Violet Elizabeth Malone (stage name Molly Malone) (December 7, 1888 – February 14, 1952) was an American actress of the silent film era. She appeared in 86 films between 1916 and 1929. Her father, Lewis Malone, was a metallurgist for mining companies. Her mother was Violet St. John, born in Nebraska to immigrant parents from England.
She started her movie career at the relatively late age of 29 but soon caught the eye of comedic actor and director Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle who cast her in a number of his shorts including Back Stage and The Garage plus his feature film The Round-Up. She also appeared in films directed by John Ford and Clarence Badger. Her last film was the Universal-Stern silent comedy short The Newlyweds' Pest in 1929.
"Molly Malone" (also known as "Cockles and Mussels" or "In Dublin's Fair City") is a popular song, set in Dublin, Ireland, which has become the unofficial anthem of Dublin City.
The Molly Malone statue in Grafton Street was unveiled by then Lord Mayor of Dublin, Alderman Ben Briscoe during the 1988 Dublin Millennium celebrations, declaring 13 June as Molly Malone Day. The statue was presented to the city by Jury's Hotel Group to mark the Millennium.
Since 18 July 2014, it has been relocated to Suffolk Street, in front of the Tourist Information Office, in order to make way for Luas track-laying work to be completed at the old location. Due to the increase in touristy foot traffic, and their penchant for being "handsy", the statue's cleavage has been groped repeatedly recently. Enough so that it's bronze hue has begun to wear off on the bosom.
History
The song tells the fictional tale of a fishmonger who plied her trade on the streets of Dublin, but who died young, of a fever. In the late 20th century a legend grew up that there was a historical Molly, who lived in the 17th century. She is typically represented as a hawker by day and part-time prostitute by night. In contrast she has also been portrayed as one of the few chaste female street-hawkers of her day. However, there is no evidence that the song is based on a real woman, of the 17th century or at any other time. The name "Molly" originated as a familiar version of the names Mary and Margaret. While many such "Molly" Malones were born in Dublin over the centuries, no evidence connects any of them to the events in the song. Nevertheless, in 1988 the Dublin Millennium Commission endorsed claims about a Mary Malone who died on 13 June 1699, and proclaimed 13 June to be "Molly Malone day".
Molly Malone – Balade irlandaise is an album by French singer-songwriterRenaud, released on 23 November 2009 on EMI Records. It is a collection of traditional-style Irish folk songs translated into French, an idea that had been maturing in Renaud's mind for almost two decades. Renaud had previously used Irish influences in his 1991 album Marchand de cailloux and did a low-key tour playing in Irish pubs in 1997.
Despite mixed reviews in the press, Molly Malone – Balade irlandaise entered the French charts at number one in November 2009. It also reached the top 5 on the albums chart in the French-speaking part of Belgium.
The album title "Molly Malone" is assumed to be partly chosen as a reference to Renaud's son Malone. The second half of the title, "Balade irlandaise", is a play on words between "balade" (a stroll) and "ballade" (a ballad).

Molly Malone (Cockles & Mussels) with lyrics
In Dublin's fair city,
Where the Girls are so pretty,
I first set my eyes,
On sweet Molly Malone,
As she wheeled her wheel barrow,
Through the streets broad and narrow,
Crying cockles and mussels,
Alive alive o!
Alive alive o!
Alive alive o!
Crying cockles and mussels,
Alive alive o!
She was a fish monger,
And sure it was no wonder,
For so were her
Father and Mother before,
And they both wheeled their barrow,
Through the streets broad and narrow,
Crying cockles and mussels,
Alive alive o!
Alive alive o!
Alive alive o!
Crying cockles and mussels,
Alive alive o!
She died of a fever,
And no one could save her,
And that was the end
Of sweet Molly Malone,
But her ghost wheels her barrow,
Through the streets broad and narrow,
Crying cockles and mussels,
