The newton metre is a unit of torque (also called "moment") in the SI system. The symbolic form is Nm or N·m. One newton metre, sometimes hyphenated newton-metre, is equal to the torque resulting from a force of one newton applied perpendicularly to a moment arm which is one metre long.
It is also used less commonly as a unit of work, or energy, in which case it is equivalent to the more common and standard SI unit of energy, the joule. In this very different usage the metre term represents the distance travelled or displacement in the direction of the force, and not the perpendicular distance from a fulcrum as it does when used to express torque. This usage is generally discouraged, since it can lead to confusion as to whether a given quantity expressed in newton metres is a torque or a quantity of energy. However, since torque represents energy transferred or expended per angle of revolution, one newton metre of torque is equivalent to one joule per radian.
Newton metres and joules are "dimensionally equivalent" in the sense that they have the same expression in SI base units:
This video explains the two different situations where the unit of measurement is the newton-meter. The first case is for work and energy. The unit for work is the joule. Work is done when a force (newtons) is applied through a distance (meters). Work is calculated as the force times the distance. One joule of work is done when a force of one newton is applied through a distance of one meter. For work we do not use the units Nm, instead we abbreviate this as the joule (j)
The second case is for torque. Torque is a force that causes an object to turn or rotate. The unit for torque is the newton-meter. Torque is calculated as the force times the lever arm. The lever arm is the distance away from the pivot point that the force is applied. One newton-meter of torque is when a one newton forc...

Which is better, horsepower or torque? Two words that are often stated in the car community, but often misunderstood. This video seeks to clarify the difference between the two, without silly analogies like "horsepower is how fast you hit the wall, torque is how far you take it with you" (which, by the way, is highly inaccurate).
Torque is a force acting at a radius, while horsepower simply incorporates time into the equation. This video will discuss the differences, how each applies to internal combustion engines, how they relate, what peak torque and peak horsepower actually mean, and how to analyze torque and horsepower curves. Finally, what's more important for acceleration, a car with lots of power, or lots of torque?
Let's get technical. With the context of an engine: Power = Torque x Angular Velocity. In imperial units, this translates to Horsepower = Torque x RPM / 5252.

NEW VIDEO EVERY WEDNESDAY!
This video instructs students of the proper use of a spring scale (or Newton meter or force meter), explains the 'strength' of various Newton meters, and most importantly, how to calibrate them because they get out of whack very easily and ruin data.
