RIONE MONTI: L’ANTICA SUBUR(r)A

◈ A brief description of our shooting style 🎬🎥
In this channel we film from the point of view of the observer what surrounds us while we walk or ride a bicycle.
The kind of film we make can be defined as Slow TV, i.e. filming ordinary events (such as a walk) for their entire duration, with original audio and without editing (except for unforeseen circumstances or technical reasons).
We decided to use this mode of shooting because we believe that in this way we can show (in addition to the places) a small slice of reality. This seems more interesting to us than showing the usual glossy films.
◈ How to use our Videos 📃
You can "actively" watch our videos, look at the details, read the names of the streets we pass through, and make comments about the places we visit (we'll be happy to reply).
Alternatively, you can use our videos as a "relaxing backdrop" while doing something else, such as Saturday morning breakfast or a ride on your exercise bike.

In the ancient times, Monti was the most densely populated district of Rome. Where you find the majestic Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore today, was once the slaves and prostitutes cemetery. Since the 19th century, the Via Cavour cuts the district from Termini Station to the Roman Forum. On closer inspection, we see that the goods sold were produced in the back of the building. Besides well-established companies, young people with innovative ideas also establish themselves here.
A successful example is Grezzo Raw Chocolate (grezzo italia.it). Since April 2014, it is the first raw bio vegan gluten-free chocolate shop in Europe. The friendly lady in the shop explained us the products.
A few doors away we find the Aromaticus is specialized in natural flavors, municipal cultivation of agricultural products, sprouts, edible flowers, salts and oils.
On the other side of the road is a fruit and greengrocer's. You find almost everything which you can also buy in a covered market on the narrowest room.
Next to the restaurant La Vacca m'briaca (restaurant drunken cow), which we'll visit later, we find a carpentry business. Every evening the carpenter and his friends discuss the day and the general situation. We are allowed to take a look at the craft business.
Next to a bicycle shop an artist has covered the window with his street art .
Everywhere we recognize the beautiful roof terraces. Monti is not a poor district. The prices of condos are exorbitantly high. For 80 m² of living space, the price is approx € 500.000.-. Thus many high earners live in Monti, or foreigners invest in an object. Who does not find any payable flat, is forced to make way into the marginal areas of Rome.

We liked best the Via Urbana. Right next to our hotel, the Hotel I Dormienti, there were a number of stores.

This article is about the capital and largest city in Italy. For other uses, see Rome (disambiguation) and Roma (disambiguation).
Rome (Italian and Latin: Roma [ˈroːma] (About this soundlisten)) is the capital city and a special comune of Italy (named Comune di Roma Capitale), as well as the capital of the Lazio region. The city has been a major human settlement for almost three millennia. With 2,860,009 residents in 1,285 km2 (496.1 sq mi),[1] it is also the country's most populated comune. It is the third most populous city in the European Union by population within city limits. It is the centre of the Metropolitan City of Rome, which has a population of 4,355,725 residents, thus making it the most populous metropolitan city in Italy.[2] Its metropolitan area is the third-most populous within Italy.[3] Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, within Lazio (Latium), along the shores of the Tiber. Vatican City (the smallest country in the world)[4] is an independent country inside the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city; for this reason Rome has sometimes been defined as the capital of two states.[5][6]
Rome's history spans 28 centuries. While Roman mythology dates the founding of Rome at around 753 BC, the site has been inhabited for much longer, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied cities in Europe.[7] The city's early population originated from a mix of Latins, Etruscans, and Sabines. Eventually, the city successively became the capital of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, and is regarded by many as the first ever Imperial City and metropolis.[8] It was first called The Eternal City (Latin: Urbs Aeterna; Italian: La Città Eterna) by the Roman poet Tibullus in the 1st century BC, and the expression was also taken up by Ovid, Virgil, and Livy.[9][10] Rome is also called "Caput Mundi" (Capital of the World). After the fall of the Empire in the west, which marked the beginning of the Middle Ages, Rome slowly fell under the political control of the Papacy, and in the 8th century it became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1870. Beginning with the Renaissance, almost all popes since Nicholas V (1447–1455) pursued a coherent architectural and urban programme over four hundred years, aimed at making the city the artistic and cultural centre of the world.[11] In this way, Rome became first one of the major centres of the Renaissance,[12] and then the birthplace of both the Baroque style and Neoclassicism. Famous artists, painters, sculptors and architects made Rome the centre of their activity, creating masterpieces throughout the city. In 1871, Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, which, in 1946, became the Italian Republic.
In 2019, Rome was the 11th most visited city in the world with 10.1 million tourists, the third most visited in the European Union, and the most popular tourist destination in Italy.[13] Its historic centre is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.[14] Host city for the 1960 Summer Olympics, Rome is also the seat of several specialised agencies of the United Nations, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The city also hosts the Secretariat of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean[15] (UfM) as well as the headquarters of many international business companies such as Eni, Enel, TIM, Leonardo S.p.A., and national and international banks such as Unicredit and BNL. Rome's EUR business district is the home of many companies involved in the oil industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and financial services. The presence of renowned international brands in the city have made Rome an important centre of fashion and design, and the Cinecittà Studios have been the set of many Academy Award–winning movies.[16]

Pizza (Italian: [ˈpittsa], Neapolitan: [ˈpittsə]) is an Italian dish consisting of a usually round, flattened base of leavened wheat-based dough topped with tomatoes, cheese, and often various other ingredients (such as anchovies, mushrooms, onions, olives, pineapple, meat, etc.), which is then baked at a high temperature, traditionally in a wood-fired oven. A small pizza is sometimes called a pizzetta. A person who makes pizza is known as a pizzaiolo.
In Italy, pizza served in formal settings, such as at a restaurant, is presented unsliced, and is eaten with the use of a knife and fork. In casual settings, however, it is cut into wedges to be eaten while held in the hand.
The term pizza was first recorded in the 10th century in a Latin manuscript from the Southern Italian town of Gaeta in Lazio, on the border with Campania. Modern pizza was invented in Naples, and the dish and its variants have since become popular in many countries. It has become one of the most popular foods in the world and a common fast food item in Europe and North America, available at pizzerias (restaurants specializing in pizza), restaurants offering Mediterranean cuisine, and via pizza delivery. Many companies sell ready-baked frozen pizzas to be reheated in an ordinary home oven.
The Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (lit. True Neapolitan Pizza Association) is a non-profit organization founded in 1984 with headquarters in Naples that aims to promote traditional Neapolitan pizza. In 2009, upon Italy's request, Neapolitan pizza was registered with the European Union as a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed dish, and in 2017 the art of its making was included on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
