Mount Olympus

Mount Olympus (/oʊˈlɪmpəs, ə-/;Greek: Όλυμπος; also transliterated as Olympos, and on Greek maps, Oros Olympos) is the highest mountain in Greece and the second highest mountain in the Balkans. It is located in the Olympus Range on the border between Thessaly and Macedonia, between the regional units of Pieria and Larissa, about 80 km (50 mi) southwest from Thessaloniki. Mount Olympus has 52 peaks, deep gorges, and exceptional biodiversity. The highest peak Mytikas, meaning "nose", rises to 2,918 metres (9,573 ft). It is one of the highest peaks in Europe in terms of topographic prominence.

Olympus was notable in Greek Mythology as the home of the Twelve Olympians, on the Mytikas peak. Mount Olympus is also noted for its very rich flora with several species. It has been the first National Park of Greece, since 1938, and a World's Biosphere Reserve.

Every year thousands of people visit Olympus to admire its nature, to tour its slopes, and reach its peaks. Organized mountain refuges and various mountaineering and climbing routes are available to visitors, who want to explore its nature. The usual starting point for it is the town of Litochoro, on the eastern foothills of the mountain, 100 km from Thessaloniki, where, in the beginning of every summer, the Olympus Marathon terminates.

Mount Olympus (solitaire)

Mount Olympus is a solitaire card game using two decks of 52 playing cards. It is probably thus named because of the tableau's mountain shape and because if won, all the Kings and Queens are displayed, like the Greek gods and goddesses who were said to reside on Mount Olympus.

First, all aces and deuces, or twos (16 cards in all), are removed from the two decks. Then the remaining 88 cards are shuffled and nine of them are laid out on the tableau in an inverted "V" formation. Although this is part of the theme that gives the game its name, the player can opt to just lay the nine cards in a straight line. These nine cards start each of the nine piles in the tableau.

Building on the 16 foundations is up by suit in intervals of two:

On the aces: 3-5-7-9-J-K

On the deuces: 4-6-8-10-Q

Building on the tableau is down, also by suit in intervals of two (i.e. the 5♠ must be placed on the 7♠). A card can be placed on an applicable card, but spaces are not filled. A sequence of cards (such as 6-8-10♣) can be moved as one unit. Any appropriate card can be placed on the foundations at any time.

Mount Olympus is the tallest and most prominent mountain in the Olympic Mountains of western Washington state. Located on the Olympic Peninsula, it is the central feature of Olympic National Park. Mount Olympus is the highest summit of the Olympic Mountains; however, peaks such as Mount Constance, on the eastern margin of the range, are more visible from the Seattle metropolitan area. With notable local relief, Mount Olympus ascends over 2,100 m (6,900 ft) from the 293 m (961 ft) elevation confluence of the Hoh River with Glacier Creek in only 8.8 km (5.5 mi). Mount Olympus has 2,386 m (7,828 ft) of prominence, ranking 5th in the state of Washington.

Due to heavy winter snowfalls, Mount Olympus supports large glaciers, despite its modest elevation and relatively low latitude. These glaciers include Blue, Hoh, Humes, Jeffers, Hubert, Black Glacier, and White, the longest of which is the Hoh Glacier at 3.06 miles (4.93 km). The largest is Blue with a volume of 0.14 cubic miles (0.57 km³) and area of 2.05 square miles (5.31 km²).

In this video, I’ll take you with me to the summit of Mount Olympus and share everything you need to know before taking it on yourself. #mtolympus #greece #mountaineering Mytikas is the highest peak in Greece, part of the Olympus massif near the Thermaic Gulf of Aegean Sea. The mountain range has over 52 peaks and deep gorges. In ancient mythology, ‘Olympus’ was home to the twelve Olympian gods: Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, and more. Geographically, this range acted as a feature that would unify Greece and the Hellenic Regions; it was a shared place that was recognized as divine by all. It is estimated that 10,000 people climb Mount Olympus each year, most of them reaching only the Skolio summit. Climbing Mount Olympus is a non-technical hike, except for the final section from the Skala summit to the Mytikas peak, which is a YDS class 3 rock scramble. “Scrambling with increased exposure. Handholds are necessary. A rope should be available for learning climbers, or if you just choose to use one that day, but is usually not required. Falls could easily be fatal.” The Hiking Route: Prionia: is the starting point and trailhead of Mt. Olympus national park. Driving from Thessaloniki, it will take around 1.5 hours to reach the parking lot. It’s also possible to take a bus from Thessaloniki to Litochoro, then hire a taxi to drive you 30 minutes to Prionia (30 euros). From the trailhead, it will take around 2-3 hours to reach Refuge A, also known as Spilios Agapitos. Here you can sort out accommodations for the night and buy a whole range of food, snacks, drinks, and more. The path is clearly marked with ‘E4’ tagged along the route up. If planning on visiting during the busy season, it would be wise to pre-arrange a bunk on the Mt. Olympus website, as the refuge can fill up quickly. It costs 18 Euros for the night and they accept cash and a card – sometimes the machine doesn’t work so it’s recommended to bring some extra cash. Refuge A to Skala takes around 2 hours. Skala is the most summited peak in Mt. Olympus. This portion of the climb is relatively simple and safe, but exhausting nonetheless. The to Skala is a great deal of cardio, traversing ridges of the mountain, with long portions of moderate uphill hiking. It is recommended that novice climbers bring hiking poles. These will drastically help remove tension off of the calves and thighs for such extensive uphill hikes. The final push to Mytikas. From Skala, this should take around 30-45 minutes. Until this point the hike is non-technical. For this leg of the summit, climbers should exercise increased caution due to exposure to slipping. This is a scramble, so the use of both hands and feet will be necessary to safely make it to the top. Sections of this climb are quite steep, so it’s also important to bring shoes with some grip. Runners and sneakers should be avoided, especially. Going slow and steady, most reasonably fit hikers should have no problem making it to the top of Mytikas. Mt. Olympus is a great entry level climb. From the beautiful national park, to the refuge experience, and the intimidating final push to Mytikas, Olympus offers an awesome jumping off point for anyone looking to get into mountaineering. In this video, I’ll take you with me to the summit of Mount Olympus and share everything you need to know before taking it on yourself. #mtolympus #greece #mountaineering Mytikas is the highest peak in Greece, part of the Olympus massif near the Thermaic Gulf of Aegean Sea. The mountain range has over 52 peaks and deep gorges. In ancient mythology, ‘Olympus’ was home to the twelve Olympian gods: Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, and more. Geographically, this range acted as a feature that would unify Greece and the Hellenic Regions; it was a shared place that was recognized as divine by all. It is estimated that 10,000 people climb Mount Olympus each year, most of them reaching only the Skolio summit. Climbing Mount Olympus is a non-technical hike, except for the final section from the Skala summit to the Mytikas peak, which is a YDS class 3 rock scramble. “Scrambling with increased exposure. Handholds are necessary. A rope should be available for learning climbers, or if you just choose to use one that day, but is usually not required. Falls could easily be fatal.” The Hiking Route: Prionia: is the starting point and trailhead of Mt. Olympus national park. Driving from Thessaloniki, it will take around 1.5 hours to reach the parking lot. It’s also possible to take a bus from Thessaloniki to Litochoro, then hire a taxi to drive you 30 minutes to Prionia (30 euros). From the trailhead, it will take around 2-3 hours to reach Refuge A, also known as Spilios Agapitos. Here you can sort out accommodations for the night and buy a whole range of food, snacks, drinks, and more. The path is clearly marked with ‘E4’ tagged along the route up. If planning on visiting during the busy season, it would be wise to pre-arrange a bunk on the Mt. Olympus website, as the refuge can fill up quickly. It costs 18 Euros for the night and they accept cash and a card – sometimes the machine doesn’t work so it’s recommended to bring some extra cash. Refuge A to Skala takes around 2 hours. Skala is the most summited peak in Mt. Olympus. This portion of the climb is relatively simple and safe, but exhausting nonetheless. The to Skala is a great deal of cardio, traversing ridges of the mountain, with long portions of moderate uphill hiking. It is recommended that novice climbers bring hiking poles. These will drastically help remove tension off of the calves and thighs for such extensive uphill hikes. The final push to Mytikas. From Skala, this should take around 30-45 minutes. Until this point the hike is non-technical. For this leg of the summit, climbers should exercise increased caution due to exposure to slipping. This is a scramble, so the use of both hands and feet will be necessary to safely make it to the top. Sections of this climb are quite steep, so it’s also important to bring shoes with some grip. Runners and sneakers should be avoided, especially. Going slow and steady, most reasonably fit hikers should have no problem making it to the top of Mytikas. Mt. Olympus is a great entry level climb. From the beautiful national park, to the refuge experience, and the intimidating final push to Mytikas, Olympus offers an awesome jumping off point for anyone looking to get into mountaineering. Mount Olympus

Mount Olympus (/oʊˈlɪmpəs, ə-/;Greek: Όλυμπος; also transliterated as Olympos, and on Greek maps, Oros Olympos) is the highest mountain in Greece and the second highest mountain in the Balkans. It is located in the Olympus Range on the border between Thessaly and Macedonia, between the regional units of Pieria and Larissa, about 80 km (50 mi) southwest from Thessaloniki. Mount Olympus has 52 peaks, deep gorges, and exceptional biodiversity. The highest peak Mytikas, meaning "nose", rises to 2,918 metres (9,573 ft). It is one of the highest peaks in Europe in terms of topographic prominence.

Olympus was notable in Greek Mythology as the home of the Twelve Olympians, on the Mytikas peak. Mount Olympus is also noted for its very rich flora with several species. It has been the first National Park of Greece, since 1938, and a World's Biosphere Reserve.

Every year thousands of people visit Olympus to admire its nature, to tour its slopes, and reach its peaks. Organized mountain refuges and various mountaineering and climbing routes are available to visitors, who want to explore its nature. The usual starting point for it is the town of Litochoro, on the eastern foothills of the mountain, 100 km from Thessaloniki, where, in the beginning of every summer, the Olympus Marathon terminates.
