Outer Banks: One Day in Nags Head
The Outer Banks of North Carolina has long been one of our favorite travel destinations. On a recent late summer trip to the OBX (as the area is popularly nicknamed), we spent the final day of a three day visit in the town of Nags Head. This town is a popular attraction for tourists due to not just its beautiful beaches, but also its high concentration of restaurants, shops and attractions. (Pro tip: the town of Nags Head is even the location of the only hospital in the Outer Banks.) We had one day to enjoy the beaches and the town. We share the highlights with you here.
Check out our original Nags Head video filmed several years ago to see a lighthouse, Jennette's Pier, and the tallest sand dunes on the east coast of the United States:

Nags Head, North Carolina's Outer Banks
The Outer Banks (frequently abbreviated OBX) are a 200 mi (320 km) string of barrier islands and spits off the coast of North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, on the east coast of the United States. They line most of the North Carolina coastline, separating Currituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean. A major tourist destination, the Outer Banks are known for their wide expanse of open beachfront and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. This was our first time visiting OBX for Annis and me. We definitely plan to schedule another trip to explore more of this naturally diverse coastal area and all it has to offer. We hope you enjoyed the video!

From Wikipedia:
Nags Head is a town in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. It is a busy vacation spot because of its beaches and sand dunes of Jockey's Ridge. The population was 2,757 at the 2010 census.
Early maps of the area show Nags Head as a promontory of land characterized by high sand dunes visible from miles at sea. The origin of the town's name is obscure but it is likely to have been named after any one of the Nag's Heads on the English coast.
A folkloric explanation claims that mules or horses (nags) would have lights hung on their heads by nefarious wreckers in order to trick ships into running aground and then loot the ships of their valuables. The town's emblem depicts one such equine accomplice from the tale.
Around 1830, Nags Head became known as a resort area. This direction was accelerated in 1855 when Dr. W.G. Pool bought 50 acres of oceanfront land which he separated into plots and sold to friends, increasing the number of homes in the area.
Jockey's Ridge is the last vestige of the sand dunes seen by the first explorers, as the area is now highly developed. The town incorporated in 1961

Famously known by many as "The Graveyard of the Atlantic", the Outer Banks is a strip of barrier islands stretching over 200 miles long. The numerous beaches are the main draw, and thousands flock there to enjoy the sun, go surfing, do stand-up paddling, or race down the dunes on sandboards.
History fans will find hundreds of years of American history to explore. Some of the earliest English settlers created colonies here, and the lost colony of Roanoke has fascinated mystery enthusiasts for years. Aviation historians also need to visit the site of the first heavier-than-air flight and check out The Wright Brothers National Memorial and Museum.
There are plenty of great reasons to visit. So make yourself comfortable and check out the best things to do in The Outer Banks, North Carolina.

The Outer Banks (frequently abbreviated OBX) are a 200 mi (320 km) string of barrier islands and spits off the coast of North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, on the east coast of the United States. They line most of the North Carolina coastline, separating Currituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, and Pamlico Sound from the
Atlantic Ocean.
