar
During the 14th century, the northern part of the Deccan plateau was ruled by the Muslim Bahmani Sultanate and the Sultanate of Khandesh while the southern part was ruled by the Hindu Vijayanagar Empire.
It was during the 15th century when the disintegration of the Bahmani Sultanate led to the evolution of five different Sultanates.

The Sultanates of Deccan were five medieval Muslim highly cultured kingdoms with a rich artistic heritage arose at the end of 15th century in the Deccan plateau, central-southern India.
The five sultanates were the ones of Bijapur, Golconda, Ahmednagar, Bidar and Berar.
They originated from the collapse of the Bahmani sultanate, and existed between 1490 when the sultanates of Ahmednagar, Bedar and Bijapur got independent, until 1686 and 1687, when the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb conquered the last two, respectively the ones of Bijapur and Golconda.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, these sultanates became cosmopolitan centers where different ideas, languages, religions, artistic styles and populations, merged.
Under the patronage of the dynasties that ruled these kingdoms, all of foreign origin but with strong cultural and blood ties with the local populations, foreign influences—notably from Iran, Turkey, eastern Africa, and Europe—combined with ancient and prevailing Indian traditions created a distinctive Indo-Islamic art and culture that came to be known as the Deccani.

The #Ahmadnagar Sultanate was a late medieval Indian kingdom, located in the northwestern Deccan, between the sultanates of Gujarat and Bijapur. Malik Ahmad, the #Bahmani governor of Junnar after defeating the Bahmani army led by general Jahangir Khan on 28 May 1490 declared independence and established the Nizam Shahi dynasty rule over the sultanate of Ahmednagar.[5] Initially his capital was in the town of Junnar with its fort, later renamed Shivneri. In 1494, the foundation was laid for the new capital Ahmadnagar. In 1636 #Aurangzeb, then Mugal viceroy of Deccan, finally annexed the sultanate to the Mughal Empire.
