The King's Singers are a Britisha cappellavocal ensemble founded in 1968. They are named after King's College in Cambridge, England, where the group was formed by six choral scholars. In the United Kingdom, their popularity peaked in the 1970s and early 1980s. Thereafter they began to reach a wider international audience, appearing frequently on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the U.S. In 1987, they were prominently featured as guests on the Emmy Award winning ABC-TV special Julie Andrews: The Sound of Christmas.
Today the ensemble travels worldwide for its performances, appearing in around 125 concerts each year, mostly in Europe, the U.S. and the Far East, having recently added the People's Republic of China to their list of touring territories. In recent years the group have had several UK appearances at the Royal Albert Hall Proms and concerts as part of the Three Choirs Festival and the City of London Festival.
History
The group has always consisted of six singers in total, with their membership changing over the years. None of the original members remain. The first stable incarnation of the group, from late 1969 until 1978, comprised:
Mille Regretz is a French chanson which in its 4 part setting is usually credited to Josquin des Prez. Josquin's version is in the Phrygian mode. Its plangent simplicity made it a popular basis for reworkings (such as the mass setting by Cristóbal de Morales, and the 6vv (SATTBB) setting by Nicolas Gombert), the variations for vihuela known as "La Canción del Emperador" by Luis de Narváez, as well as more recent sets of variations and threnody. Translations of the song differ in their interpretation of the words 'fache/face amoureuse' in line 2. (variously 'amorous anger' or 'loving face'.)
J’ai si grand deuil et peine douloureuse qu’on me verra vite mourir.
English Translation:
A thousand regrets at deserting you
and leaving behind your loving face,
I feel so much sadness and such painful distress,
that it seems to me my days will soon dwindle away.

This anthem - originally written by Harry Dixon Loes as a Christian children's song - became a musical symbol of the civil rights movement in the 1960s and 70s. It's a song that brought people together at that time of challenge and strife, united by its central message of confidence and peace. The arrangement was made by Stacey V. At this time of year we are usually gearing up for the start of a new live season but at the moment we aren't able to enjoy spending as much time with each other as usual. However, a few weeks ago we did manage to get together and record a few pieces for you.
Our first piece is the four-part chanson Mille regretz by Josquin des Prez. The sombre atmosphere this piece creates seems fitting for this difficult time and the poignant text serves as a note to bid adieu to times past.

Here is the second single from our EP, 'The Library, Vol. 4. It's an arrangement that's been in the library for a few decades now, and it's a total gem. The song is iconic, the harmony is delicious, and our instrumental collaborators are wonderful. The film comes from A Fly on the Wall productions.

This hymn - titled 'Eventide' - is a beautiful, simple, four part masterpiece, by the composer William Monk and poet Henry Lyte. We hope you enjoy singing or following along!

Gibbs for our 'Finding Harmony' album which we released in 2020.

Doron Schleifer

Why do I do, just as you say Why must I just, give you your way Why do I sigh, why don't I try to forget It must have been, That something lovers call fate Kept me saying: "I have to wait" I saw them all, Just couldn't fall 'til we met It had to be you, it had to be you I wandered around, and finally found The somebody who Could make me be true, And could make me be blue And even be glad, just to be sad Thinking of you Some others I've seen, Might never be mean Might never be cross, Or try to be boss But they wouldn't do For nobody else, gave me a thrill With all your faults, I Love you still It had to be you, wonderful you It had to be you
