In music, sampling is the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or a sound recording in a different song or piece.
However, hip hop music was the first popular music genre based on the art of sampling - being born from 1970s DJs who experimented with manipulating vinyl on two turntables and an audio mixer. The use of sampling in popular music spread with the rise of electronic music and disco in the mid-1970s to early 1980s, the development of electronic dance music and industrial music in the 1980s, and the worldwide influence of hip hop since the 1980s on genres ranging from contemporary R&B to indie rock. Sampling is now most often done with a sampler, originally a piece of hardware, but today, more commonly a computer program. However, vinyl emulation software may also be used, and turntablists continue to sample using traditional methods. The inclusion of sampling tools in modern digital production methods increasingly introduced sampling into many genres of popular music, as well as genres predating the invention of sampling, such as classical music, jazz and various forms of traditional music.
Early sampling artists simply used portions of other artists' recordings without permission, but once music incorporating samples began to make significant money, some sampled artists, publishers, and record companies began to take legal action, claiming copyright infringement. Sometimes, after the threat or initiation of a lawsuit, such disputes are settled out of court, often with the sampling artist obtaining a license at considerable cost and making other concessions to appease the aggrieved party; other times, the sampling artist contests the infringement claims, such as by arguing in court that the copyright law does not cover their particular use of the work. The outcome of these court cases, primarily in the United States and the United Kingdom, have shaped common law, defining ways statutory law—which does not directly cover sampling—can be applied to sampling disputes.

The word “sample” has many different meanings, depending on who you talk to. A sample could be a simple cycle of a waveform, the sound of a kick drum, or a full measure of a groove. Samples can also refer to the powerful and controversial method of extracting fully produced sections of songs and repurposing them in new works. In this video, Loudon Stearns unwraps these different definitions and their importance for today’s music producer.

Is Ava Max the Queen of Sampling? 🤔👑 #avamax #shakira #sample
Ava Max just made everybody on the internet angry! Ava Max and Kygo just dropped their new song "Whatever", and people weren't happy... because "Whatever" actually samples Shakira! Today I'm going to break down 3 different Ava Max songs that prominently use samples, first "My Head & My Heart", which samples "Around The World, Million Dollar Baby, which samples "Can't Fight The Moonlight" by LeAnn Rimes (and potentially Barbie Girl), and "Whatever" which samples "Whenever, Wherever" by Shakira!
