"Napoleon" is the second single by Peter Wolfe. Unlike "For Lovers" the ratings for "Napoleon" weren't all that positive. Especially Wolfman's singing was in the center of negative criticism and was described as "mo-no-tone ratatat". The single reached number forty-four in the UK Singles Chart.
The film begins in Brienne-le-Château with youthful Napoleon attending military school where he manages a snowball fight like a military campaign, yet he suffers the insults of other boys. It continues a decade later with scenes of the French Revolution and Napoleon's presence at the periphery as a young army lieutenant. He returns to visit his family home in Corsica but politics shift against him and put him in mortal danger. He flees, taking his family to France. Serving as an officer of artillery in the Siege of Toulon, Napoleon's genius for leadership is rewarded with a promotion to brigadier general. Jealous revolutionaries imprison Napoleon but then the political tide turns against the Revolution's own leaders. Napoleon leaves prison, forming plans to invade Italy. He falls in love with the beautiful Joséphine de Beauharnais. The emergency government charges him with the task of protecting the National Assembly. Succeeding in this he is promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the Interior, and he marries Joséphine. He takes control of the army which protects the French–Italian border, and propels it to victory in an invasion of Italy.
Toulon (French pronunciation:[tu.lɔ̃]; ProvençalOccitan: Tolon in classical norm or Touloun in Mistralian norm) is a city in southern France and a large military harbour on the Mediterranean coast, with a major French naval base. Located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azurregion, Toulon is the capital of the Vardepartment.
The Commune of Toulon has a population of 165,514 people (2009), making it the fifteenth-largest city in France. It is the centre of an urban area with 559,421 inhabitants (2008), the ninth largest in France. Toulon is the fourth-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast after Marseille, Nice and Montpellier.
Toulon is an important centre for naval construction, fishing, wine making, and the manufacture of aeronautical equipment, armaments, maps, paper, tobacco, printing, shoes, and electronic equipment.

Famed for its groundbreaking technical innovations – including its famous triptych finale – and a running time of 5 ½ hours, Gance’s epic traverses many of the formative experiences that shaped Napoleon’s rapid advancement. Cool under pressure, Bonaparte overcomes fierce rivals, the deadly Terror and political machinations to seal his imperial destiny. Monumental and visionary, the story’s chapters play out in exhilarating fashion tied together by an incredible feat of editing and technical ingenuity. Featuring an equally mammoth score composed and conducted by Carl Davis (newly recorded in 7.1), this definitive digital restoration presents this silent masterpiece in all its grandiose glory.

The version available to us is a 4-hour cut. More recent restorations add nearly two hours to the running time, but Francis Ford Coppola claims distribution rights and refuses to allow the film to be shown without his father's score.
The last scene of the film is perhaps more innovative than the first. Here, we get a triptych, meant to be shown on three separate screens, standing side-by-side. This is usually accomplished through super-imposition and cross-fades. The effect here is powerful. We can fully feel the grand sweep of history.

Abel Gance’s heroic depiction of the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte is an undisputed cinema landmark.

NAPOLÉON (1927) - DIR. ABEL GANCE
https://www.filmsranked.com/movie/napoleon/
The opening scene is of a snowball fight at the young Napoleon's school Brienne-le-Château. The use of a handheld camera and extremely quick cuts gives Napoléon a dynamism unique in silent films. It feels more akin to Aronofsky than Griffith.
Griffith is brought to mind however, when we see Gance's staged historical re-enactments. Maximillian Robspierre is given some dastardly sunglasses, but Gance stays close to David with the death of Marat.
Gance doesn't waste time with subtly. Napoléon's cinematic innovations don't disguise its operatic style and Wagnerian ambitions. This gigantic epic film - 6 hours long originally - was meant to be only the first of 6 films about Bonaparte's life.
San Francisco Silent Film Festival will present the U.S. premiere of Abel Gance's legendary silent epic "Napoleon" in its complete restoration by Academy Award¨-winning historian, documentarian, and archivist Kevin Brownlow.
After three years discussing the Vatican’s 1995 list of 45 important films, Thomas and James have finally reached the final movie! Made in 1927, it’s a five-and-a-half-hour long, epic, technically dazzling silent film about Napoleon.
