The National Movement for Stability and Progress (Bulgarian:Национално движение за стабилност и възход (НДСВ) or Natsionalno dvizhenie za stabilnost i vazhod, NDSV), until 3 June 2007 known as the National Movement Simeon II (the acronym in Bulgarian is the same - НДСВ), is a liberal and populistpolitical party in Bulgaria, created as a personal vehicle of Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (Simeon II), the deposed Tsar of Bulgaria and former Prime Minister.
History
It was founded in April 2001, only 11 weeks ahead of a parliamentary election, after former Tsar Simeon II had announced his intention to become involved in the political life of Bulgaria. He promised to attract foreign investors, reduce taxes and uproot corruption within the first 800 days of his premiership. The movement met with immediate enthusiasm and won 42.7% of the popular vote and 120 out of 240 seats in the 2001 elections. One seat short of an absolute majority, it formed a large coalition with the conservative Union of Democratic Forces, the Bulgarian Socialists, and the ethnic minority party Movement for Rights and Freedoms with Simeon Sakskoburggotski (his official name in Bulgarian since the end of monarchy) becoming Prime Minister. NDSV's popularity descreased markedly when Simeon failed to hold his promises whithin the specified time. However, it was during Simeon's term that Bulgaria entered NATO and prepared the economic and political stability that was prerequisite for the country becoming a member of the European Union in 2007. NDSV party became a full member of the Liberal International at its Sofia Congress in May 2005.
On October 2nd 1996 its members of parliament joined the Social Democratic Party to form a unified parliamentary entity.
In the 1999 parliamentary elections it formed an electoral alliance with the Social Democratic Party and the former communist People's Alliance and the feminist Women's List. In 2000 it formally merged with these other parties to form the Social Democratic Alliance.
The National Movement rose to prominence as a result of the legislative and European elections in 1989, when under the leadership of Pierre Peters. In the European elections, it recorded 2.9% of the vote nationwide.
The last elections that it contested were the legislative and European elections on 12 June 1994. They came at the height of a wave of indiscriminate racist attacks, neo-Nazi demonstrations in Luxembourg, and it was suggested that the National Movement may capitalise by winning a seat in the Chamber of Deputies. However, in domestic and European elections, its share of the vote fell, the party failed to win a seat in either election, and it was promptly disbanded.
Tsar Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha | The Cambridge Union
Simeon II became Tsar of Bulgaria in August 1943 at the age of six. Three years later the Bulgarian Royal family was exiled from the country and the monarchy was abolished. In 2001 he formed a political party, the National Movement Simeon II, which won victory in the general election of that year. During his time as Prime Minister, Bulgaria joined NATO. He is one of the few monarchs in history to have served as both head of state and head of government.

STORYLINE:
Bulgaria's former King, Simeon the Second, has been asked to form the country's next government.
The ex-ruler's political movement swept to victory in general elections last month.
In a brief ceremony on Sunday Bulgaria's President Petar Stoyanov asked Simeon Saxkoburgotsky to form the next cabinet.
Simeon's National Movement party announced last week that it was putting forward the former monarch as the next prime minister.
Plamen Panayotov, a senior party official of Simeon's National Movement, said the new prime minister would present a list of his proposed cabinet members by next Sunday.
Parliament is scheduled to vote on the new cabinet on July 24.
Simeon, who is 64, declined to comment on who'll be included.
His National Movement party holds a hundred and-20 of the two hundred and-40 seats in the legislative chamber.
This is just one seat short of simple majority.
So Simeon is having to conduct coalition talks with the outgoing Prime Minister Ivan Kostov's party and the predominantly ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms.
Simeon has repeatedly pledged to work for the broadest possible coalition of all those parties that share his main priorities.
These are: speeding economic growth and lifting living standards, accession to the European Union and NATO, and fighting corruption and cronyism.
Simeon was crowned king of Bulgaria at the age of six in 1943 after the sudden death of his father, King Boris.
He lost his throne in a 1946 referendum widely believed to have been rigged by the communists, who ruled for more than 50 years.
Simeon first returned to Bulgaria in 1996, then came back permanently just three months ago to form his party.

STORYLINE:
Bulgaria's former king Simeon II claimed victory in parliamentary elections on Sunday.
And the country's Prime Minister Ivan Kostov conceded that his party had suffered "a heavy election defeat".
Preliminary results based on 30 percent of the votes counted, show the former king's party, the National Movement Simeon II, with 46 percent.
Running second was Kostov's governing Union of Democratic Forces with 20 percent.
The result will signal the first return by a monarch to politics in ex-communist Europe.
Final official results are expected on Wednesday, and it won't be known until after seats are assigned whether the National Movement will need a coalition partner to govern.
The electoral commission put voter turn out at 66 percent.
At a news conference Simeon said that he is ready to offer a coalition to any parties that agree with his policies.
He listed these as stable economic growth, speedy admission into the European Union and NATO, and the eradication of corruption.
After five decades in exile in Spain, 64-year-old former king Simeon returned to Bulgaria early this year to cheering crowds.
Simeon set up his own political party after being barred by the courts from running for president - the courts had said he hadn't lived in Bulgaria long enough.
So far Simeon has refused so far to say whether he will take on the role of prime minister and denies he has any desire to restore Bulgaria's monarchy.
Simeon acceded to the throne in 1943, at the age of six, after the death of his father Boris III.
He reigned under regents until 1946, when the communists called a referendum that succeeded in abolishing the monarchy.
The royal family then went into exile, settling eventually in Spain.
Simeon's party received strong support in some of the country's most economically depressed mining areas.
With 70 percent of the population living at or below the official poverty line Simeon's assurances of rapid improvement in the lives of ordinary citizens was welcomed by voters.
Simeon's early childhood had coincided with the turmoil of the Second World War.
The Balkans was like a bone over which Hitler and Stalin fought ruthlessly.
And Simeon's idyllic first years were brought to an abrupt end.
In 1943, his father, King Boris, died in mysterious circumstances.
Some believe that Stalin and others that Hitler, had him killed.
Three years later the nine-year-old monarch was thrown out of his country by the Communists, who failed to secure his abdication.

Description: Bulgaria elected its members of the European Parliament in a by-election on 20 May 2007. It was the country's first European election, having joined the Union on 1 January of that year. The country still had 18 MEPs, no change from before the election. Until Bulgaria could hold these elections, the country was represented by MEPs appointed by the National Assembly. The top two parties – GERB and Bulgarian Socialist Party – won 5 seats each, followed by the Movement for Rights and Freedoms with four, Ataka with three, and National Movement Simeon II with one. Voter turnout was 28.6%. It was considered likely that the result of the election would cause a major political crisis in Bulgaria, due to the expected weak results of the National Movement.Controversially, the eligible voters were limited to citizens of Bulgaria and the EU with their permanent and current address within the Union and a minimum of 60 days of the last three months before the elections spent within its borders. Because of this requirement, 232,800 people were rendered ineligible to vote, 185,000 of whom were Turkish Bulgarians resident in Turkey.

~~~ 2007 European Parliament election in Bulgaria ~~~
Title: What is 2007 European Parliament election in Bulgaria
Created on: 2019-02-08
------
Description: Bulgaria elected its members of the European Parliament in a by-election on 20 May 2007. It was the country's first European election, having joined the Union on 1 January of that year. The country still had 18 MEPs, no change from before the election. Until Bulgaria could hold these elections, the country was represented by MEPs appointed by the National Assembly. The top two parties – GERB and Bulgarian Socialist Party – won 5 seats each, followed by the Movement for Rights and Freedoms with four, Ataka with three, and National Movement Simeon II with one. Voter turnout was 28.6%. It was considered likely that the result of the election would cause a major political crisis in Bulgaria, due to the expected weak results of the National Movement.Controversially, the eligible voters were limited to citizens of Bulgaria and the EU with their permanent and current address within the Union and a minimum of 60 days of the last three months before the elections spent within its borders. Because of this requirement, 232,800 people were rendered ineligible to vote, 185,000 of whom were Turkish Bulgarians resident in Turkey.
The National Movement for Stability and Progress (Bulgarian:Национално движение за стабилност и възход (НДСВ) or Natsionalno dvizhenie za stabilnost i vazhod, NDSV), until 3 June 2007 known as the National Movement Simeon II (the acronym in Bulgarian is the same - НДСВ), is a liberal and populistpolitical party in Bulgaria, created as a personal vehicle of Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (Simeon II), the deposed Tsar of Bulgaria and former Prime Minister.
History
It was founded in April 2001, only 11 weeks ahead of a parliamentary election, after former Tsar Simeon II had announced his intention to become involved in the political life of Bulgaria. He promised to attract foreign investors, reduce taxes and uproot corruption within the first 800 days of his premiership. The movement met with immediate enthusiasm and won 42.7% of the popular vote and 120 out of 240 seats in the 2001 elections. One seat short of an absolute majority, it formed a large coalition with the conservative Union of Democratic Forces, the Bulgarian Socialists, and the ethnic minority party Movement for Rights and Freedoms with Simeon Sakskoburggotski (his official name in Bulgarian since the end of monarchy) becoming Prime Minister. NDSV's popularity descreased markedly when Simeon failed to hold his promises whithin the specified time. However, it was during Simeon's term that Bulgaria entered NATO and prepared the economic and political stability that was prerequisite for the country becoming a member of the European Union in 2007. NDSV party became a full member of the Liberal International at its Sofia Congress in May 2005.
