N’Djamena was founded as Fort-Lamy by French commander Émile Gentil on May 29, 1900, and named after Amédée-François Lamy, an army officer who had been killed in the Battle of Kousséri a few days earlier. It was a major trading city and became the capital of the region and nation.
During the Second World War, the French relied heavily upon the city's airport to move troops and supplies. On 21 January 1942, a lone GermanHe 111 of the Sonderkommando Blaich successfully bombed the airfield at Fort Lamy, destroying oil supplies and ten aircraft. Fort Lamy received its first bank branch in 1950, when the Bank of West Africa (BAO) opened a branch there.

I Almost Died Today. Twice
The past few days in N'Djamena, Chad have been the worst days of my entire life and I've had a miserable time here. Never in my life have I been more scared, threatened, or attacked (both verbally and physically) than in this hot, dusty, beaten-down deserted city. I was in a disastrous police chase on a motorbike and I also was attacked by a dozen people for taking 1 photo inside a minibus. I apologize for the lack of posting lately - I've had no access to wifi until now and I'm still shaken up by what has happened to me.
If it wasn't for my 6'6'' local friend (AKA Bodyguard), then I'm not sure I'd be alive right now. This is not a joke, this is serious.
The lesson learned has been learned on my end to always ask before taking a photo of anyone, but it was uncalled for these people to at...

Chad: Years of conflict crippling the economy
Nearly a decade of Boko Haram attacks and a rebellion in the north have left Chad’s economy in ruins and business with its biggest regional trading partner, Nigeria, effectively halted.
The discovery of oil in 2003 was hailed by the government as a new dawn, but oil prices crashed in 2020 due to COVID-19.
Trade is not the only thing that has been crippled, most hotels in the capital operate either well below capacity or have shut down.
Economists say any recovery will depend on how fast the country ends the rebellion and achieves political stability.

I will end this post by saying that I do not hate Chad (as a whole) and I realize that unlucky situations can make or break your experience in any country. But it's safe to say that I will not be coming back to Chad anytime soon.

The capital N'Djamena is the largest city, official languages are Arabic and French but Chad is home to over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups. Chad remains plagued by political violence and recurrent attempted coups d'état. Chad is one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in the world; most inhabitants live in poverty as subsistence herders and farmers. Since 2003 crude oil has become the country's primary source of export earnings, superseding the traditional cotton industry. Chad has a poor human rights record, with frequent abuses such as arbitrary imprisonment, extrajudicial killings, and limits on civil liberties by both security forces and armed militias.

Here are top 10 things you probably didn’t know about chad.
1. Chad Is Named After Its Most Popular Lake, Lake Chad.
Lake Chad used to be the seventh largest lake in the world and the fourth largest in Africa. However, due to advanced desertification and low rainfall, it has shrunk to less than 10% of its former size and volume. Lake Chad is however the largest lake in the Chad Basin. The freshwater lake that touches base with Nigeria, Cameroon, and Niger is where the country got its name.
2. Crude Oil Is its Economy’s Engine
The oil rich nation was first known for its cotton which brought significant wealth to the nation before the discovery of oil in 2003.The first oil pipeline runs through Cameroon, connecting the Doba Basin to the port of Kribi producing 94,000barrels of crude oil daily.Chad's energy sector has had years of mismanagement by the parastatal Chad Water and Electric Society, which provides power for 15% of the capital's citizens and covers only 1.5% of the national population. Most Chadians burn biomass fuels such as wood and animal manure for power which is such a pity for a country rich enough to more than provide energy for its citizens. Hopefully, the Inga dam project will spin the energy fate of the country around.
