Montrose is a town with a wealth of architecture, and is a centre for international trade. It is an important commercial port for the oil and gas industry. It is known for its wide thoroughfare and high street, which leads to picturesque closes containing secluded gardens. The town has a view of a tidal lagoon, Montrose Basin, which is considered a nature reserve of international importance. It is the largest inland salt water basin in the UK, and an important habitat for the mute swan. Just outside Montrose is the 18th-century House of Dun, designed by the Scottish architect William Adam and built in 1730 for David Erskine, Lord Dun, 13th Laird of Dun.
Before World War I the Royal Flying Corps established a base at Montrose (later RAF Montrose). On 26 February 1913, it became the first operational military aerodrome to be established in the United Kingdom.
Montrose Air Station has an amazing history to tell, becoming the first operational military air station in Great Britain when it was established in February 1913. There is something for everyone regardless of age. We are not just another aviation museum, we also aim to tell the stories of the brave men and women who served and worked here from 1913 until 1952 when it finally closed.

This collection was first amassed by Jean, Lady Maitland during the mid-20th century, who recognised the value of local history and in collecting the everyday items around us before they disappear into obscurity. She searched the length and breadth of Angus to ensure the survival of the treasures preserved for us today.
From the tools needed to till the land and raise livestock, to the paraphernalia that transformed milk to butter and fleeces to wool, the collection serves as an important reminder of the rich agricultural heritage of Angus. There are also several pieces related to weaving, which was once a hugely important cottage industry in the area.

Join us as we Wander around the beautiful walled garden with the stunning rose bower at the centre, restored by the Trust to the original design laid out by Lady Augusta in the 1840s. Admire sweet-smelling roses, peonies, violas and lupins. The herbaceous borders provide a rich palette of colour throughout the spring and summer months.
We take a stroll along the south terrace, where you will find superb views down to the Montrose Basin and beyond. The stone steps and pillars, yew hedges and parterre were all added by Lady Augusta, but the urns on top of the pillars are modern reproductions. Lining the walls are pears and Scottish varieties of apples, which have been trained as espaliers. The 1723 sundial on the lawn is older than the house, but it was also made for Lord Dun.
Admire the magnificent line of towering wellingtonias along the front of the house. They were planted over 160 years ago and were among the first of their kind to be planted in the UK.

Political blooper: MP's Scottish accent baffles British parliamentarian
Members of the British parliament broke into laughter on October 18 when New-Zealand born Tory MP, Paul Beresford, visibly struggled to understand his Scottish colleague who was speaking with an accent.
Beresford initially apologized to Scottish National Party's (SNP) David Linden before asking him to repeat his question. But after a second attempt he sheepishly suggested Linden speak more slowly.
After two failed attempts in the miscommunication, Deputy Speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, suggested they resolve the matter by letter.

8. Glencoe Valley
Glencoe Valley is located in the Scottish Highlands in western Scotland. The area is known for its impressive mountain scenery, beautiful waterfalls, and trails that climb steep peaks, such as the Pap of Glencoe.
7. Glen Nevis
Located right outside the town Fort William, Glen Nevis is one of the most spectacular and beautiful glens in the Highlands. Above all, it’s home to Britain’s highest mountain: Ben Nevis, which is an impressive day hike.
6. Glenfinnan Viaduct
Only a stone's throw away from Glen Nevis and Fort William, the Glenfinnan Viaduct is a must-visit in Scotland! Made famous in the Harry Potter films, this 21-arched viaduct is set amongst some of Scotland’s finest scenery!

3. Eilean Donan Castle
The Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most photographed castles in the world for a good reason. It’s perfectly situated on a small island with a charming curved bridge connecting it to the mainland.
2. Old Man of Storr (Isle of Skye)
Skye is the second largest island in Scotland and in our opinion, it has the most picturesque views you’ll encounter on your trip. The Old Man of Storr is the most iconic sight on the island and attracts many hikers and tourists alike.
1. Quiraing (Isle of Skye)
Quiraing is located on the Northern end of the Isle of Skye and boasts some of the best natural views in all of Scotland. The jagged landscape was caused by a landslip, which exposed strange rock formations underneath a large cliff.
