Nightmare vs. Night Terror
Most parents have calmed a child after a bad night’s sleep. But there are times when the experience becomes a bad dream for everyone, especially when it involves a night terror.
“There are few different things about night terrors and nightmares,” says Dr. Drago.
Dr. Denise Drago is a pediatrician with Lee Memorial Health System. She finds night terrors can be just as terrifying for moms and dads.
“Kids will wake up, they’ll sort of scream and shout. They’ll look very scared. And most normal things you would do to calm them down won’t work. They’re not really interacting with you, they’re not understanding what’s going on and it can be more frightening for the parent,” says Dr. Drago.
Knowing the difference between nightmare and night terror will help everyone rest easier. Experts say...

FROM THE VIDEO:
"Ever since I was a little child, I've experienced what's called “night terrors.” I'd often wake up screaming, soaked in sweat, and extremely disoriented. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, only about 6.5% of kids and 2.2% of adults have night terrors – however – for those of us with a mood disorder like Bipolar, it's quite a bit more common."
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN NIGHTMARES AND NIGHT-TERRORS:
(1). A good place to start will be the differences between a nightmare and a night terror. It's like comparing a sneeze to an asthma attack. The first main difference is that nightmares occur during REM sleep – usually later at night or early in the morning when the brain reaches that state. Night ...

What is the difference between Nightmares and Night Terrors?
This video describes the differences between nightmares and night terrors. Nightmares are a type of dream that wakes up the person having the nightmare. They are fairly common and people usually remember the details of a nightmare when awakened by it. Nightmares occur during REM sleep. They are more common in women than in men, and more common in children than adolescents. Night terrors occur during non-REM sleep. They are uncommon and mostly occur in children from 3 to 12 years of age. People who awaken from night terrors usually don’t remember the content. A person with night terrors may yell or scream, move around, and have their eyes open, but won’t be conscious during the night terror and will transition to consciousness slowly as compared to someone waking up from a nightmare.

Experts say there are basic distinctions that separate the two. Each one should be treated accordingly.
“If you have a child who has a night terror, you don’t want to try and interfere with them and talk to them. You want to lead them calmly back to their bed. In contrast to a nightmare, where you really want to have a conversation with them, it’s important to listen to what they had a bad dream about and reassure them,” says Dr. Drago.
It can be tricky. Your child may be crying or inconsolable following a nightmare. Looking at the clock may give you a hand.
“Night terrors tend to happen earlier on in the evening. Nightmares tend to happen later in the evening so more in the early morning hours,” says Dr. Drago.
And as much as it may trouble you, a night terror doesn’t really disturb your little one.
“Nine times out of ten the child won’t remember having the event. So you’re more scared then they are,” says Dr. Drago.
Knowing the best way to respond, should give the whole family a bit of comfort.

The first main difference is that nightmares occur during REM sleep – usually later at night or early in the morning when the brain reaches that state. Night terrors, on the other hand, typically happen earlier – during non-REM sleep.
(2). The second difference is the ability to recall the dream. Someone having a nightmare will wake up with a rather clear memory of the bad dream. Someone having a night terror might not even remember that it happened in the morning. I personally have this tiny window of about a minute when I wake up where can remember pieces of the dream. If my partner asks me what the dream was about, it's just gone. This used to drive me nuts until I realized it was a normal part of night terrors.
(3). The third difference has to do with age demographic... Anyone can have night terrors, but they are way more common in kids between the ages of four to eight. Most of the time they will stop on their own as the child gets older. Nightmares on the other had can affect any age indiscriminately.
(4). The last difference I'll cover has to do with awareness. When I was a kid, I'd wake up from a night terror screaming and not even be aware that my mom was there trying to comfort me. I could have my eyes wide open, but not remember anything about it in the morning. With a nightmare, I'm a lot more aware of what's going on... I might consciously seek out one of my parents to comfort my fears.

Lyrics:
Spiders seeking shelter
Fading with the dawn
Vanishing at sunrise
As morning light shines on
Sacrificial martyr
Victim dressed in white
Headed for the slaughter
Angels cry for her tonight
To the cross
At the stake
To the lions
On the rack I break
I break
Night terror
Hysteria
Nocturnal trial by fire
Eyes open wide but I can’t see
Mind awake
Body at rest
Drifting through sleep transition
Borderland state
Swimming through waves
Sensory dream condition
Without warning
I fall down the bottomless well
Flesh is crawling
Need to claw my way out of this hell
By the sword
On the wheel
Twisting in the wind
Pierce the silence
With a scream
Why can’t I remember anything?
Anything
Night terror
Hysteria
Nocturnal trial by fire
Eyes open wide but I can’t see
I can’t see

-My channel is completely dedicated to helping individuals, families, and friends who struggle with, or know someone living with Bipolar Disorder. My goal is to provide actual tools, tips, and discuss topics that can potentially help “Polar Warriors” grow to live a more balanced, peaceful, and fulfilling life.

Lyrics:
Spiders seeking shelter
Fading with the dawn
Vanishing at sunrise
As morning light shines on
Sacrificial martyr
Victim dressed in white
Headed for the slaughter
Angels cry for her tonight
To the cross
At the stake
To the lions
On the rack I break
I break
Night terror
Hysteria
Nocturnal trial by fire
Eyes open wide but I can’t see
Mind awake
Body at rest
Drifting through sleep transition
Borderland state
Swimming through waves
Sensory dream condition
Without warning
I fall down the bottomless well
Flesh is crawling
Need to claw my way out of this hell
By the sword
On the wheel
Twisting in the wind
Pierce the silence
With a scream
Why can’t I remember anything?
Anything
Night terror
Hysteria
Nocturnal trial by fire
Eyes open wide but I can’t see
I can’t see
