Henry Wood
Sir Henry Joseph Wood CH (3 March 1869 – 19 August 1944) was an English conductor best known for his association with London's annual series of promenade concerts, known as the Proms. He conducted them for nearly half a century, introducing hundreds of new works to British audiences. After his death, the concerts were officially renamed in his honour as the "Henry Wood Promenade Concerts", although they continued to be generally referred to as "the Proms".
Born in modest circumstances to parents who encouraged his musical talent, Wood started his career as an organist. During his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, he came under the influence of the voice teacher Manuel Garcia and became his accompanist. After similar work for Richard D'Oyly Carte's opera companies on the works of Arthur Sullivan and others, Wood became the conductor of a small operatic touring company. He was soon engaged by the larger Carl Rosa Opera Company. One notable event in his operatic career was conducting the British premiere of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin in 1892.

Henry Wood (cricketer, born 1853)
Henry "Harry" Wood (14 December 1853 – 30 April 1919) was an English cricketer who briefly played Test cricket for England, and enjoyed a successful career for Kent and Surrey that spanned the years between 1876 and 1900. A right-handed batsman who also bowled part-time right-arm fast, Wood was primarily a wicketkeeper. He was Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1891. Although his batting average across his entire first class career was 16.94, his Test batting average was 68.00 thanks to scores of 59 and 134* in his final two innings. His average is statistically the highest of any England Test player, however a standard qualification of twenty innings played deducts him from the recognised lists.
Player career
Wood was born in December 1853 in Dartford, Kent. He earned early recognition while a pupil at Dartford Grammar School, where his cricketing prowess was first evident. He played cricket as a professional for St Stanislaus College in Tullamore, Ireland in 1877, followed by stints at Catford Bridge and then Dover, Kent. He also made his first class debut for Kent on 8 June 1876, taking two catches and performing three stumpings, and scoring 12 and 13 with the bat. He would play nine matches for Kent in total, scoring 72 runs at 5.14 but taking 12 catches and performing six stumpings. Outside of cricket, he worked at an engineering firm in Greenwich.

Henry Wood (Somerset cricketer)
Henry Wood (7 April 1872 – 1 December 1950) played first-class cricket for Somerset in 1904. He was born and he also died at Bath, Somerset.
Wood played for Somerset in a single first-class match against Gloucestershire at Bath, batting at No 10 and scoring four in the first innings and 12 in the second, both times being not out when the Somerset innings ended. He did not bowl in the match, and nor did he take any catches.

Ellen Wood (author)
Ellen Wood (17 January 1814 – 10 February 1887), was an English novelist, better known as Mrs. Henry Wood. She is perhaps remembered most for her 1861 novel East Lynne, but many of her books became international best-sellers, being widely received in the United States and surpassing Charles Dickens' fame in Australia.
Life
Ellen Price was born in Worcester in 1814. In 1836 she married Henry Wood, who worked in the banking and shipping trade in Dauphiné in the South of France, where they lived for 20 years. On the failure of Wood's business, the family (including four children) returned to England and settled in Upper Norwood near London, where Ellen Wood turned to writing. This supported the family (Henry Wood died in 1866). She wrote over 30 novels, many of which (especially East Lynne) enjoyed remarkable popularity. Among the best known are Danesbury House, Oswald Cray, Mrs. Halliburton's Troubles, The Channings, Lord Oakburn's Daughters and The Shadow of Ashlydyat. In 1867, Wood purchased the English magazine Argosy, which had been founded by Alexander Strahan in 1865. Her writing tone would be described as "conservative and Christian," occasionally expressing religious rhetoric. She wrote much of the magazine herself, but other contributors included Hesba Stretton, Julia Kavanagh, Christina Rossetti, Sarah Doudney and Rosa Nouchette Carey. Wood continued as its editor until her death in 1887, when her son Charles Wood took over.

Henry Wood was a 19th-century New York City minstrel show manager, known for creating Wood's Minstrels. The group performed at Mechanics' Hall (New York City), among other locales.
Wood's brother Fernando Wood was a mayor of New York City and served in the United States House of Representatives. Another brother, Benjamin Wood, also served in Congress and the New York State Senate.

Sir Henry Wood conducts 'The Sailors' Hornpipe' (1939)
Traditionally, one of the items in the second half of the Last Night of the Proms is Sir Henry Wood's arrangement of British Sea Songs, ending with 'Rule Britannia' and including the famous Sailor's Hornpipe. This starts quietly and is supposed to accelerate gradually towards the end: but it's become traditional for the audience to clap and stamp along with it - Wood only allowed this in the last chorus - but in recent times the stamping has started almost at once with the whole thing becoming a race between the audience and the orchestra. This is a pity, and it's interesting to hear how Wood himself conducted it. The recording is of course a studio one, not live: it's a masterly demonstration of orchestral control with the accelerando reaching its climax only in the last bar. The London ...

(Some of these names may not be quite correct owing to the quality of the sound and the speed of delivery.)

Traditionally, one of the items in the second half of the Last Night of the Proms is Sir Henry Wood's arrangement of British Sea Songs, ending with 'Rule Britannia' and including the famous Sailor's Hornpipe. This starts quietly and is supposed to accelerate gradually towards the end: but it's become traditional for the audience to clap and stamp along with it - Wood only allowed this in the last chorus - but in recent times the stamping has started almost at once with the whole thing becoming a race between the audience and the orchestra.
This is a pity, and it's interesting to hear how Wood himself conducted it. The recording is of course a studio one, not live: it's a masterly demonstration of orchestral control with the accelerando reaching its climax only in the last bar.

"One of our greatest conductors, Sir Henry Wood's name is famous throughout the world of music. At the Royal Academy of Music where, thirty years ago he was a student, he regularly takes the orchestral rehearsals." L/S of Sir Henry Wood conducting the orchestra. "But it is as conductor of the fine Queen's Hall Orchestra that he will always be most closely associated." L/S from high angle of Wood conducting, the orchestra behind him. Various shots of him conducting. "With Sir Henry wielding the baton one is sure of a fine interpretation. Every point is brought out by his expressive hands." M/S of the man as he conducts against a black background. "It is only as a conductor that he is known to the world. Yet at his charming home he displays the same personality that has endeared him to all music lovers." Wood for concert on 21 Oct. 1905 to celebrate centenary of Nelson's victory at Trafalgar and which became (and remains) traditional finale to Last Night of London Promenade Concerts, with the audience joining in (singing, clapping, and foot-stamping). In 9 sections: 1, Naval Bugle calls. 2, The anchor's weighed (solo tpt., solo tb.). 3, The saucy Arethusa (solo euphonium). 4, Tom Bowling (Dibdin) (solo vc.). 5, Hornpipe, Jack's the lad (solo vn., solo fl., solo piccolo). 6, Farewell and adieu, ye Spanish ladies (4 tbs.). 7, Home, sweet home (Bishop) (solo cl., solo ob.). 8, See, the conquering hero comes (Handel) (solo hns.). 9, Rule, Britannia! (Arne) (org. and full orch.). For some years the Fantasia was cut, but the practice recently has been to give it in full. Bringing a solo cont. into Rule, Britannia! was Sargent's departure from Wood's score.

Voiceover tells how "millions of radio listeners heard the Albert Hall broadcasts of the massed orchestras and sixteen famous soloists in connection with Sir Henry's Jubilee Fund. By courtesy of Columbia Gramophone Company we are watching the BBC Symphony Orchestra and such notable soloists as Isobele Bailey, Styles Alan, Elsie Suddaby, Eva Turner, Margaret Balfour, Muriel Brunskill, Asta Desmond, Mary Garred, Parry Jones, Hedle Nash, Frank Titterton, Walter Widop, Norman Alan, Robert Eastern, Roy Henderson and Harold Williams. (Some of these names may not be quite correct owing to the quality of the sound and the speed of delivery.)
While the orchestra plays, Ralph Vaughan Williams can be seen seated at the conductors feet, following the score.
The lyrics appear on the screen as the chorus sings: "Here we will sit and let the sounds of music, Creep in our ears". Cutaways of gramophone record being cut during the performance.

Traditionally, one of the items in the second half of the Last Night of the Proms is Sir Henry Wood's arrangement of British Sea Songs, ending with 'Rule Britannia' and including the famous Sailor's Hornpipe. This starts quietly and is supposed to accelerate gradually towards the end: but it's become traditional for the audience to clap and stamp along with it - Wood only allowed this in the last chorus - but in recent times the stamping has started almost at once with the whole thing becoming a race between the audience and the orchestra.
This is a pity, and it's interesting to hear how Wood himself conducted it. The recording is of course a studio one, not live: it's a masterly demonstration of orchestral control with the accelerando reaching its climax only in the last bar.
The London Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Sir Henry Wood: part of Columbia DX 954, recorded in November 1939.

Sir Henry Joseph Wood CH (3 March 1869 – 19 August 1944) was an English conductor best known for his association with London's annual series of promenade concerts, known as the Proms. He conducted them for nearly half a century, introducing hundreds of new works to British audiences. After his death, the concerts were officially renamed in his honour as the "Henry Wood Promenade Concerts", although they continued to be generally referred to as "the Proms".
Born in modest circumstances to parents who encouraged his musical talent, Wood started his career as an organist. During his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, he came under the influence of the voice teacher Manuel Garcia and became his accompanist. After similar work for Richard D'Oyly Carte's opera companies on the works of Arthur Sullivan and others, Wood became the conductor of a small operatic touring company. He was soon engaged by the larger Carl Rosa Opera Company. One notable event in his operatic career was conducting the British premiere of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin in 1892.
