ABC "The Mod Squad" Promo, 1969
Leaving the 80's stuff for a bit, this promo for ABC's The Mod Squad aired in December of 1969. I only found a black-and-white version of this on YT in a block of other ads, so here it is in color by itself. My favorite part:
Pete: "The Indian maid locked me in a closet."
Julie: "At least you had a maid..."
Linc: "At least you had a closet!"
I also like when Julie has to grab Pete and exclaim "Look out!" just as he's about to run over a woman standing directly in front of their vehicle on an otherwise empty road in broad daylight. Is Pete stoned or what?

Classic TV Theme: Mod Squad
I still remember the promos: 'One black, one white, one blonde.' This show, one of the first to tackle a number of then-current social issues, was a new perspective on police procedurals. '21 Jump Street' owes a lot to this show's concept of using troubled youths as undercover cops. It ran for five seasons, garnering critical plaudits and a few awards along the way.
After the show ended Michael Cole had a decent but not spectacular career in films and tv. His autobiography was called 'I Played the White Guy'. Peggy Lipton, who character was described as 'a canary with a broken wing', married Quincy Jones and took a hiatus from acting to concentrate on raising her children and music. In later years she would have a key role in both 'Twin Peaks' and its revival series. Clarence Williams III...

The executive producers of the series were Aaron Spelling and Danny Thomas.
Mod Squad// Complete Collection, all 5 seasons, 124 episodes: https://amzn.to/328HXhT
The counterculture police series earned six Emmy Award nominations, four Golden Globe nominations plus one win for Peggy Lipton, one Directors Guild of America Award, and four Logies. In 1970, the second season episode, "In This Corner . . . Sol Alpert," script by Rita Lakin and Harve Bennet, was nominated by the Mystery Writers of America for an Edgar Award in the category of Best Mystery Teleplay, losing to the TV-Movie Daughter of the Mind. In 1997, a 1970 episode "Mother of Sorrow" was ranked #95 on TV Guide's 100 Greatest Episodes of All Time.
They were The Mod Squad ("One black, one white, one blonde"), described by one critic as "the hippest and first young undercover cops on TV". Each of these characters represented mainstream culture's principal fears regarding youth in the era: long-haired rebel Pete Cochran was evicted from his wealthy parents' Beverly Hills home, then arrested and put on probation after he stole a car; Lincoln Hayes, who came from a family of 13 children, was arrested in the Watts riots, one of the longest and most violent actual riots in Los Angeles history; flower child Julie Barnes, the "canary with a broken wing," was arrested for vagrancy after running away from her prostitute mother's San Francisco home; and Captain Adam Greer was a tough but sympathetic mentor and father figure who convinced them to form the squad.
More than a year before the release of the film Easy Rider, The Mod Squad was one of the earliest attempts to deal with the counterculture. Groundbreaking in the realm of socially relevant drama, it dealt with issues such as abortion, domestic violence, child abuse, illiteracy, slumlords, the anti-war movement, illegal immigration, police brutality, student protest, soldiers returning from Vietnam and PTSD, racism, euthanasia, and the illegal drug trade. Spelling intended the show to be about the characters' relationships and promised that the Squad "would never arrest kids...or carry a gun or use one."

Clarence Williams III continued his acting career in films and tv (he also had a role in 'Twin Peaks'). Eventually he would be cast as the bookstore employee with a mysterious top-secret past in the 'Mystery Woman' movie series with Kellie Martin. In one of them he was reunited with Michael Cole.
As Danny Thomas was one of Mod Squad's producers, it's no surprise that Earle Hagen provided the theme. The show's opening changed little over five seasons, but there were at least two different versions of the three officers running away from...something. How many differences can you spot? Both opens included along with the end credits.
